David Gordon Green , James Franco and Danny McBride are following their stoner action movie Pineapple Express with a stoner medieval comedy called Your Highness, and Zooey Deschanel has just joined the cast. Shooting starts this month in Northern Ireland, according to THR, with Natalie Portman also in the picture.

Ben Best wrote the script, which features “an arrogant, lazy prince (McBride) who must complete a quest to save his father’s kingdom.” His heroic brother (Franco), or his relatively more heroic brother anyway, joins him, and Deschanel will play his bride. Portman is a warrior princess who is love interest for McBride. Yeah, I love that idea, too.

This isn’t the first collaboration between Deschanel, McBride and Green. One of Zooey Deschanel’s first big roles (after a string of supporting work) was in David Gordon Green’s 2003 All the Real Girls. That film was also Danny McBride’s first feature credit, but he and the director go much farther back than that. They were neighbors during their first year of film school, and McBride did second unit directing on Green’s excellent feature debut George Washington. And Ben Best, who wrote Your Highness, is part of that family, too. He co-created Eastbound and Down and co-wrote The Foot Fist Way, where he also played Chuck ‘The Truck’ Wallace. So this is a picture made by a big family…or a big family picture about a lazy stoner prince.

McBride has compared the movie to ’80s schlock like The Beastmaster and Krull (he actually said ‘Barry Lyndon meets Krull‘ at one point, which gives me a big grin) and it’s been said that it has dragons, wizards, all the good stuff. McBride’s character’s weapon of choice is the Hoop of Doom, basically a metal hula hoop. The idea is to make an R-rated picture that has some of the same vibe and effects as those ’80s fantasy mini-epics.

Hope it doesn't turn into Year One. Sounds really good so far. And inclusion of Zooey is a major plus!

"Portman is a warrior princess" - that's all I needed to know to get excited about this movie. Everything else is just gravy.

I am hoping Danny McBride throws in a little "Knight life" homage to "thug life." I still get the weirdest looks when I say that for no particular reason.

Is it just me, or is Danny McBride about as funny as having your testicles dug out with a spoon?
  • Splash12
It's just you. McBride is a riot! You see "Tropic Thunder"?
  • skippy
I agree kingcarlos. he's not funny.
  • KINGGS
Only if having your testicles dug out with a spoon is something very humorous in your culture.
  • Just you. He's hilarious.
  • McBride is batting a thousand right now as far as I am concerned (still haven't seen Land of the Lost). Was actually watching him in Hot Rod earlier on HBO. Awesome comedy.
  • Tyler
Nope, just you. McBride rocks, don't get too asshurt over his success.

Guess I'm just tired of asshole characters acting like assholes. I just don't know where the funny comes from in those situations.

It boggles the mind to think of how Ferrell, McBride and the whole Jody Hill "phenomenon" will be looked upon in 100 years time.

    People still like WC Fields.
  • KingCarlos
    Riiiiggghhhttt.... That's the same.

Even a rudimentary knowledge of W.C. Fields' work indicates that he doesn't make a habit of playing egotistical, foul-mouthed thickos. Hint: When 75% of what pleases your audience is your "funny hair", it's time to give up comedy.

BayFormers 2 makes $x billion and Danny McBride: Cinematic Legend? The intellectual decline of society continues...

    Just you, thankfully.

I'm trying not to read too much about this. It only makes the wait more painful.

Thank you, anyway. (maybe Green's next picture WILL be Lyndon/Krull. Or maybe Lyndon/Star Wars. The guy surprises the heck out of me with his genre expeditions)
