Ryan Reynolds is The Green Lantern

reynoldslantern

Yesterday it was reported that Justin Timberlake was in contention to play The Green Lantern. JT had shot a screen test for the film, as had the other three contenders Bradley Cooper, Jared Leto, and Ryan Reynolds. But at the end of the day on Friday, Reynolds was chosen over the other finalists to play the role of Hal Jordan aka The Green Lantern.

The Hollywood Reporter adds that the deal isn’t yet finalized, but Reynolds in the final choice (they just need to agree on money and specifics). The studio “had holding options on the three actors, but, except for Reynolds, those expired Monday. Reynolds’ option would have expired end of day Friday.” Producer Donald De Line, director Martin  Campbell and the studio each had different favorites which made it difficult to agree on any one choice.

The film’s budget isn’t finalized but Warner Bros is hoping to begin shooting in January, hoping to have the films in theaters for the previously announced June 17th 2011 release date. Last we heard, Warners was planning to shoot the film at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney (to take advantage of tax rebates), with a budget of around $150 million.

Casino Royale director Martin Campbell is set to helm the project based on a screenplay by Greg Berlanti (Everwood, Eli Stone), Marc Guggenheim (Law & Order, Eli Stone) and Michael Green (Smallville, Heroes). The Green Lantern character was created by writer Bill Finger and artist Martin Nodell in All-American Comics #16, published in July 1940. The Green Lantern possesses a power ring that gives him control over the physical world as long as the wielder has sufficient willpower and strength to wield it.

What do you think of the choice of Ryan Reynolds? He certainly looks the part and has the right physique for the role. He’s very likable and charismatic actor who has been stuck in a bunch of bad films, but I definitely like the choice — especially over Justin Timberlake. But I’m wondering how this may effect Marvel/Fox’s preliminary plans to have him play Deadpool in a stand-alone film.

    Oh thank Jeebus!
  • Taft207
I can cope with Ryan Reynolds a helluva lot more that justin timberlake
  • Save Green Lantern
Yes I agree, I would have preferred Bradly Cooper. But Anything is better than Justin "I Suck" Timberlake

Can you imagine the hordes of horny teenagers running to.. the Green Lantern premiere..? Aghh..
  • Not that fagg0t again! Mr. Timberlake would have rocked the movie so hard that all the other fagg0ts in the set would turn straight! Start a petition to remove his ass off this film!
  • Octoberist
    awesome!

Deadpool is a great character, but under Fox, it will never reach its potential as a great franchise.

    GO FOR GREEN.

I see you're excited about it (I saw it in the Hype at least, haha)
  • Craigasorusrex
Yeah this pick seems completely uninspired and I'm not really thrilled about it at all.

Expect for Reynolds to play Reynolds. Hal Jordan won't be present in the film.

With that said at least he resembles Hal and has the body to go along with it. Even if he wasn't my preferred actor it could have been far far worse (Leto).

Reynolds is huge (physically) just like Hal and his subdued comedy style shown in XO:W (even if it was for 5 minutes) shows potential for him to expand on it, if the final script is good and Campbell directs him properly.
  • goobafats
Wow. Great choice. They needed to go with Reynolds because as Iron Man proved, a charasmatic and charmingly sarcastic lead can make a lesser known superhero film really fly.

"Expect for Reynolds to play Reynolds. Hal Jordan won't be present in the film."

man, that is an excellent point. and this is why i was excited for hi to be deadpool, because it would have fit perfectly. but once i read your post i was stopped in my tracks. dammit that will be disappointing.

also, do you think GL will be a drama in the way the batman films are? is that going to be DC's thing, whereas marvel is the more comicy filmmaker?
  • How would've Leto been worse? Didn't you want to see the GL/Batman chemistry? It would've been HILARIOUS.

  • ...awh, hell. Need to get a better net connection.
Sorry 'bout this, bros. Delete these or something.
  • dr_acula
I wanted the black Green Lantern.
  • jason B
first off, his name is john stewart. so do you want john stewart, or do you just want a black superhero? either way seems uninspired, because not only hal is the not only the most beloved lantern - he is far and away THE BEST.

hal vs sinestro could be so epically dramatic, that i can't even wrao my brain around a direction to take. so to your desire to want a black lantern (JS) no, just no.
  • dr_acula
Well excuse me for wanting a little variety in my superhero movies.
First off, I know his name is John Stewart; I'm completely ignorant with the comic lore of the Green Lantern but I do posses general comic knowledge.
Anyways... I don't care who's the better version, I just like my Green Lantern black and have entertained the idea since I heard Common would take the role in George Miller's failed Justice League attempt.
  • I think that would have been an excellent spin on it. It's about damn time, anyway.
  • Yeah, I was looking forward to seeing Common as John Stewart. Give me a black leading man who isn't Will Smith, now and then, ya know?
  • Abin Sur
Considering hwo they are multiple Earth GLs, I don't see why the rest of them can't be in the movie. They all bring something different in personality (GL Rebirth is evidence alone of this). Honestly, this movie will not be complete without Stewart, Gardner, and even Kyle. So, I see no reason to not have other GLs in this movie. Without them, you get cardboard Hal pre-Geoff Johns, which sucked horribly.
  • Solid
Ryon Renolds IS the black lantern.
  • jakept
I really wasn't that interested in this project, having never really heard of the Green Lantern before, apart from the name. However now that we have Martin Campbell directing (his Bond movies are the best by far) and Ryan Reynolds starring, my interest is going up big time. This could be great, it's got great director and a great star, the only remaining issue is the screenplay, and I don't know these writers well enough to know what to expect.
  • Hal Jordan doesn't really make wisecracks like Dead Pool, so this seems a bit strange.
  • sideshowRaheem
To be fair in the comics Iron Man doesn't really make wisecracks the way Robert Downey Jr does in the movie and Tobey Maguire isn't nearly as wisecracky as Spiderman is in the comics but they both work well in those roles.
  • i totally agree with half of that statement. spiderman has needed a re-cast since day 1 however
  • Lenny
All Spiderman does is wisecrack??! What comics are you reading...
  • i'm so glad it wasn't Timberlake, I wish though it was Nathan Fillion. When I think of Hal Jordan i think of a southern raised guy who had dream of the stars, speed, and flying. Nathan also is slightly older and peppered much like Hal was. But I guess it was a choice of going with a younger actor.
  • dagreenman18
Im fine with this, my real problem is the writing staff they chose.
  • kiwis
supposedly it's a really good script though(going off some reviews that came out). all three are tv guys, but 2 write lots of comics, 1 being pretty well respected.
  • hey!
a superhero movie i'll be able to get my girlfriend to go to!
the women folk like their reynolds.
  • Snorthog
    Where was this confirmed?
  • Craigasorusrex
Variety an extremely reliable film trade website.
  • Snorthog
Oh, thanks. The only film site I ever check is this one.
  • [A]
    but this is WeLoveBay!
  • Danisgod6491
Oh thank you god, they got someone that reads comics to play the role. I'm happy with this but i guess we'll have to wait longer for a deadpool film but i can wait.
  • jason B
this is amazingly good news for GL fans...but wtf about deadpool & all that shit he was talking just a week ago?!
  • jason B
wait, i just read someone's comment about reynolds being reynold and NOT hal jordan...that is an excellent point and while it would have fit perfectly for the pool', there is much more to hal jordan.
  • spinster
i think this is a very good selecdtion except that i think once you play the role of another superhero you should stick to that superhero(he played Wade Wilson in case you didn't know).
  • LuMendz
Reynolds is just slightly better than JT, but I fear that the movie will be too comedic than intended, but I'll hold my judgment until I see some footage first.
  • ok, the reynolds news is ok, but campbell to direct, thats awesome. i cant wait for this.
  • Loso
pretty cool. im a big fan of reynolds so i think he'll be great for the part. rather see he do a good deadpool movie since xo:w sucked. but i still think bradley cooper would have pulled green lantern off, it would have been his big stand alone role to really bring him out in ppls eye.
  • Danisgod6491
Maybe bradley cooper will be Guy Gardner
  • Larry Rocha
He can pull both off I believe, Just needs to man up to be Hal and manic out to be Deadpool. Especially if he goes all leatherface all the time...
  • Name
Just why isn't he the FLASH?
  • with the Ryan Reynolds smart ass behavior in all his movies the Flash would fit better
  • Deadpool, The Merc with the Mouth, or the Green Lantern, then man whose weakness is the color yellow, so that even if he were scary enough to make his enemies wet themselves, once they did, the yellow puddles would save them.

That's right, Green Lantern, the only hero you can defeat by wetting yourself.

    I hate DC...
  • Danisgod6491
He doesn't have that weakness anymore.
  • Octoberist
    He doesn't have that weakness.

PLUS, I like both DC and Marvel, so there! (raspberry!)
  • joeix
Wow! This is horrible news. It should have been Cooper, yet another 21st century disaster!
  • Octoberist
    so dramatic.
