Pegg and Frost Video Blog Real Details of Paul

what_is_paul

We’ve told you what the movie Paul is about. That’s the road trip movie written by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, currently being directed by Adventureland’s Greg Mottola and starring a whole bunch of awesome people. But it’s much more fun to let Pegg and Frost tell you what it’s about, especially with the slightly smarmy haircut and goatee Pegg is now sporting. Their latest video blog from the production diary What is Paul? goes into all the dirty details, or at least some of them. Watch it after the break.

Here you’ll see most of the major cast (except Sigourney Weaver and Blythe Danner) in character. Jason Bateman, Jo Lo Truglio and Bill Hader in their government suits, Jane Lynch in real Flo coffee shop mode (almost makes me want to watch some Alice reruns), Kristen Wiig, Dave Koechner (Champ Kind!) and the wonderful John Caroll Lynch, who I somehow hadn’t realized was in this one. Finally, Seth Rogen is seen in his mocap suit. Someone give the guy a sandwich; he’s losing weight like he wants to be Peter Jackson. And, according to Pegg, director Greg Mottola is “really finding his inner Spielberg” as he directs the movie, and that’s got to be good.

What we don’t see is any hint of the actual look of Paul, the titular alien that really kicks the story into gear. Because the story actually has Pegg and Frost’s characters traveling from Comic Con, this year’s even should be the ideal place to introduce the alien Paul. But we haven’t heard yet that such a thing is happening, and with the shoot still going on, it’s possible that there won’t be time to prep enough to make that happen. But this pair does love their Comic Con, so we’ll hold out for at least a brief tease of the alien in a couple weeks.

  • PAUL is one hell of a fun, geek-tastic screenplay. I loved it. Depending on how closely it's followed, this could be a film that all audiences will love and geeks can hold close to their heart with their head high. With the caliber of folks involved, I have full confidence in this being a damn good time.
