Mel Gibson To Star In The Beaver?

beaver casting gibson

Remember The Beaver? First-time writer Kyle Killen’s spec screenplay created all sorts of buzz around Hollywood, ended up on the 2008 Black List (a list of the hottest unproduced screenplays of the year), and gained the interest of Steve Carell and director Jay Roach. /Film’s own Brendon Connelly called the screenplay “one of the few very best screenplays” he has “ever read.”

But after Steve moved on to Date Night and Roach moved on to Dinner for Schmucks, the producers moved on to Jim Carrey, who signed on the condition that they find a suitable director. Not sure what happened since, but Jodie Foster (who directed Little Man Tate and Home of the Holidays), who was one of the contenders at the time, has officially come on board the project. Carrey is gone. In his place… Mel Gibson?

That’s right. Gibson has signed on to star in the film after Foster apparently brought him the project. The two co-starred together in the 1994 film Maverick.

Gibson will play Walter, a troubled father, husband and CEO of a stalling toy company, who finds a glove puppet named The Beaver, which he begins to wear without pause, and adopts as a kind of avatar through which he carries out all of his communication. Apparently most of the dialogue in the story comes through the Beaver, and be delivered in what Killen describes as a “crisp English accent”. I can’t really imagine Mel Gibson pulling off this role.  Foster will be doing dual duties, starring in the film as Walter’s wife.

The producers are pushing for a September start on location in New York City, but financing for the $18-19 million film has yet to be finalized.

Mel Gibson as a crazy person, doesn't seem too far fetched

    What?!?! Er...

    Um...

I'm not sure if this is a good idea. I hope Jodie knows what she is doing...

    Heh, cool header image!

No I heard they're both in the sequel to bogey nights PTA is doing in order to drum up money for a sequel of Ophüls' Madame De.

It actually fits pretty well. I didn't think the script was the greatest I'd ever read, but it was pretty alright.
  • it might be alright...he was sorta funny in What Women Want
  • The_Kid
Actually if you look back at some of his roles, Mel Gibson has pulled off funny. A lot of his characters are very quirky which could be good for this role.
  • I read The Beaver and honestly, I wasn't impressed. It couldn't decide if it was a drama or a comedy and really didn't work for me as either. I guess with the right star and director it might work, but I'm not sure this is the duo for the job.
  • The_Kid
There are movies out there that are both comedies and drama at the same time. In fact it is it's genre with the horrible made up word of dramedy.
  • I know, I enjoy dramedies, I just didn't feel this fit into any of those categories. It wasn't funny enough to be considered either a comedy or Dramedy, but it didn't feel like they wanted a straight up drama either.
It just kind of felt like it didn't succeed on any of those levels to me.
But what do I know I only watch movies, I don't make 'em.
  • Damn, this is disappointing. I hate to be that guy, but I have a hard time forgetting the bilious hate that spews from Gibson's mouth. I thought this could have been a funny vehicle for Carell or Carey, but I guess I'm going to be sitting this one out.
  • RiggerPlease
I gotta say, Gibson is crazy enough to pull this off. Between Martin Riggs, his performance in the otherwise forgettable Conspiracy Theory, and well, events of recent years . . . I don't think it's much of a stretch to imagine Gibson talking to and through a handpuppet in his real life, let alone a movie.
  • This is a terrible idea. I agree, that 'BEAVER' is one of the top 20 screen-plays I've ever read, and Mel Gibson just sounds awful for the role.

i'd bet a lot of money this becomes the comeback role for gibson. i think foster knows exactly what she's doing.
  • _spinster_
Why can't he do Lethal Weapon 5, i just watched all of those movies the other day.
  • I don't see it working. I hope that Foster and Gibson would prove me wrong. I wonder what Kyle thinks about this news.
  • Anyone know where I can read this script online?
  • Dude
How can I read this script? How does anybody read these unproduced scripts??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
