Update: Nope, it’s not a massive rumor. THR just ran the news that Justin Timberlake, Bradley Cooper and Ryan Reynolds have all been circling Green Lantern. The three had been in a ‘holding deal’ which expired this past Monday, but different producers on the film all had different favorites, and a consensus still hasn’t been reached. But with the announcement that they’ve come this far, we should hear a decision within the next few days. And if it is Reynolds, what does that do to Deadpool?

Original story follows:

AICN is posting a big but interesting rumor based on an email tip: supposedly Justin Timberlake is screen testing to appear as Hal Jordan in the Green Lantern movie for Warner Bros., and that he’s one of the actors in serious consideration for the role. This is wildly unsubstantiated stuff and therefore not to be taken too seriously. But it’s worth posting because, the more I think about it, I kinda like the idea. For my money, it’s perhaps a better idea than previous rumors like Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling. So before you dismiss outright, even if this really is total bullshit, check out some thoughts after the jump.

Sure, it’s easy to dismiss the idea of JT rocking the green ring, but when I think about him in Southland Tales and Black Snake Moan I realize there’s real potential there. And it would be a massive PR boost for a film based on a character that the general public doesn’t know or care about. Instead of selling Green Lantern from the ground up WB would just have to convince people that Timberlake can play serious action, which wouldn’t be so difficult to do.

Question is, then, assuming he’s good enough for the job, is would the PR baggage that JT brings to the table be too overwhelming? Would the studio really have more of an uphill fight than I’m assuming? I think that based on his SNL appearances and other more recent work that the mainstream wouldn’t take a lot of convincing.

Right now, Green Lantern is supposedly set to go before cameras in Australia starting in or around September, with Martin Campbell directing. Once scheduled for December of 2010, the film is now slated for June 17, 2011. We don’t know any casting at this point, and only the thinnest story details. Perhaps Comic Con will bring more news.

he is good when ever he is on SNL dudes talented but I don't see him as Green Lantern.
  • Gelman
I'd support it only if they got Britney Spears to play his sidekick. Call her "Pink Lantern" or something...
  • [A]
I totally see Britney Spears as the crack-whore-villain *thumbs up*
  • Anrkist
You want to put WHAT in my lantern?!?!
  • Danisgod6491
    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
  • ^ I'm with this guy

I went all Wrath of Khan reading this post as well
  • Save Green Lantern
no, no, no, no, no, no, please for the love of everything good in this world! DO NOT destroy this iconic character! NO NO NO NO
  • Emerson
Better than Bradley cooper in opposite land
  • please dont...
  • INS
At least its not WILL SMITH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Save Green Lantern
You're racist! How is Justin Timberlake better than Will Smith. I give it to you that it would not make sense since Green Lantern is a white guy. But Will Smith is a much much better actor than Justin " I have a girl voice" Timberlake. You sir are a racist!
  • INS
you're a freaking moron, I said not Will Smith because that fool is in or rumored to be in EVERYTHING recently and am tired of seeing him in movies that dont live up to the hype. Doesnt make me a racist you stupid POS.
  • Save Green Lantern
    Racist!
  • WILLSMIF
Isn't there a black Green Lantern?
  • ...
Am I the only that thinks this a good idea?
I think Timberlake could pull this off...
He's never horrible in any the movies he's been in...
I have faith in him if he's the choice.
    ...
  • Alpha Dog.

I guess he wasn't bad, it was just a terrible movie. But I'll agree, I like JT. I think he also might be a bit to urban or street for GL also.
  • Almost
He would make a good Guy Gardner IMO.
  • tHE
    ^???

Guy Gardner... the red haired macho badass? Maybe you were thinking of Kyle Rayner.
  • cj
people freaked at iron man's casting... and it turned out just fine.
  • who freaked at Robert Downey Jr.?! Yes, people were freaking out when Tom Cruise was rumored, but, if memory serves, people were ecstatic with Downey Jr.'s casting.

This is a terrible idea. Cooper or Fillion=prime choices. I will not see a Timberlake Green Lantern movie.
  • nolacuse
No, cj is right. I remember a lot of grumbling early on about Downey in the role. They didn't think he could pull it off. Once previews and such starting coming though I never heard a peep.
  • Save Green Lantern
Your memory must be affected by this hideous rumor of Justin Timberlake play GL. NO ONE complained about Robert Downey Jr. playing Iron Man. Why? Because Downey IS practically the same person as Tony Stark. Their lives mirror each others. By the way... Robert Downey Jr. IS AN ACTOR!!! A great actor! He is not a horrible pop singer pretending to be an actor.
  • Save Green Lantern
    You're an idoit
  • It's hard to cast Hal Jordan but that's no reason to horribly fuck it up. Hell, i'd prefer that 11 year old from Star Trek.
  • dagreenman18
He's actually a pretty good actor and a really funny dude, so this could work out great.
  • Jonathan
The first Green Lantern with a Dick in a Box.
  • JP
No, this would be a waste. Imagine if JT played Iron Man, Bruce Banner, Bruce Wayne, etc. WB needs to stick with what is working and not make some kind of desperate attempt to appeal to the hip crowd for safe cash. I doubt this will happen.
  • bubbles
awesome. and lets get hannah montana in there too.
  • jesse
Timberlake is an actor playing a pop star so i have no problem with this. he was really good in Alpha dog i thought.
  • Joshua
I can smell the building fanboy rage from here.
For what it's worth, Russ, I completely agree with you. While I would love to see Nathan Fillion in the role, if they're going for star power: why not Timberlake? He's already proven himself not only as a competent actor but as someone willing to take on respectable smaller films. When he could have been in things like 'Step Up 2' and 'Fame,' he's chosen films like 'Southland Tales' and 'Black Snake Moan.' Those who would dismiss him outright are forgetting about The Fresh Prince.
While I may have scoffed at this before seeing him actually try to stretch himself as an artist, I'm willing to give him a shot.
  • kergs
    i agree
  • Marc
You're talkin about the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air? One of the most beloved and funny sitcoms of the 90's? And what does that have to do with Justin Timberlake?
  • plagueoftruth
I didn't think my point was that obtuse. Will Smith was a hip-hop musician who became an actor who people doubted could do serious roles. Not too far off from Timberlake.
It's a completely moot point now, though.
  • sideshowRaheem
Although he's made some questionable choices when it comes to movie roles(Southland Tales, Edison) JT actually a decent actor his performances in "Alpha Dog" and "Black Snake Moan" were pretty good. If people never heard of JT as a musician and just looked as his acting work they wouldn't be nearly as upset as they are. The only problem is that his celebrity would over power the role that he's playing which is probably why he wont get the gig.
  • tHE
Nobody is questioning his acting career and all of his choices insofar have made somewhat sense... I mean, Southland Tales was the promised second coming of everyone's favorite Donnie Darko filmmaker and Alpha Dog wasn't trying to be anything it wasn't.

BUT still... he shouldn't be Hal.
  • alphat
He'd make a better Flash. Has the right look for Barry Allen and could pull off the comedy. But not GL.
  • mike
and maybe the Jonas brothers could play the villains!! Damn, Russ, you got me all excited!!
  • Sigstradamus
I think Chris pine would be great
  • please. no.
  • The Man
and based on the people who do know who the Green Lantern is it would be a tremendous joke! and let's not forget the fact that singers turned actor is a joke as well!
  • Joshua
    What an stunningly narrow view.
  • Travis McGee
Tell that to Will Smith or Kris Kristofferson.
  • Colonel_Kurtz
    Mos Def
  • Save Green Lantern
I think he means awful pop singers turned actors is a joke
  • sammyjankis
I would definitely have other actors as a preference, that said, he has had a ton of great dramatic perfomances. I just feel like he has an overwhelming goofy/comedic connotation that comes to mind when you hear his name. I would not be dead set against it, but I sure as hell prefer Chris Pine, Bradley Cooper, Nathan Fillion, etc.....I can keep going.
  • Captain Awesome
    hahahahahahahaha

    no, just, no.
  • Seriously, is there a big enough "NO!" for this? Justin Timberlake is a terrible actor, damnit. Even the quality of his music is questionable. Bad decision is bad. Lemme guess, Leonardo DiCaprio is also up for the role?
  • nolacuse
Are insinuating that Leo is a bad actor? Maybe I if this was 1998 we could buy that argument, but I think he has more than proved himself at this point.
  • Not a fan. Though I'd prefer him over Bradley Cooper, who has such a douche look about him...
  • Taco
Please dear lord no. I'm guessing (and hoping) that this is just a rumor.

Just get Chris Pine if they want young or Nathan Fillion if they want to go older.
