Kevin Smith Talks About Hit Somebody

In May, Kevin Smith announced that he was developing a movie based on the Warren Zevon song, Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song), which was co-written by sportswriter and Tuesdays with Morrie author Mitch Albom, and featured the backing by The Late Show’s CBS Orchestra, anchored by Paul Shaffer.

With Stern on vacation, I’ve finally found some time to catch up on some of my favorite podcasts, which includes Smith’s Smodcast (highly recommended). In this past week’s episode Smith talked a bit more about the plot of the film.

For those who missed it, here is a transcript:

The main character, Buddy, is a dude who loves Hockey. LOVES it. Sees the beauty in it. Wants to be that which he admires so much. He wants to be in the NHL and wants to play hockey. And he gets a chance to play Hockey but not the way he wanted to. The thing is, the dude is insanely passionate about it but no damn good. And there was a way in, and that way was that the dude could fight. So he finally gets in… we’re going to do it in the WHA (World Hockey Association). He gets to play professional hockey, but at the same time he doesn’t get to play the professional hockey that he dreamed of playing. Because every hockey player, every kid dreams of scoring goals, taking it to the net, you’re the hero and shit. No one dreams about “I’m the dude who fucking hits the guy so that the kid over thereĀ  can take the puck to the net.” And the glory goes to that guy.

The song Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song), has been one of Smith’s favorites for years, and he’s always wanted to make a movie based on it.

what does "with Stern on vacation" mean, Peter?
  • I usually listen to Howard Stern in transit, but he is on vacation.
  • hey is Stern still going around telling radio bosses to give gag orders to people he does not like or is he still all about free speech?
  • Benjamin
He's still doing it. But O&A talk anyways. Thankfully. It's bullshit that he can freely take jabs at them but they gotta sit down with some suits when they jab back. That's a pussy move right there.
  • Stabmaster Arson
Yeah, I haven't heard Stern take a jab at O&A in, I don't know, 3 years? I don't know if they jab back cause O&A is pretty shitty. Like Mancow.
  • i got both stern and o&a and from time to time i ll switch over to stern since i grew up listening to the guy. he still takes jabs at O&A even thou they both work for the same company now. plus i dont think howard has the same passion for this job like he had back in the pre-satellite days.
  • if Kevin Smith is involved, I will see it
  • Emerson
Is there a kevin smith movie that does not involve hockey
  • That actually has a fairly neat concept. Though if it is in the WHA they'll end up playing the Jets, and I don't know if I can handle the Jets as villains.
  • NeutralGrey
    Hmmm, good point.

If he could work in a Bobby Hull cameo I think I could allow it.
  • Kevin
Pete, if you're such a sternite, why no coverage on any possible movies artie lange might be doing?

    just curious.
  • Stabmaster Arson
Artie isn't doing any movies at the moment.
  • Benjamin
Howard Stern sounds like he's been on vacation for fifteen years. What a lazy man. Thanks for ushering a new era of radio, now take your ass off from it.

I'm done talking shit now. This sounds sweet. Can't wait. Hope it turns out to be more toned down and less sappy than his other drama... which I think was a great movie, but this doesn't sound like the project that deserves that kind of treatment.

I saw Zack and Miri two nights ago, it was pretty good, not laugh out loud funny, I kind of chuckled away to it

But about two weeks ago I saw the hockey film Slapshot with Paul Newman and I never laughed so much during a film in such a long time. It's a wonderful film

If this film is only even half the film Slapshot is then I'll go see it

so this is essentially the story of Anaheim's George Parros (also a jersey native).
  • Michael_W
I hope they cast Justin Timberlake as buddy.

    KEVIN SMITH THEORY.......

I have this theory about the once great writer/director Kevin Smith. "we all got old!" I think I saw "Clerks" at the age of 17 and I loved it. In fact I think i should credit Kevin Smith and Clerks for getting me into independent films. The reason why his films dont work or make money anymore is that his initial target audience grew up. and he dooes not appeal to the new wave of late teens twenty somethings anymore. I am now just under 30 married with a kid, I cant bring my young daughter to see zack and mirri so I am stuck eagerly awaiting it to come out to video. So as a one time loyal fan of Smith he will never see my box office dollar. I think the awful "clerks 2 was a last chance effort at regaining his original audience, but it didnt work.

So the Weinsteins are giving him one last shot. with this "dick/cop flick." From the man who said he would never direct something he didnt write. I think if this movie fails like Zack Mirri (which I liked) he will fade away and maybe come up with another original idea like and produce it independently.

Kevin Smith movies have never made any real money...
  • Wagner
A Couple of Dicks is a Warner Brothers film. The Weinsteins have nothing to do with it.
