Watch the First Eight Minutes of The Hurt Locker

Editor’s Note: This video was quickly pulled offline after we posted it on Monday. Summit Entertainment now informs us that the video is back online, officially, on Hulu. So if you missed it on Monday, check out the first 8 minutes of The Hurt Locker embedded after the jump.

The first eight minutes of Kathryn Bigelow’s amazing war film The Hurt Locker are available to watch online, and while the ideal way to see this opening sequence is obviously attached to the full feature, there may be no better way to demonstrate just how taut and involving this movie really is. Watch the sequence after the jump.

The sequence introduces us to almost everything that is key to the film: the Iraq setting, the daily actions of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) squad, Sergeant JT Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) and Specialist Owen Eldridge (Brian Geraghty) and, most importantly, Kathryn Bigelow’s intense yet naturalistic composition and editing. The beauty of The Hurt Locker is that Bigelow never gets in the way of the tension that is inherent to the work of the EOD. Without embellishment, she shows how they contend not only with hidden bombs, but an environment filled with latent hostility. Onlookers may be potential casualties, but may also be responsible for the creation and detonation of the bomb, as you’ll see here.

You’ll also get a good idea of how Barry Ackroyd’s excellent cinematography makes the movie so impressive. Ackroyd shot United 93 and the upcoming Green Zone for Paul Greengrass, and has worked extensively on the naturalistic films of Ken Loach. While Jeremy Renner (not seen in this sequence) is the obvious front man for the movie, giving a performance that is impossible to look away from, Ackroyd is the unsung hero, because his camera never flinches, and only rarely exaggerates.

This clip cuts off before the full end of the opening sequence, which is probably for the best. That means you’ll have to go to the theater to see what happens to Guy Pearce. That’s possible right now depending upon where you live. The Hurt Locker is playing in limited engagements in New York and Los Angeles, and will be expanding to other markets this month. I can’t recommend any other current release more than this one.

Edit from Russ: In the days since I originally posted this, Apple has added a clip taken from one of the movie’s most tense scenes, where Jeremy’s Renner’s character has to defuse a massive car bomb while his support team grows ever more paranoid and uncomfortable. Better yet, the clip is available to watch with commentary from Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal. Check it out in HD at Apple.

I can't figure out when it will open to other theaters outside of NY & LA? This looks like an awesome movie! I was originally turned off from seeing it, but after seeing this clip, I will see this film!
  • I caught this at the Edinburgh Film Festival last month, and I would highly recommend everyone go see it. It's a great film that I really hope gets a wide release.
  • Rockie
I hope for a big release too man........really folks go see this movie.

    it just works
  • Colonel_Kurtz
That's looking pretty, pretty, pretty good.

For the record, back in the day I dropped a 155mm HE round* right between a couple of cows, and one of them walked away apparently unharmed and unfazed. The other one not so much.

*was a live fire exercise, not cement training rounds. The DoD types like to see the real stuff when they visit...fine by me 'cause so do I.

    Good film.

One of the best war movies in the last few years.
  • Oh my god, amazing. When's it out in England?
  • Chris
Its touring a few film festivals in the UK i believe. Try doing a search online to see if it's playing anywhere near you.
  • Luis Enrique
I watched it last week. Unquestionably one of the best war movies in quite a few years.
  • flack manta
Saw it yesterday. Best military film I've seen in a long time. The sniper battle is insane! Jeremy Renner totally makes up for sucking so bad in 28 Weeks Later, even if he looks like he walked right of that film and into The Hurt Locker. Literally.
  • The end.
  • dddbbb
isnt this out on dvd already? cause i'm downlading it... same thing with Hunger.
  • Pat
Saw this at TIFF last year. Best film of '09 right now.
  • So is this the first big contender for major awards come next spring?
  • jason B
yes, hands down this film is award worthy.
  • Dan Berry
    Woahhh!!!
  • jandreoni
Can't wait! Probably won't come to Maine, though.
  • Kyle
Says the video is not available
  • jason B
saw this a week ago: it is absolutely heartbreakingly brilliant. all paries involved deserve awards noms.
  • Ben
Video not available :(. Guess I'll look elsewhere.
  • Ben
Just downloaded it, can't wait to watch!
  • MatthewMiddle
I watched the Hurt Locker, and it's not bad. I'm just surprised at how great slashfilm believes it is. Do you guys have a stake in it?
  • I agree. It was an above average movie with a great sniper scene. I wouldn't say it was any better that generation kill though.
  • skaught
the buzz is not coming from slashfilm alone, the film is rocking a 90%+ on RT and close to an 8 on imdb. the critics all sport wood for this, rightfully so.
  • Chris
This film has been released on disc in some parts of the world I believe. But it's films like this that need all the money they can get, so make sure you PAY to see this film and not just download it.

As far as a wide-UK release, I have no idea, I hope it gets one, but it is upto the distributor and if they think it will make enough money to warrant it.

no doubt will end up in some art-houses.

I'm packed and ready for my trip to San Francisco to see the movie this Friday. I can't wait!
  • Fir3Wolf
I've seen the movie and really liked it. If you can get to a theater that is showing it, do so. Also the video isn't working.
  • Rockie
on a side note, i'm very glad /film is behind this movie

podcast plus interviews......the cast and crew must be happy with you guys
  • Chris
Dammit, the video has been pulled by Summit. I wanted to see it so bad. :(
  • TheMarquis
so tempting, but i'll save it for the theater.
  • Yeay Hulu! I love Hulu, especially because i live in europe.
  • This is a great movie. My favorite of the year so far. Very disappointing that it hasn't reached very far yet. Renner is great and Bigelow's direction amazing.
  • I saw this video at ComicCon in NYC in February. I wasn't impressed with it at all. The camera shots were good, but the acting still pretty much b-rated and over the top drama.

It was like watching Tropic Thunder if it was a real film and not a comedy.
  • Yah, its on Hulu which only works in the US way to advertise your film :|
  • skaught
i actually had a feeling of unease throughout the entire film for every single character, no one, seriously, no one feels safe. this is one of the strongest accomplishments on bigelow's part.
  • Falen
Damn Hulu only working in the USA...
  • I hate these things...watch 8 minutes of Hurt Locker...watch 15 minutes of UP...etc.

I want to see these movies so badly but I do everything in my power to be informed about the movies without spoiling them (IE read news but not watch clips)

So this clip is sitting here haunting me....When is this damn movie playing in Seattle???? I don't want to wait anymore :(
  • Zach
Saw this movie a few months back and was shocked at how well it was. Didn't think it was going to be as good as it was. Jeremy Renner was great in 28 Weeks Later, but after seeing The Hurt Locker I can't wait to see more of his stuff in the future. Aside from that, I can't go into detail without typing a 15 page review. Can't wait to see it again when it is released near me.
  • This movie looks a like it will keep you on the edge of your sit. It seems controversial because the soldiers do not know who to trust. I do not know how they can just walk up to something explosive even with protection on. It’s crazy.
  • MrModern
Wow, now that's entertainment! I have to give it to Kathryn Bigelow, I like her directing style. I can't wait till this movie goes wide...let's hope it does. I started to see commercials for it on television so I'm guessing they are thinking of doing so. The summer movies thus far have been lack luster and this looks to be a jolt for the season.
