lohan scorsese

Did you know: Lindsay Lohan turned down a role in The Hangover claiming that the script had “no potential.” And we’ve just learned that Paramount Pictures supposedly turned down an opportunity to have Martin Scorsese direct The Godfather 2. Read both of the stories after the jump.

Talk about missteps. Apparently a mutual agent or casting director for filmmaker Todd Phillips originally wanted to cast Lindsay Lohan in the role of the stripper for the Warner Bros comedy The Hangover. According to US Magazine, “The agent tried hard to get [director Todd] Phillips to consider her, “and when he finally agreed, Lindsay said she didn’t like the script!” According to the report, Lindsay said the script “had no potential.” Phillips went on to cast Heather Graham in the role and the $35 million comedy has gone on to make more than $269 million worldwide, earning acclaim from both critics and moviegoers.

As you probably know, Francis Ford Coppola never wanted to make The Godfather 2, but Paramount pushed him into it. The filmmaker tells Esquire Magazine that “The ending was clear and Michael has corrupted himself - it was over. So I didn’t understand why they wanted to make another Godfather.” But he told Paramount that he would develop and produce the film if he let this young filmmaker he knew direct it.

“I said, ‘What I will do is help you develop a story. And I’ll find a director and produce it.’ They said, ‘Well, who’s the director?’ And I said, ‘Young guy, Martin Scorsese.’ They said, ‘Absolutely not!’ He was just starting out.”

Any other movie in the history of the universe, and this would have been considered a colossal blunder. But as we all know, Coppola ended up directing the sequel, which has since been considered one of the best films of time.

And yes, we know this has been reported before in Peter Briskind’s Raging Bulls and Easy Riders, but I thought it was a cool fact that most people probably don’t know.

  • I thought that the stripper role in the Hangover was kinda sketched out for someone more famous. It seemed like they wanted an extended cameo.

Also The Godfather series was so overhyped for me by the time I saw it it wasn't as great as people say it is.

"Also The Godfather series was so overhyped for me by the time I saw it it wasn't as great as people say it is."

I think you are on crack. The 3rd one was mediocre, but the first 2 are some of the best movies ever in movie history.

"Also The Godfather series was so overhyped for me by the time I saw it it wasn't as great as people say it is."

Um... No. It is EXACTLY as great as people say it.

I'm not gonna say that you're on crack because I'm a nice dude but You can't let hype destroy your viewing on any movie. Or at least, don't let it because if then everything in the world would be overhyped, you know?
  • Yes. That's exactly the reason I am afraid to watch these movies. This happened to me with Goodfellas. I actually prefer Casino, a Scorsese movie nobody talks about.
  • Scorsese's godfather 2 could have been epic.
  • That's too funny about Lohan. She appears to be in a position where she can pick and choose between all of the scripts that are coming her way. Lohan for Best Actress Academy Award 2010!
  • thank god that Lohan idiot turned it down. I actually quite enjoyed Heather Graham's performance in the movie.
  • Joe
It would have been kind of creepy for Lohan, who I presume is maybe 24 max, to be playing a stripper with a kid who marries a 30-something dentist.

Oddly enough, I do agree with her not taking the role. Would have hurt her career even more, as in "Oh, now all she can play is strippers. Nice."
  • Isaac
Exactly WHAT career are we talking about?
  • Brendan McD
My favorite part in Godfather 2 is when the guy gets stabbed with the glasses.
  • Lohan judging scripts...I guess she won't be doing that when she retires.
  • octoguy
it seems she opted for early retirement.
  • Octoberist
What's so funny about Lohan is that she's in a new TV movie that's coming out. That's right..a TV movie. I forgot which channel though..Fox Family or Disney.
  • gfdsh
George Lucas tried to get Al Pacino for Han Solo
  • penny
Take that Lohan! Cocky celebrities these days . . .
  • TheMarquis
This just goes to show how much taste Linsey Lohan has.

On the Scorsese front, I think it's interesting, but I wouldn't have it any other way. It's not like Godfather II was such a horrible film that would have been great had Scorsese been sitting in the chair. The only big implication I can think of would be that Scorsese's career might be completely different.
  • Rob
I'm apparently also in that minority of people who think the first two Godfather films were certainly worth seeing, but not "great" films.
  • Emma
I agree with you, although I was actually bored through the first Godfather... Too long and overhyped for me. I get why everyone loves them so much, but I would never watch them again.
  • Hutch
Why all of a sudden is the story about Coppola wanting Scorsese for Godfather 2 being treated as some unearthed revelation? This is such an old story, documented both in print, audio and visual countless times long ago.
  • Ok people we get it. You knew the godfather 2 thing but I didn't so thanks for posting it. And Lohan is a pretty idiotic person. The hangovers script had no potential but 'I know who killed me' did? Give. Me. A. Break. Lindsay.

you know in lohan's defense...ah fuck! i couldn't even say it with a straight face! what an absolute stupid waste of life that bitch is. i've always thought she could redeem herself with a solid indie-noir or indie-comedy - here she had the chance & fucked up. shocking.
  • Yeah, I'm glad Heather Graham got the part instead of Lohan. Unlike Lohan, people actually LIKE Graham and wants her to come back to doing bigger movies and not the direct-to-DVD junk she's been doing lately.

I'm also glad that Alison Lohmann was the lead in DRAG ME TO HELL and not Ellen Page.

Lohan's comments kinda remind me of the famous quote from Gary Cooper over Clark Gable being cast in GONE WITH THE WIND. "Well at least Clark Gable will be falling flat on his face and not me."
  • Saif
I'm not a Lohan fan by any means, but maybe she read the first script?
    Before the massive rewrites?
    Maybe?
  • Ryan M
Coppola wanted Scorsese to direct after seeing Mean Streets.
  • mike
Hey Peter, you know what's worse for Lindsay? She's starring in an upcoming TV movie on ABC Family called 'Labor Pains'.

What a horrible move by her if she turned down 'The Hangover' for that..
  • marty should have directed gf 3.
  • drl
    TDK was overhyped.

The Godfather 2, not so much.
  • Gennaro Gattuso
Considering that just the name 'Lindsay Lohan' has become a punchline for armchair misogynists (plenty of those on this comments thread, in fact), you can hardly blame her for turning down the role of a stripper in a movie from noted woman-hater Todd Phillips.

Am I the only person in the world that liked the first Godfather more than the 2nd? Both were great but I liked the first one a little more.
