Funny People Red Band Movie Trailer

It’s trailer madness Wednesday here on /Film. Earlier today we posted the awesome full trailer for Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 and now Universal Pictures has premiered a new red band movie trailer for Judd Apatow’s Funny People. The new uncensored trailer features some of Adam Sandler’s NSFW stand-up routine, more of an emphasis on Eric Bana’s character, Ira’s hilarious video game rant, a better look at Aubrey Plaza’s role in the story, and even a quick look at some of the film’s many cameos. But overall the trailer feels more PG-13 than R-rated. Watch the trailer embedded after the jump, and as always, leave your thought sin the comments below.

Over the past few years, writer/director Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up) has shown that nothing—not even losing your virginity or the miracle of childbirth—is sacred. About his third film behind the camera, he says, “I’m trying to make a very serious movie that is twice as funny as my other movies. Wish me luck!” Apatow directs Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen and Leslie Mann in Funny People, the story of a famous comedian who has a near-death experience. Adam Sandler, Eric Bana, Jason Schwartzman, RZA and newcomers Aubrey Plaza and Aziz Ansari join a cast that reunites Judd Apatow with Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann and Jonah Hill in their third comedy together.

Watch the trailer in high definition on MySpace. Funny People hits theaters on July 31st 2009.

  • that didn't make me laugh too hard in that one, only really funny part was the fuck my way out joke
  • apatow usually keeps his funny for the movies. not trailers.
  • Peter
    Lets hope so
  • his movie is always weird but very funny. I like him.... hahahaa
  • They should have shown this kind of trailer to start with.
  • Sketch
I agree, doesn't show the whole plot to it or most of it I should say.
  • SomeGuy
What's with the shot where the condor and light are in full view?
  • Joe
Aziz Ansari is an up-and-comer? Could have fooled me...
  • Justin
i was always looking forward to this one more than the hangover, and eric bana looks like he'll steal the show.
  • This preview only makes me want to see it more. I've loved most of the films to come out of the "Apatow Repertoire" so I'm excited to see how this one does. It feels more like a dramedy than his past films, but I'm really digging the feel of it.
  • Ya, this looks good. I'd be surprised if it's not good.
  • JackBurton
One funny part, the die hard joke. The rest was shit.
  • jhill
    what?! why?
  • PseudoPhreak
i found none of this trailer funny at all.
Maybe its meant to be ironic?
  • brewer
Maybe because the movie is actually a drama about comedians and not solely a comedy. Think Apatow doing a James L. Brooks movie.
  • Captain Awesome
I'm just not getting these trailers at all. They're not funny. And they don't make me eager to want to see the film.
  • anyone know what songs were in the trailer?
  • K
First half: Dr. Dog - Old Days

    Second half: Wilco - Nothing'severgonnastandinmyway(again)
  • Dupduper
ironic how the movie is called Funny People, and the trailer is not funny
  • Bobby
    Where was Aziz?
  • ramone
I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure this movie is actually drama with humor, not an actual full-blooded comedy.
  • Erick
I think "The third movie by Judd Apatow" kind of gives that away, or at least suggests that Apatow may be taking himself too seriously. I can see why he'd put that in the trailer to differentiate this from whatever Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, or Jason Segal movie is in the mutliplex at the moment, but not even Tarantino pulled that marketing trick off with the "Kill Bill" trailers.
  • Why So Serial?
No, you are right. If people want to be clueless about genres then let them be clueless. It would be like questioning where all the romance is in Die Hard.

THAT WAS A RED BAND TRAILER?!?!?!? There was like no swear words or any kind of nudity or anything to make this trailer red band. It might be a red band trailer to like rated G or PG movies.
  • It doesn't exploit the fact its red band, but its a rated R film, and there are a things in the trailer that aren't appropriate for a general audience trailer. It just gives a better representation of what the film will be.
  • if ur looking for nudity go to tube8 or something
  • crew2006
yea but still, look at the regular trailer for bruno and tell me that thats not worse than this trailer. This trailer can be in the theaters and no one would have known it was red band in the first place. just saying though
  • This is the first Judd Apatow project I've seen in a while that I'm excited for.. It doesn't seem dumbed down for teenagers, doesn't overdo the cliches some of the actors bring along with them, and doesn't seem predictable and like 40 Year Old Virgin or Knocked up.. Everything looks really well done.
  • evanz
You guys are all missing one key point: No freaking Rob Schneider! It's gotta be good.
  • SexBob_omb
I'm also interested to see Adam Sandler toned down and without his terrible posse.
  • Erick
I guess it'll be funny to see Eric Bana in this after the Bana-"Munich" line in "Knocked Up," but... meh
  • Tits Lickum
This was the first stuff I've seen from this movie that looked good. The "fuck my way out of the corner" was awesome.
  • darren
loved the Wilco song in the trailer. can't wait.
  • dagreenman18
Okay, this is the trailer that should have came out first. Trailer 1 spoiled everything about this movie, and that pissed me off.

Still, it's Judd Aptow, so it will be damn funny.
  • Was using Gilbert Godfrey's voice part of Sandler's routine?
  • justrobby
    Needs more Aziz..
  • Nixen
will never be as funny as Bruno!!! Bruno funniest movie of the year actually ever!.
  • I thought redband meant the trailer had at least a clip of boob?

    I feel betrayed
  • Matt
Do you get how pathetic that sounds?
  • Looks fine. Not laugh out loud, but more heartfelt. Actually seems like a small indie flick with a huge cast. I like Sandler's vibe in this. Rogen looks skinny. I'll see it based on Apatow's track record and Jason Schwartzman (who I didn't know was in it before this).
  • THE RZA!!!
  • LuMendz
It's Judd Apatow. You all know you'll still end up watching it one way or another.
  • ericdpalmer
Might actually see this in theaters, the die hard/ikea jokes saved it for me. Jonah Hill makes me cringe every time he comes on screen <hoping he has a minimal role in this...>
  • KingCarlos
Carlos predicts: Funny People will get an Oscar nomination.

    Watch this space...
  • I think it looks good. So I must be retarded or something?

    Anyways, the RZA! Awesome.

And I love that Jonah Hill is wearing a Beirut shirt.
  • Best trailer so far.
  • davesdf
Anything Adam Sandler is in you know there will be lame ethnic stereotypical jokes. The guy is a bully and a fool, the movie trailers showing on t.v. and theaters looks lame. Spend $20.00 to go see anything Sandler is exactly like throwing your hard earned money away.

There are great comedies out there, so save your money for those.
  • I just saw the trailer of it and its is best trailers i have seen. I hope movie will also be good. It will not disappoint the people.
  • keesvd
The IKEA-joke was great, but did he really have to say it out loud? It kind of ruined it for me. But I saw this film and I was really disappointed, it's more of a drama than a comedy and Apatow clearly doesn't know how to make a good drama yet. I'd like to see him go into a different direction but I don't want to see him f*ck the direction up.. If he can't he should just stick with what he does best.
