Full Length District 9 Movie Trailer

District 9

The full trailer for Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 has been released on Yahoo. The new trailer gives you a much better look at the actual story of the film and how the doc-style cinematography will by employed. I really love how the South African setting adds to the realism of aliens living on Earth. Watch the trailer embedded after the jump, and please tell me what you think in the comments below.

Thirty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa’s District 9 as the world’s nations argued over what to do with them.

Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens’ welfare – they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens’ awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA.

The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable – he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Ostracized and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9.

  • Octoberist
the robot suits looks like they came straight from Metal Gear Solid or Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Finally some good designs in film. I'm sick of ID4/War of the World type aliens! I'm all for something new.
  • District 9 looks pretty damn awesome, though I do see some Halo influence on the weapons and alien designs.
  • Really, Halo influence. You don't say.
  • Lance_HBomb
Wow, I wonder where that Halo influence came from.
  • Hat
    Hahaha.
  • spyda
The director of district is the director for the Halo movie project

Try to look for sarcasm before posting the obvious...

Wow that was pretty incredible. Like how they are trying to reveal little as possible when it comes to the plot.

The SFX by WETA I presume look fantastic. Those mechas are pretty sweet.

Looks like the aliens from District 9 might be planning to breakout of the sector and gain control of their ship possibly?

Whatever happens, this looks like quite the ride.
  • Noooooooo I can't watch this at work....damn our crappy work internet!
  • Meli_V
The trailer made my eyes hurt with all the quick cuts, but I'm assuming that is because they dont want to us to see too much. At least I hope... I'm really looking forward to this movie.
  • MickJ
Now THAT is how you cut a trailer. There are aliens, they are here, and they are pissed we're not letting them leave. And that is all you need to know.
  • Dvq
i actually closed my movieweb window to come here and watch the trailer, what can i say? i do love /Film.
  • /Film is a great site. MovieWeb blows...hehe. This movie looks great for sure. If you are interested in another perspective on film check us out :)

    I'll probably see this
  • ScanCase
Ok i was hoping that this film would have kept it's documentary style but instead it now looks to be Hollywood's next scifi action thriller. The teaser promised a metaphoric look into human racism and fears but this new trailer seems to dump most of that and and now focus's on a robot destroying things and aliens fighting marines. Does it still look good yes, head and shoulders above most scifi films coming out recently but only because of the promise the teaser trailer originally gave us. And some of that is still evident here but it is not nearly what I was hoping for. It now seems that the first 15 minutes will be the documentary and the rest will be marines fighting aliens and I've already seen that.
  • Octoberist
To be honest, I think they're trying to pull into the audience by showing a lot of action scenes. Other than that, I think it will still retain its message of civil unjust.
  • ScanCase
I'm not saying it won't retain those theme's. I just feel that it will be more of a surface level look at it then a deep introspective at what's going on in our own world. I'm just a little sad that this full trailer shows us a different movie than what the teaser did
  • headmonkeys
I completely agree. I'm now excited for this film in a different way. I was hoping for something more subdued.
  • Hat
The hell did you think it was going to be? A courtroom drama between CGI aliens and humans? Yeah, that'll put asses in seats. Welcome to the new cinema, where nobody goes to the movies anymore unless it's a tentpole event.
  • ScanCase
Just because something can be big and epic doesn't mean it should. Some of the greatest films are about individual experiances about their personal lives. This film could have been one of the most profound faux-documentary's of at the very least this year. Instead we are getting a another action oriented scifi film, and don't you think we have enough of those.
  • Hat
You are absolutely right, yes the greatest films are about the small things, but ever since Jaws and Star Wars people stopped caring about personal films. Yes there are too many big dumb action films (eg. transformers 2), but since people aren't going to the movies like they used to, to see and take a chance with those films that move us, studios and execs are cashing in on and green-lighting what is most likely to be the next blockbuster. You can thank Spielberg and Lucas for that. They didn't mean to change the game, it just turned out that way.
I mean just look at the comments. Look how many people are claiming that they'll "see it on opening day" or "holy shit that's awesome" or "Sold." Execs see stuff like that and smile, because they know that they can guarantee a revenue generating release, and that's all most of them care about these days.
It's sad and we both know it. But I fear it's here to stay.
  • ScanCase
if you listened to the /film podcast you would know that the guys have already talked about this. There is no reason you can't have it both ways. A film can be smart and make a lot of money. exec's aren't filmmakers as much as they like to think they are. They don't understand what audiences really want so they fall back on the tried and true formula's that have become standard this day and age. Audiences think they know what they want (i.e. Transformers 2) but don't know what they need until you shove it down their throats with amazing story telling that really say's something (i.e. Dark Knight) It's the fault of exec's and marketers that these stories don't get out more.
Now I'm hoping that this movie will turn out to have the documentary style throughout its run time and this full trailer is just fooling us into thinking it's an alien action film so that when people sit down they get what the need and actually think about the world around them instead of getting what they want which is mech's fighting aliens.

If what you're looking for a great Sci-Fi movie about an individual experience, try Moon. The type of movie you described is still being made, albeit on a smaller scale and without the giant distribution. District 9 has always been a big-budget summer blockbuster.
  • i know, aliens are totally in our world, in my opinion, your kind of an idiot
  • ScanCase
what are you even referring too? Your sentence doesn't even address anything that's been said.
  • Twitter Sucks
you're right it does feel very different from the original trailer and the original short film. But, i almost see that this movie is trying to hit a lot of birds with one stone. First of all it's Neil's first feature film, I'm sure he wants to try and mix it up, blend action with drama, with morals etc. I don't know how the whole Halo movie project is doing, but honestly I think this is also Neil trying to prove to greedy producers that he can make Halo not only a good fun action movie, but as he seemed to insist upon: "a good sci fi" movie. Which honestly, I feel that is the approach to something like Halo and I am really interested in his take on it, I always thought that series would make a better film than games.
  • ScanCase
Everything you said is completely true. And i'm really looking forward to this film even if i didn't immediately blow this trailers metaphoric "tra la la."
  • Yazzhole
    Um....

    .....get over yourself.
  • ScanCase
You're not very familiar with this site are you?
  • if the movie moves forward from documentary to thriller... it's gonna save my summer blockbusters :D
    can't fucking wait
  • holy fuck that looks great.
  • TheMarquis
That looks pretty damn good. I'm expecting a lot from this movie now, and expecting to hear a lot from Neil Blomkamp in the future.
  • awesome, can't wait!
  • can't wait to see it but I will say it is very similar to Alien Nation.
  • ash
Holy cr@p!! This is MINDBLOWING stuff!!
  • gram
