7 Minutes Of Harold Ramis Talking Ghostbusters 3

Harold Ramis

For months and months we’ve been reading snippets from interviews with the original Ghostbusters cast and crew talking about Ghostbusters 3, which is in development. But our friends at MakingOf have director Harold Ramis (who played Egon in the original films) talking about the possibility of making a third film for almost seven minutes. He talks about how the effects might be transformed in this new computer generated world, making it look low-tech, the unproduced draft of Ghostbusters in Hell script, and how the project is developing, and the danger of making sequels. Watch the interview after the jump.

    Harold Ramis is the man.
  • Gelman
There's a great opportunity here to do something none of the other reboots have done yet: stay in the time period of the original films. What makes Ghostbusters still fun to watch is the somewhat cheesy '80s-style camera work, wardrobe, and scenery. I really don't think a "modern" GB would be all that fun; it wouldn't have the same feel. If they put this next film in 1990, and shoot it with the same type of cameras and film, there would be ample opportunity for jokes (Egon: "I'm working on a world-wide communications system where we can send electronic mail." Venkman: "Good luck with that, Egon. I'll stick with stamps.") And it would just have that same "feel" as the originals. I also don't want to see super-CG'd ghosts. They should use the same level of special effects available back during the original films.

    And bring back Annie Potts.
  • Anrkist
Yeah... I'm really not sure father time would allow for your idea. It would be a bit confusing to see 60 year old guys running around only a year after the previous one. They are good actors, so who knows, maybe they could pull it off.
  • Gelman
How 'bout this: I think they could make Annie Potts still look young, and the guys could return from catching some ghosts. Potts says to them: "What happened? You guys look like hell!"

Murry responds: "Egon crossed the streams."

We never really learned what would happen if they did that. Now it's answered!
  • But they did answer it.

Try to imagine all life as we know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in you're body exploding at the speed of light.

    Total protonic reversal.

Alright that's Bad? Ok, important safety tip, thanks Egon.
  • See, this is the problem with period movies today, especially movies set in the 80s. Everything becomes riddled with irony. The gags about present-day technology in its infancy (cell phones and CD players seem to be big go-to objects of ridicule) and the outrageous fashions (not for nothing, but I hardly remember seeing normal people walking outside wearing hot pink tank tops off the shoulder and leg-warmers as EVERYDAY clothing) are cute the first time around but wear really thin. And not for nothing, but email was around in 1990, so that wouldn't work. This idea would turn a potentially awesome movie into The Wedding Singer. It'd just be a poor attempt at saying "Hey, we're in the 80s...look how goofy we were." Weak. If I want nostalgia, I'll watch the first 2 movies. Their target audience for the actors/director is obviously those who grew up with the movies, but you can bet this will be marketed to the teen demographic who were born AFTER the 80s and wouldn't get the sight gags anyway.
  • SpookyTom
That is awsome thats a great idea and very funny too.
  • joe
    you're a jerk!
  • Octoberist
I agree with him with Spider-Man 3 and Indy 4 though he too has some rotten apples in his resume.

I hope Ramis loses some weight. I don't expect him to be super fit but thinner than what he is now!!!!
  • quintushalls
Ghostbusters 2 wasn't that great and Year One was abysmal. Though the Ghosbusters videogame is cool & fun, so I have some high hopes for Ghostbusters 3. But it is still risky.
  • Travis McGee
Why do you need him to be thinner? He could of gotten fat off of twinkies.
  • Octoberist
BTW, the video was choppy has heck, even on the official making of site. They need to fix it!
  • Wasn't choppy here.
  • samboni
    I love Harold Ramis
  • Sketch
Sweet. It wasn't choppy for me. Nice little quick interview there.
  • TheMarquis
I love Making Of, and getting to hear Ramis talking frankly about movies is awesome. I hope stuff like this continues.
  • Octoberist
I think Ramis has the right attitude because I do agree that Ghostbusters as a franchise should be low-tech no matter what, even in the world of CGI.

I'm sure the ghosts will be CGI, but preserve their cartoony look from the first two movies and cartoons.
  • Steve
    I agree with you.
I hope they keep the comedy/Action element of the first 2.
  • Hopefully the "apatow crew" talk is true and they bring them in because they could easily play the "new" ghostbusters
  • ....I dont think so. The Apatow crew is a different brand of comedy. THey're no where near the same wit as the Ghostbusters crew. If you like that idea, great. but i think that would ruin the movie.
  • Enthropii
    Agreed.
  • I couldn't agree more. While I like the Apatow films, their brand of humor is too low-brow for this film. Seriously, I don't need any gratuitous penis shots or unnecessary bodily harm. Getting slimed is about as harmed as anyone needs to be in this film...no need for having hair ripped out of their bodies, pink eye from questionable pranks, or numerous punches to the groin. Don't take it to that level. The story is what should drive the movie, not gross-out humor and bong hits.
  • NoahCross
Horrendous. I don't know why any sane person would consider this a great idea. Ramis is/was a great comic director - and seemed to be advancing into a different stage of his career with 'The Ice Harvest' (yeah, it sank without a trace, I like it a lot). Now he's been adopted by the Apatow clan... just barf. The two shouldn't co-exist. And neither should GB III. Is Seth Rogen et al really a match for Bill Murray? I'd rather take Chris fucking Farley, frankly.
  • Gelman
You didn't finish the joke: "And he's dead!"
  • reason
You're going to be an angry nobody for as long as you live. Just another brainless tool on the internet. No one will ever give even a half of a half of a shit about you or anything you have to say. Unless you wake up.

Get off your ass, walk into the bathroom, open your eyes for the first time in your entire life, and take a good long look at yourself. You're not going to like what you see. How could you? But there is the possibility that seeing yourself as the spineless pig that you truly are, might inspire you to change.
  • that's harsh.

but I'm with you, Apatow has his moments, but the two should never coexist
  • Fir3Wolf
I'm on board for anything Ghostbusters. Hopefully it can be as good as the first two movies. Heck even the game had its moments that I really enjoyed.
  • Al
I really want a Ghostbusters 3. But like i'm sure many have said before I want THE ghostbusters. Not some new guys. The original cast is what made ghostbusters ghostbusters. If it's a bunch of new guys, no matter who they are or how funny they are, they will just be imitators. There will only ever be four ghostbusters.

I like that he wants to keep the lo-tec (is a particle accelerator lo-tec?) lo-tec LOOKING aspect of it. Play that off against some totally NON cartoony super dooper state of the art CGI actually quite scary and even disturbing looking ghosts that are beleivable and they are on to a winner.

Harold mensions that everyone might have a slight desire to see the appocolypse. Could he be hinting at the proposed premise for GB3. I hope so because that would be awsome. It would be like the first Ghostbusters multiplied by a million!
  • Drew
Sweet, hope this movie is good. Nice interview.
  • dubwah
GB 2 was horrible, but i guess a third installation would hurt to redeem the original, maybe do a twist and make it a thriller but have funny lines, not a full out comedy cartoony feel,
  • Octoberist
Ghostbusters 2 wasn't horrible. I mean, it's still watchable. It was just very forgettable.
  • I think GB 2 is just as good, though not as classic as GB. I love GB2.

Keep kickin' libby, you make this work, we'll set you up with a vacation in vegas with the jolly green giant.
  • Solid
    Oh egon's so sexy
  • Wow. He sounds exactly like Noam Chomsky.
  • Solid
I have to ask, Has he not watched the GB cartoon from the 80s? We've already had well done gb sequels and that was just a toon for kids. If the movies were taken half as seriously as some of the best RGB episodes, it'd be fine. The show proved it long before you got fat egon.
  • jason B
very levelheaded, down-to-earth, awesome, cool guy. i want him to adopt me & teach me EVERYTHING he knows about filmmaking.
  • Octoberist
He's pretty in touch with movies and pop culture.
  • Bob
GB3 has to be a movie about the ORIGINAL ghostbusters.

If there's a small subplot about training some new guys, that's okay. But if it's going to just be a ten minute cameo of the original Ghostbusters and then they turn over the rest of the movie to the new kids, it's going to suck worse than Shia starting to put on Indy's hat.

I know Hollywood is always reluctant to make movies starring older actors, but it might actually be interesting to show how four guys who have trapped ghosts their whole lives deal with getting along in years and wondering how they'll get to spend eternity.

Certainly more interesting than some young and sexy "Teen Ghostbusters squad" who gets a quick lesson from the old team, and then rushes off to have their own wacky adventures..
  • Unbusted Ghost
I think if they used some of the same effects, like the streams and (possibly digitally enhanced) puppets the look could largely be kept intact without moving into that whole "high gloss" contemporary blockbuster feel.

'Cause I mean really, the streams from the proton packs look absolutely believable to me now when I watch the movies. I don't want to see cgi special effects everywhere if the old techniques still are effective.
  • I totally agree, but have you played the game? The streams being Cg look awesome!
  • this makes me feel so much better about a third ghostbusters, knowing that he might direct it, and that he knows what to do and what not to do. ONe of my biggest fears was the ecto 1 being like a hummer or an escalade and that all the monsters would be some CGI monstrosity. Granted I don't think we can escape the CGI, but at least they're aware of the numbing affects of the craft and thus are less likely to overuse it. If the new movie is anything like the video game (minus the anticlimactic ending) I would be more than happy to see a 3rd Ghostbusters.
  • crazymrtibbs
I love the fact that Ramis speaking invokes so much interest. He clearly has a deep understanding of what makes a decent film, if not a good comedy. He knows directing is out of his range for a project of this size, but can ground an eccentric (ie Akyord, who I love) and even out a script. The two, plus classic Murrary, are what make the movie work for everyone. I hope they get it right if they bring in a new crew. Murray hasn't done any un-serious comedy for a few years.
  • I love this, man. And I love this man. He's saying all the right things that tickle my ears and he seems to have good perspective (compared to say, Lucas and Speilberg before Indy 4).

I'm excited. I don't care what the haters say.

Honestly, I'm mostly just worried about their haircuts. You gotta have the Egon do and I haven't seen Dan Akroyd in a movie without a bad flat top in years.
  • zamarov
He seems like a really nice guy. He's definitely approaching the film in the right way.
Groundhog Day is probbaly my favourite comedy of all time along with Annie Hall and the Odd Couple.
  • Asshole
How the hell am i supposed to watch this when the video judders constantly. Server fail.
  • tim
HAROLD RAMIS SHOULD DIRECT HIS FILM IF IVAN REITMAN DOESN'T. RAMIS KNOWS THAT THE STORY AND THE CHARACTERS ARE NUMBER 1 PRIORITY AND HE WOULD DELIVER A GREAT MOVIE. RAMIS IS A PERFECTIONIST IN THAT HE WOULDN'T TOUCH THIS FILM UNLESS HIMSELF, MURRAY AND AKYROYD BELIEVED THAT IT COULD BE AS GOOD AS THE FIRST MOVIE. HE IS SAYING ALL THE RIGHT THINGS IN THIS VIDEO....I LIKE WHERE HIS HEAD IS. TOO MANY PEOPLE IN HOLLYWOOD ARE ONLY OUT TO MAKE A BUCK...ITS REFRESHING TO SEE SOMEONE CARE ABOUT A MOVIE AND THE STORY.
  • bad
your video player is shocking. No visual buffering clue and if you want to pause it, back to the start it goes. Annoyingly bad.
  • smitty
    worst video player in existence.
  • tevil
to be honest i have waited for a third after the less than appealing to me sequel; whihc was not bad by all means but the whole "statue of liberty being controlled by a joystick" was as bad as the Freddy Kruger with a power glove to me. other than that the movie was interesting and good (just needed a differant "less powerful" ending).

i appreciate ramis attitude and honesty towards sequel films and todays standards and hope he sticks with them but of course CGI will be expected.

but PLEASE no ghost busters in hell. you can do better than that.
and maybe update the GB theme sond to some heavier updated rock/rap (not limp biscuity or linkin parkish but maybe more N.E.R.D'ish or something a little tamer).

there are so many angles you can take with this PLEASE do it right. nothing is worse than waiting for a movie to have it crush your anticipations in disappointment (GHOST RIDER YOU SUCKED OUT LOUD!!!!!!!, kill marc steven johnson!)
  • hotpoketz
Let me say 1st of all, how refreshing it was to hear Mr. Ramis speak his mind fully on the new movie. As a huge(some say overly obsessed) fan, to have a 3rd movie would be a dream come true. However with dreams, you also have nightmares. It would crush me to see them take ghostbusters, and just completely over use effects and CGI, and make another "money maker" instead of taking care of us fellow fans. The game was awesome( if you disagree, then I'm sorry, but maybe you weren't the ghostbuster you thought you were), and I'm very happy with the new lore, but maybe that should be the third movie, or better yet, make another game, with another great story. All and all, this interview really opened my eyes, and made my fingers cross even tighter. I will say that it will still not stand as tall as the first, but maybe with learning from mistakes of others, it will be handled correctly and we will get the Ghostbusters 3 we've always wanted.. thanks for reading and happy busting!!!!
