Mortal Kombat 3 Filming in September?

Mortal Kombat

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about a new Mortal Kombat movie. Back in September of last year, director Christopher ‘mink’ Morrison told moviehole that they were still trying to find the money before going ahead with Mortal Kombat 3 (or whatever it will likely be titled).

And then there is that pesky lawsuit filed by film producer Larry Kasanoff (Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation) and his production company Threshold Entertainment against Midway Games alleging intellectual property claims to the Mortal Kombat franchise. But somehow all pending lawsuits filed against Midway were magically “resolved” last week, right before the court gave Warner Bros the okay to acquire Midway. We assume this means out of court settlements. But does this mean that a new Mortal Kombat film is closer to reality?

FirstShowing has discovered an article in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune where 44-year-old eighth-degree black belt Chris Casamassa claims he’s set to start filming the third Mortal Kombat film in September. Casamassa is a stunt performer who played the role of Scorpion in the first two films. Is it possible that Mortal Kombat 3 now has funding from new Midway owner Warner Bros? It’s also possible that Warner Bros could produce the film on the cheap and release it through their Warner Premiere direct-to-dvd/Blu-ray unit. Who knows.

Right now we’re going off a short quote from a stunt actor, so I don’t feel the need to speculate much further. The real question should be, do we really need another Mortal Kombat film? Didn’t we learn our lesson from Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, which is considered one of the worst movies of all time (rated 3.1 out of 10 on IMDb)?

listen remakes work... two names, star trek, and batman.
  • as a mortal kombat fan i have 2 say the only thing that was great more fighters from the game and the worse part is the begining of the movie where did that white shirt came from when in part 1 he ended it with his shirt off also the replay where lui kang does his pose twice after he knocks down shao khan jajaja i gotta say part 1 is at its greatest their should be a remake of part 2

i honestly loved mortal kombat 2, it may not have been as good as the first and the acting was lacking but it had some cool fight scenes and of course the soundtrack was just as good as the first, honestly i wish i could go help these people with the movie, i feel i know what makes mk so good and over the past 15 years they have been getting away from it, they need someone to knock some sense in to them and ive been counting the days tell they released a 3rd since the second and first where made, always daydreaming bout it and if they turn this into some cheap instant bluray movie i will be so pissed!
  • riding hollywood's ass
mk1 was unbelievably awesome, mk2.. you had to be a realy big fan to just enjoy the energy that was put into the characters you favored.. As for mk3, with how all the latest super-hero movies haave been looking, so morbid and dark, great effects, mk3 would be making perfect timing, it was just ahead of its time. tony jaa is a given for kung lao, i say get Quan Chi in as the main villian in this one. spice it up with (doesnt have to be great) but good story line, hand it over and let warner bros. work their money magic and i think its safe to say we've got a pretty promising hit. oh yea and rating it "R" would be an obvious choice, considering most of its original hardcore fans are over 18 by now and all the beloved ripping out guts images portrayed in the game. all this is possible, i have hope.
  • elian cruz
if there is going to be that film the actors should be jet li as kang lao jackie chan as lao kang the rock as scorpian vin deisal as sub zero and the great kali as the guy with 4 arms

    lol kalis dead dumbass

it dosent mater how bad the first two where, u know how many movies are being re-made? and when they are released they are better than the originals. there has been a big difference in directing and effects since 1999
i think now when graphics are at their peak now is the time to awakin the franchize
  • Dayd111
I love MK. But I hope this will be a rated "R" movie.
  • Diesyn
This film will be made. The last two were not all that great because they lacked the special effects that they have today. It will be darker, more gritty and filled with blood and gore. Scorpion, Sub-zero, Liu kang, Johnny cage, Sonja, Kitanna, Raiden, Reptile, Smoke, Goro, Baraka, Kano, Mileena, Jax, Shang Tsung and other Characters will be incorporated. From Earth to Outworld. Full Mortal Kombat story to be unfolded for the first time in the film history. My opinion lol.
  • rekofromchicago
The filming has gone into affect currently in New orleans! This film is stated to be a remake only alot darker. There was a more gruesome brutal version that was intended to be doen the first time around and now I think we just might get what we need to make us forget about that bad 'ole Annihilation, lol! Alot of suprises are suppose to be in store.

i love the story of mortal kombat and i love the games. if they make another one it will have to have the same people and put i some of the people from the games that weren't in the movies so far... and the second wasn't great but now warner bros is making it so MORTAL KOMBAT!!!

PS: you have to have the same theme song to if you change the theme song then im not watching it

wow dude, ur stupid... just because one mortal kombat film didnt do well doesn't mean the problem is MORTAL KOMBAT itself... obviously factors like actors, money, directing, scriptwriting, and overall production play a roll

so yes we DO need a MORTAL KOMBAT REBOOT... it's an awesome story melding many ancient eastern legends and mythologies together ... how could THAT be a bad idea?
  • thewiseone
sooo...why all you so skeptical? think about it. with the technology we have now these days with special effects, this movie could be soemthing. we got the original actors which is a giant plus, and if we get a good script and a good dorector whos willing to put up a decent budget for the film then this movie has the potential to be amazing. the first movie was good i agree, and the second sucked....but this movie is a new start on the mortal kombat films from what ive heard...
  • Brandon
The graphics of 300(made by warner bros) was awesome with blood and gore and the acting was great, and if they do mortal kombat knowing how awesome the story is,the next movie would be awesome. imagine what the fight scenes would be like.Besides the games had blood and gore and actual fatalities. the movies so far have been a blow in the gut to all the Geniuses behind the mk games. and come on. the acting in the first too were worse than street fighter with people popping out of no where is sucked. We need actors like tony jaa to play lou kang and christian bale to be johnny cage.Gerard butler should be shou kahn,
  • Mortal Kombat 2 was way better than the first and this one better be good
  • The_Kid
Are you serious? You can't be, MK2 sucked huge king kong gorilla nuts, it was awful. Part one was way better. I hope your comment was sarcasm.
  • the first mortal kombat was good, but the second was terrible and what I think about warner bros. doing this movie is that it can be a benefit because look at all the good movies that warner bros. did: the Lethal Weapon franchise, Dark Knight, the first Matrix, 300, and batman begins. it might have a 65% chance of being a good movie, but it has a 35% chance of not being a good movie because of the bad movies it made like speed racer, 10,000 B.C. and Batman and Robin but on the other hand, it has a good chance at being a good movie, I hope that it does not go straight to DVD because most straight to DVD movies are junk and have crappy acting and terrible scripts and awful special effects, it should be theatrical.
  • It's been nearly a dozen years since the stinkbomb that was "MK: Annihilation" hit theaters, and I agree with the poster who said that Conquest sucked. Why they're even bothering with a third movie at this point boggles the mind.

Plus, here's an overlooked nugget: this sequel should probably be titled Geritol Kombat. The two confirmed cast members, Linden Ashby (Johnny Cage) and Chris Casamassa (Scorpion), will be 50 and 45 next year, respectively. If Christopher Lambert (52) and Robin Shou (49) return as well, then the filmmakers will have to use walkers in the fight scenes. Maybe they ought to bring aboard Wilford Brimley and Betty White to round out the cast.

I'll be skipping this one when it comes out.

fuck off the first mortal kombat is the best video game to movie adaptation ever. by FAR. if someone with talent got behind the camera they could make a good movie. Paul WS Anderson doesnt have talent and he made a good movie. Especially if Lambert comes back which he said he would
  • I have real respect for the creators of the game. Not often people actualy research what they're writing about - and they did. They even managed to sneak in some Chinese-type mythology to go along with it. Unfortunatly the whole thing was "sold-out". Ah well, welcome to reality where we all end up slaving away and giving up our principals for cold, hard cash.

As for you guys attempting to offset these films against the likes of street fighter, dont. Guess we all like different things, different ways. It would be like trying to compare a can of Stella Artois (the Sindel in MK2 was HOT) to a can of Tennants Super (which I hear is van dammes favoured drink).
  • Larry
I say, why not? The first 2 were varying degrees of amusing junk: second being so awful it was greatly entertaining; the first being fun cheese. Audiences know what they're getting into with this film. The games never had great stories to begin with, so, really, who's going to be all that, reasonably, disappointed with this new film?
  • Shao Kahn's Bald Head
Fuck it make a third, make it super ridiculous. Get the assholes from Deadly Alliance through Armageddon and we're set.
  • zack
i hope its not straight to dvd. but ill see it depending on how itll look
  • Lei
I am always ready for another Mortal Kombat! Chris Casamassa had awesome fight scenes in "Conquest" and I am looking forward to see more work from him in any capacity in the new movie (which I hope happens for real this time).
  • MadNik
Really now? This is interesting. I guess with Warner Brothers buying the company, it's very possible that MK will continue on the big screen. I'm ok with that, but personally, I'd like to see a reboot as opposed to another sequel. Get it started with a fresh coat of paint. I'm sure there are plenty of die-hard fans that could write a decent script for this.
  • The 2nd was horrible because of the absence of one special man....Christopher Lambert FTW!!!
  • Guest
if WB is producing the sequel or reboot then im for a Mortal Kombat movie but since Threshold is producing the movie it will suck. a true Mortal Kombat movie should be a R-Rated
  • _spinster_
I've always compared the Mortal Kombat and X-men movies, here they have so many characters in these stories but in the films, they only choose a couple of them to put in, wats up wit that
  • pushon
    nice movies
  • it should be re-done, the mortal kombat mythos is great. Only thing i hated about mortal kombat was no blood and lame fatalities, the characters were great (who didnt think it was cool when scorpion and sub-zero both came out from the dark on the boat?) i hope it does well.
  • Peter R
I own the first two. They were decent action fighting movies. Way better than Street Fighter and Dragonball. They need to go all the way with this one though and shoot for the R-rating. Get some blood, some less lame outfits and some skin and this could be a reinvention of the series.
  • Ricardo Du Toit
Indeed they were better-ish than Street Fighter... And definitley than Dragonball (why didn't they make that a japanese movie?!?!?!?)...
About the R-Rating, you've got a good point there. After all, most (if not all) MK games were rated Mature because of blood, guts and nudity. Why not put that on the screen??? The answer is the same to all movies... They want as much people as possible to go see it. But maybe if they risk it a little, maybe they'll get somehting going on...!!!
  • Thing is they don't care about making good movies, they care about another preciou$$$ thing.
  • Cool Aid
Make it serious, Barbaric. Like Conan and Bloodsport. Make it good like Nolan did for batman. Taratino could do it. Make Tony Jaa Kung Lao.
  • jamalthecritic
omg dude that is one of the most amazing things i have read..

    tony jaa would be epic
  • assassinatingninja
i just want to see a MK film. but a prequel would be good just to show more of the sub-zeros clan and scorpions. film should highlight the tournament that Kung Lao was in. where he fights goro and shit. that film would be epic. have the same actor reprise his role as tsang tsung and have it be like he is an undercover fighter in disguise and kung lao figures it out and shit. just brainstorming here. more of the clans and origins of the robots and shit too., like cyrax smoke, etc.
  • this might sound crazy and stupid but games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter really do have the potential to be good movies. You just need to find the perfect writer and director, a fan that is actually familiar with the series.
  • brian
id like to point out the originals... if the writer understood the old nintendo and sega versions and made the movie off those dark worlds then itd be hella sick, the new mks are like a whole different game, still cool but not mk in my eyes and to add to this whole argument that there has neva been a video game turned into a movie that was good...? wtf mate, everyone thats brought that up to me say its true, then i ask, what about mk1?? and they are like, oh yeah.. i did like that movie!!! never once have they said anything different. only some of these fags leaving comments seem to think that otherwise! and yes minhai hossain i agree with you!
  • Solid
MK 1 is a classic. MK 2 is a tragedy. I knew there'd be a lot of comments about videogame movies sucking... whatever, there's nothing wrong with adapting videogames, it's when hollywood half asses the adaptation that we get street fighters and double dragons, + that bullshit doa movie. To some extent tomb raider though she had the tits so it was ok. An mk done with today's level of fx and an actual good story, not some free for all costume party like MK 2 would be great. I want a mega man movie while they're at it. Chop chop hollywood.
  • assassinatingninja
agreed, and most of the time the actors and directors arent even fans of the comics and games. some actor reads a comic or two and is suddenly a fan and knows everything about the characters. at least get to know the story from a fans perspective and then and only then are you at least guarented to make a good film based on the basics of the comic or game.
  • Name
Mega Man would be Awsome!!!!!!! and MK done visually like say in the style of blade 2 or watchmen would gain my respect.

Hollywierd don't low budget this thing,, if you are gonna do it spend at least 65 million
  • sammyjankis
The first two attempts were god awful. No one learns their lesson with video game movies (ie-Hitman, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Max Payne, etc) Let's put video games on screen that actually have a shot at being good....(Halo)
  • Agemoi
I actually thought Max Payne was "All right." Probably the best video game adaptation so far, but of course the bar is low for these movies. The new street fighter was fuckin hilarious. Watching Chris Klein pretend to act was the funniest thing ive seen on screen in years. But yeah, HALO would be amazing. Theres this site where people document themselves making Spartan costumes and whatnot, so if people can do it Hollywood acn do it.

Plus, rumor has it Neil Blomkamp and peter jackson did District 9 to really prove they haev the stuff for a halo film... Cross our fingers right? :/
  • Brendan McD
I wouldn't say Max Payne was atrocious, but I loved Max Payne, and I thought the movie was bad.

One of my favorite video game adaptations would probably be Silent Hill.
  • Agemoi
Fair enough. Silent Hill was #2 on my list so im with you there. Hollywood needs to get people that care about and understand the franchises. It's not brain surgery. I get it's a business, but smart business is good business and vice-versa ((not always but you get the idea)). You get someone who will put time and effort in a proper adaptation and you'll get a good movie true to mythology that will appeal to fans and a broader, mainstream base. Comic book films FINALLY got it, so its not long until games get it. I think HALO needs to become the poster child for video game adaptations, i have a good feeling that after district 9 Neil Blomkamp and Peter Jackson will be able to deliver the goods.
  • The_Kid
If Warner Bros produces the film it has a decent chance at being an okay movie.
  • The truth here is that after the second one, they made the Conquest TV series, which pretty much sucked.
As a MK fan, I couldn't find a big connection between the series and the games.
A few years ago, when MK3 was being mencioned, I noticed that on IMDB that Johnny Cage was returning. Could they be using his revival as a plot to the movie? If they are, they better make it good as hell otherwise it's another FAIL for the gaming adaptations to film.

About the DC Universe, I believe it only works in the game... I don't see Sub-Zero freezing Batman and taking his guts and I sure as hell don't see Flash giving lighting to Raiden, the God of Thunder...
