New District 9 Poster

When Sony released the teaser poster for District 9, I complained that they should have made the sign smaller, and the spaceship bigger. The new theatrical one-sheet does just that. The new trailer hits theaters this Friday attached to Bruno. But you won’t have to head to the theater to see it, as it will premiere on Yahoo first this Wednesday. But for now, check out the new poster after the jump.

Awesome poster. Replacing the Moon poster with this as my background.
  • Tim
Honestly cannot wait, I really hope its not just all hype.
  • Goofy
Rated R for Bloody Violence and Pervasive Language.
  • sdasd
Looks awesome. Can't wait for this.
  • Oh wow! That looks incredible. "You are not welcome here" is beyond incredible. Setting this as my wallpaper as well.

I don't understand why it says 'a film by NEILL BLOMKAMP' in giant letters above the title. Nobody knows who the fuck he is. This only means that this guy has a massive ego and is pretty impressed with himself. It's embarassing and pathetic. NEILL BLOMKAMP just went down a notch in my book, which puts him at notch -1 because I've never seen a goddamn thing he's done.
  • He's got a cult following due to the short film of which this is based on (You can see it on YouTube in its entirety). And the fact that PETER JACKSON appears above it in the same size and styled text tells me that they are simply trying to draw as many people in as possible. Not only are you going to get the LoTR fans (which is what Jackson's name will forever be known for) but you are also going to attract those that have seen his short film on YouTube.

To me... this works just fine.
  • gram
I just watched the short film online. IT"S 6 FUCKING MINUTES LONG. Where the fuck does this cult meet, the center for ADD treatment?

This guy's got a long way to go to earn my respect. If he wants people to remember his name he should just change it to somthing that better suits his sensability, like STRIKER AWESOMESON!!!
  • mbellerbrock
He's also got a pretty big following from his Halo short, he was picked to direct the Halo film before it was canned. Many people consider him a visionary, including obviously Peter Jackson... but what does he know.

You can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxdvGO1oOF0

Did you perhaps stop to think that maybe it wasn't his decision and some studio exec thought that putting his name on it would attract the niche that blomkamp has as a cult following, and not blomkamp himself. Don't fly off the handle about something that really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Oh well. his name is big. who gives a shit? clearly you do. Gram. He's in all likelihood not the one who had anything to do with the poster. calm yourself, because you're coming off stupid, and I don't think you want people to think you're stupid. Everything will be okay in the world, even if blomkamp does want his name really big on a poster. I promise.
  • gram
Everybody in the world who is a cult follower of NEILL BLOMKAMP knows all about this movie. The studio doesn't need to go after those people. That is why you are stupid. You are far dumber than i am because you do not understand that.

i think it's fucking ridiculous how gram appears in bold letters above everything you post. you are clearly a class A douche bag, and should probably eat a gun.

or maybe that's how just how this website looks and it's not that big of a deal at all.
  • Captain Awesome
Did Neill Blomkamp kill your family?
  • super_aj
I don't want to call you my hero, but certainly something bordering on demi-god, because it takes a special kind of someone to completely miss the point I was making. I'm not dumb for not knowing that. Because I do in fact understand, as any fan of anything knows, that people who like an artists work follow the news about said artists upcoming works. To imply that I for some reason don't understand that is hilarious. But if you take your time and read all of those little words put together to make a sentence, just for you. you might see that I said "maybe it wasn't his decision and some studio exec thought that putting his name on it would attract the niche that blomkamp has as a cult following" THE STUDIO EXEC. Not me. But I'll give you 5 awesome points for trying to counter my argument.
  • Kuillin
I wonder, what makes you think he gives a shit about earning your respect? Assuming you went to school, did you not put your name on the cover page of your assignments you anal nitpicky asshole.
  • Bon Champion
NEILL BLOMKAMP didn't design the poster. He likely had zero say in the placement and size of his name.
  • What... so authors should start taking their names off the cover of their books?

It's a story that he's been working on for years as a side project while doing his fulltime gig as an effects artist. He put out a short film which this is based off of.

Same as Shane Acker and the new animated film "9". It's his project that he slaved over for years...no one has heard of him either, but this upcoming film is his and he's earned the right to put him name up there.

Especially with both District 9 and "9" are both films that have a lot of substance to them. They aren't THE MUMMY or SCOOBY DOO or some soul-less summer blockbuster....these are projects that have involved years and years and years on a personal level not including the studio time. They deserve the recognition.
  • Hoopla
They're trying to get Neill Blomkamp's name out there, in hopes of kickstarting the Halo movie. If Blomkamp himself gains a lot of attention for this film, he will be a viable option for future projects that Jackson wants him for, which had not been the case in the past (Blomkamp, Jackson's choice for the Halo movie, was rejected by the studios).
  • Captain Awesome
That's not the main reason for it. It's just to help put his name into people's heads and mouths. It's nothing new.

Blomkamp has the makings of being a real trend-setter in the film industry and I hope he gets his chance with this movie.
  • gram
there is a reason why he was rejected.
  • Captain Awesome
    Who was rejected?
  • gram
I'm glad you're all in such support of the auteur theory but I seriously doubt if some PR person came up with the idea of putting this nobody's name on the opster in massive letters. This guy is M. Night Shamalan waithing to happen. I just hope this movie tanks so we never have to see NEILL BLOMKAMP's The Happening.
  • edward
Jackson did it with heavenly creatures.
I dunno why you're dwelling in such negativity, district 9 is going to be an important film.

or as capt. awesome put it: 'trend-setting'. just watch.
  • Captain Awesome
"This guy is M. Night Shamalan waithing to happen."

How much was that crystal ball?
  • or... just maybe... he made the movie and would like to have his name on the fuckin' poster regardless of who knows him or not.
  • Chris
It is in his contract that his name will appear on the poster like it does.

It is no big deal. As you say after investing so much time and effort into a big production like this, I say the least he deserves is his name on it!!!!

  • RosanatorDA
im amazed at how much you judge people based on font size.
  • IK!
How about it's HIS movie. I'd certainly want my name on the poster for MY fucking movie.

    It's common sense, man.
  • Really looking forward to this - but the way this summer is going I'm not getting my hopes up. Awesome poster though and I love the ad campaigns they are running.
  • GreatBigLion
Saw the uncensored trailer before Year One, and it's a million times more amazing on-screen.
  • Chris
This film looks good. Hope to see a preview of it soon.

  • Captain Awesome
    Sleeper hit of the year.
  • Well, Rated R? That doesn't smell to well to selling this film. Hmm... curious.
  • mcgruff
luckily the movie was very cheap for a seemingly largescale scifi pic. so hopefully itll still be very profitable. when was the last good scifi alien-related movie?
  • FEAR7
Great concept for a film, i just hope the movie is as good as it looks. Can't wait to see.
  • Mack41
I can't wait for this but does anyone else think "blumkin" instead of blomkamp?
  • Travis McGee
    That reminds me of ID4.
  • SnarkSmarm
... which reminded me of "V".
  • donopago
I think so too kind of.
I'd love to hang it on my wall because it looks like one of those cool old-school Sci-Fi posters.
  • zak
THink the new trailer was just shown on Discovery. Also a new trailer i have never seen is on the www.d-9.com website

Just got an email from sony that the new MNU Alert Game, looks like an app for the iPhone, but its for the main site. Its really cool.
  • Sharpie
I dont know it just reminds me of Independence Day for some reason
  • This is the fourth movie this year I actually really want to spend money on.
  • theONE
I don't get the hype/fuss about this movie. Its been done with Alien Nation, and
using the aliens as a metaphor for Blacks oppression in South Africa or whatever
is kinda stale/dated. In this day & age you can just make a movie about THAT..no need to mask them as Aliens to get people to go see it. If its about Aliens then make it about that. I don't buy into the concept that we would first allow an Alien race that is capable of interstellar travel to be living in Slums somewhere, it just doesn't read as even possible given those circumstances. Not buying into this. Wont be seeing it.
  • spoing
There's a big difference between this movie and Alien Nation. Even though there are superficial similarities. This movie has so much more. It's a satire, it's a thriller, it's a sci-fi shoot-em-up, it's a commentary on the ironies of life in post-apartheid south africa. You should see it.
  • TheMarquis
I'm really curious as to how they keep that giant space ship in place with just those helicopters. I'm sure it will be explained, but if they can subdue it, it seems as if they could destroy it, and if they couldn't, then it wouldn't just sit there. That fact alone will get me in the theater.
