gi_joe_cobra_commander

…well, he’s almost in motion, anyway. This Japanese trailer for Paramount’s upcoming G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra doesn’t show a lot of new footage, though what we do see is cut in a hyper-kinetic fashion that does the footage more service than the last domestic trailer. But the highlight here is one brief glimpse at Cobra Commander (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), as he’s standing next to Destro (Christopher Eccleston). Watch the clip after the break.

I’m posting this primarily because Gordon-Levitt is the one thing that is still holding my interest in this movie. I don’t care about GI Joe as a toy line, a cartoon adaptation or (shudder) a mythology, but I do want to see JGL taking advantage of the opportunity to chew some scenery into little bits. And while the movie sounds like a ridiculous piece of work (even setting aside the whole firing rumor) I love the way that Paramount is keeping JGL’s doctor/Cobra Commander character almost totally under wraps to whatever degree is possible. The studio is playing Destro as the real villain of the film, and he may well be the prime mover to a certain extent, but it’s rare with a tentpole like this that a major character is kept out of the advertising to such a great degree.

Beyond that, yeah, this is a lot of quickly cut shots of people jumping, things blowing up and Sienna Miller’s catsuit cleavage. One of those three things is pretty fantastic; you can choose which one.

    Looks like fun rubbish.
  • It is amazing how shitty this looks.
  • arthera09
I am glad you pulled out the screenshot because I missed it the first time I watched it. I completely agree with Fischer though because JGL is one of my favorite actors and his interviews give me a little bit of hope for the movie. Not a lot of hope just a little bit.
  • the subtitle in the pic says ‘私の名がー’, or 'my name is-', but no one said that during the trailer...
  • TokyoSteve
It's not a literal translation, but with the rest of the sentence... 世界に刻まれるthe english is being translated from "When I'm finished, this world will never forget" to "My name will be carved into the world."
  • Danisgod6491
This is just looking worse and worse as the days go by. But Retards like the High School Crowd are going to eat this up, just like Transformers.
  • i forgot all about this movie. but i guess there was no reason not to.
  • Preston Meyers
Come on...it doesn't look THAT bad. If Transformers 2 can make a bajillion dollars, can't we throw a couple bucks toward this?
  • dagreenman18
will probably be better than Transformers 2.
  • Will
The subtitles make the movie look crazier! They actually look cooler than the "acceleration suits". They should release the movie with Japanese subtitles here in the U.S. to amp up the excitement. Size 72 font. Cover up most of the movie.

It would be a more interesting film this way.

I have knocked this movie as much as everyone has. But I must admit that "The Doctor" HERE looks well done.. Destro I also like and SS looks looks good too.. The Baroness eghh nothing special.. SE very good... Duke ok... Other then that i'm excited a little bit, but STILL am not expecting to see anything thats going to be right...
  • meisterburger
    I missed the cleavage. Q.Q
  • Sketch
It doesn't even seem like the "Doctor" and Destro are even in the same shot. It looks badly composed. But if it's real then I need a new monitor.
  • Captain Awesome
haha, that looks like utter shit.
  • Gajonka
OH GEEZE, CAPTAIN AWESOME STRIKES AGAIN... THOUGH YOU RETIRED?
  • rnl
    everything looks better with japanese.
  • xfloormattx
Why does the headline say he's in motion? Did I miss a frame where his chest heaves from inhaling? Because I just saw a grungy JGL with a mask on standing there listening to a metal-mask-less Destro.
  • Chris
I bet this film is not half as bad as that robot film!

Think this will be bad and will lack any real or interesting storytelling, but look, this film is not made for me it is made for young kids...

it is made to sell toys...

it is made to make a stack load of cash...

it will do all the above and no doubt spawn a sequel.
  • Anrkist
News flash Chris... all those TV Shows when we were kids? Made to sell toys. We bought into it and so will kids today. I'm pretty impressed by Transformers haul even though I have no interest in it. They created the perfect marketing machine... I respect that given I work for a marketing agency. That said, it did not work on me... but I wasn't the target audience either. Neither are the critics who trashed it.

    Forgot one point --

This film has more appeal within the states than it does in the rest of the world. I think had the production included the ACTION MAN character, who is more well known around the world, the film would have more appeal to foreign terratories.

This was the plan a few years back, but that project was scrapped in favor of this cheap and cheerful approach.

Looks cheesy as hell but I'll see it. I know Transformers 2 will be way better but I am a fan of G.I. Joe. Probably won't see it opening day though.
  • Muffin7
Is that the actor from "A Bittersweet Life"? I loved that guy! And the movie wasn't so bad either ;-)
  • This movie looks terrible. Not only as a GI Joe property as a film in general. Gawd Awful.
  • Christopolis
I thought that was a character named Doctor Lewis. Where are we told that this is Cobra Commander? I hope they are one in the same because pics I've seen of CC look a little ridiculous. Hmm, the word ridiculous has lost some weight in the context of this movie. But still I hope.
  • adE
so you posted a "new" trailer for this pile of shit, for a split second of Joseph Gordon-Levitt. yeah........really worth the time
  • Heliopolis
What an unbelievably crap-looking film. Like some Neo-Con's wet dream of US foreign policy!!!
  • Gajonka
Russ - you've lolst all stock in my book if Levitt is the only aspect of this film keeping your interest? Do you have wild turkey in that coffee mug you hide behind?

Go see Levitt in Killshot and tell me how great he is then. Leviit better not screw this movie up!! That's the perspective all intelligent minds are taking.

No worries, your new here... and you have had good posts before.

I am afraid to say that I hit the floor after reading what you wrote about Levitt... who has demonstrated incredible talent in stop-loss, but still has a long way to dig after Kill shot. I hope for the sake of the reasons why we live, that he can deliver one of the greatest villians ever without incident and error.

    Respectfully-

THATS NOT COBRA COMMANDER - THATS "THE DOCTOR"... OH MAN, CMON GET IT STRAIGHT.

SINCE THEY 86'D DR. MINDBENDER, THEY DECIDED TO USE THE DOCTOR AS WHAT COBRA COMMANDER WAS BEFORE HE BECAME COBRA COMMANDER.

HE WAS A SCIENTIST, AND WHEN AN EXPERIMENT GOES WRONG, HE GETS MORPHED , FORMS 12 EYES, ETC... , OR AT LEAST THATS HOW IT SHOULD GO.

BUT THATS NOT COBRA COMMANDER. ITS THE DOCTOR...

    NEXT!!!!!

TO COUNTER-POINT YOUR UTTER DISRESPECT FOR GI JOE - YOU CANT HAVE IT BOTH WAYS. GI JOE REPRESENTS ONE OF THE GREATEST COLLECTIONS OF CHARACTERS - EVER. THE LINEUPS ON BOTH THE GOOD AND THE BAD SIDES ARE DEEP WITH INNOVATIVE, UNIQUE, AND EXCITING CHARACTERS.

NOT SURE IF THE DREADNOCKS ARE IN THIS, BUT WE ARE ONLY SEEING A SPLICE OF WHAT GI JOE REPRESENTS.

YOU SAY THAT YOU CANT WAIT TO SEE LEVITT AS CC. WELL, CC IS PROBABALY ONE OF THE BEST OF THESE CHARACTERS. I HOPE HE DOES A GOOD JOB AS WELL.

YOU NEEDS TRO HAVE A LITTLE MORE RESPECT FOR THE CHARACTERS AND IMAGINATION TAKEN TO INVENT THEM.

AND DONT TELL ME YOU DIDNT WATCH CARTOONS WHEN YOU WERE GROWING UP. WHAT DID YOU WATCH? SOUNDS TO ME LIKE YOU WERE A THUNDERCATS SOFTEE, OR A VOLTRON GEEK - HMMM.. MAYBE HEATHCLIFF.

I DONT KNOW - YOU TELL ME.

    ROCK N ROLL.
  • Because I don't know which of his/her massively inane comments to respond to, I will use this separate post to reiterate a point that I made earlier that applies to Gajonka in this thread: I miss the vote down button.

what's next a Metal Gear Solid movie? oh well i'd like to see that, hmm if i mention it, i'm pretty sure some director is already thinking about that lol. well this and that is not related

I'm just curious as to why people keep excusing this film by saying "it's based off a cartoon designed to sell toys." Does that mean it's okay to not take the subject matter seriously?

The new Batman franchise, Watchmen and Spider-Man are all based off comic books. Harry Potter and Twilight are based off young adult books...so let's not take them seriously, right? No. At it's heart, G.I. JOE is a para-military special ops team. Just because the source material is a toy and a comic book doesn't mean that it should not be treated seriously. Actually, that should be considered a challenge to the screenwriter(s). This is not a unique challenge because it's already been met by film makers with more vision.

G.I. JOE may not be as bad as originally feared, but still, it is not G.I. JOE as the true fans know it. It is an ideological mash-up of X-Men, Batman, Iron Man and NATO when it should have just been G.I. JOE.

Some people have argued that Bay's Transformers isn't a direct offspring of its source material, and that Heath Ledger's joker didn't look like the comic book version, either. And those arguments are correct. But the difference between the two approaches is that one film maker took his source material seriously, whereas the other did not.

And that is the biggest failure of this movie. It's not made to sell toys, because kids aren't buying toys anymore, they're buying tech. Movies like these are (supposed to be) made for the nostalgic escapism of those old enough to remember the actual toys. That's why the Spider-Man and Transformer franchises have raked in so much cash; not because they were good, but because people wanted so see the characters they imagined come to life.

Instead, true Spider-Man fans were treated to a soap-opera, TF fans were treated to Shia LeBouf and robot testicles, and G.I. JOE fans will be treated to a Star War rip-off where everyone is somehow related or connected to some one else in the story.

As far as box-office receipts are concerned, I predict a windfall. But true fans--who this movie is supposed to be for--will be let down. How do I know? Cobra Commander.

New to this site but since were on the topic of G.I. Joe, i was somewhat disappointed. for starters tatum channing cant act, where were all the original characters. i would rather watch the cartoon G.I. Joe The Movie every day for the rest of my life than watch this garbage......but if they make another one I will watch it. but master mold i liked what you had too say. if there gonna make a full length movie of something i loved when i was a child they could at least stick with the same idea and mold than there garbage ideas.
  • mastermold
Yep. Even three months later, it still kind of hurts.
