George Clooney as Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan?

jack_ryan_actors

This is what I get for skimming. First thing this morning I looked over the first page of Kim Masters’ story at The Daily Beast about George Clooney’s production company moving to Sony, but I didn’t read the whole thing. And Anne Thompson noticed, on the second page, an assertion that Clooney is interested in helping Paramount revive the Jack Ryan character seen in The Hunt For Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears. This is just the latest Ryan revival rumor to hit the web in the last couple years, but I’ll admit: it’s one of the better ones.

Specifically, Masters writes this: “A source says he expressed interest in playing Jack Ryan when and if Paramount attempts to revive the Tom Clancy series.” OK, so that’s not much. It’s very thin. But Clooney has the gravitas, the vulnerability and the muscle to play Ryan in any of his incarnations, whether true to the novels or three different film portrayals.

Three actors have played Ryan so far: Alec Baldwin (Red October); Harrison Ford (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger); and Ben Affleck (Sum of All Fears). Though Patriot Games is a solid action movie, Baldwin’s version remains my favorite. He’s closest to the source, too. On paper the character has had severe back problems, which cut short his military career, and is a financially savvy analyst and historian. In short, he’s more of an egghead in the novels than on screen, where he became more of an action star over the course of four movies.

Last year, reports surfaced that Ryan Gosling might topline a revival of the character for Paramount, and Sam Raimi was in negotiations to direct the new film and a possible string of sequels. (There was also a rumor that James Franco was being eyed as a possible Ryan.) Given his involvement with Spider-Man 4 at this point, a Raimi Jack Ryan film isn’t going to happen any time soon. Whenever Paramount gets someone to push the movie forward, it will be the second ‘official’ reboot of the character, as Ben Affleck’s outing was reboot number one.

So: discuss. Is George Clooney the man to fill Jack Ryan’s shoes, or did he get his shot long ago in The Peacemaker? (Not a Jack Ryan story, but close enough.)

  • Alec Baldwin will always be Jack Ryan to me.
  • jason B
me too, but i feel the names we've heard have been pretty solid. never replacing, but filling the void.
  • Chad
I'd rather see George Clooney as Sam Fisher, to be honest. I have no idea if he could pull it off.
  • Octoberist
Yeah, I would rather see Tom Clancy's other properties being worked on. Jack Ryan had his chance..several times already.
  • Gelman
If Clooney does get the role, they should get Chris O'Donnell to play his sidekick.

Seriously though, I think the Jack Ryan character is a serious character whereas Clooney is better suited for comedic roles.
  • Eric R.
I don't know, I think Clooney showed some chops in Micheal Clayton. I believe he can do a decent Jack Ryan, though I will agree with the other bloggers that Baldwin was my favorite.
  • agreed...He's SO much better @ being Smarmy & Silly...Or over-the-TOP

Seldom, he doesn't do weLL in Serious Roles...but admittedly, he was @ the top o' his game in Three Kings & Michael Clayton...Also, the one where he directed Straithairn...The Black & White flick...

So maybe...NO To Sam Fisher...Just Play Ryan as an Egghead...with Some Pseudo~Action Sequences...

PuhLease, No Jason Bourne's Older Uncle//Grandpa doing something akin to James Bond of Sean Connery caliber by the time he was on his fourth flick...Please don't...Just have a Smart Guy in Strenuous Situations...

It'll be fun to see him Get out of those situations using his wits...

& Ingenuity, rather than BrutaLity...Or Just plain Force...

the way these types of films are currently being approached, i believe with clooney, gossling or maybe even a no-name: this film is a guaranteed success. as long as the director is badass, i honestly feel a new face could even pull it off.

more than likely they will 'bourne' it up, so i think its an optimistic situation.
  • JB
Next he'll move to Universal and play an older Jason Bourne.
Next to Fox and play Jack Bauer.
But I would love if he moves to Fox and plays Stan in "American Dad!"
  • Chris
He would be good in the role, sadly I believe this is more to do with producing over starring.

I could definitely see this working, especially if done with a Micheal Clayton, Syriana realism tone, I'd really look forward to it.
  • Linda
    Too old..Should go younger
  • Chris
I think thats what the studio intends to do... or at least intended about a year ago.

At the time there was some talk about castings etc...

I think the young version would work, but all too often we see young kids take on the responsibilities of these shows and fail. I would love to see a more serious CLAYTON style film as someone else mentioned.

ford will always be jack ryan, not baldwin. but clooney could be very awesome in this role. totally works. totally revitalizes the franchise. good call.
  • Maybe he could play John Clark a la "Without Remorse." I've always wanted that one translated to the screen.
  • Peter D
I want Rainbow 6 movie, not another movie about Jack Ryan.
  • simon
yes that would be ace, as long as its an adaptation of the book, not the video games

Clooney would be good as sam fisher, but i don't know how interested he would be imn playing a character from a video game (i always wanted to see clooney as gordon freeman in a half life movie)
  • vadmspartan
Could definitely work if they go for more of an older character like Ford's portrayal. I think it would be stretching for him to be on field operations.
  • Colonel_Kurtz
Jack Ryan is not a field operative. He's an analyst.
  • discus
He'd be old to start headlining a franchise (even though I know Ford was the same age when he took over the role). An older action hero does appeal to me, but I worry about how many films can be made before credibility stretches too far.

There are some younger action stars-in-training whom I'd be interested in seeing breathe some life into this franchise.

I'm sorry. But If I think George Clooney in a sequel where he replaces another actor in a existing character, Batman and Robin always comes to mind. I'll pass.
    Holy batnipples, Batman!
  • I always liked Harrison Ford as Ryan. But why not John Kelly/Clark in Without Remorse?
  • That sounds oddly familiar.
  • Colonel_Kurtz
The Hunt is one of my favorite all-time movies...top 20 according to flickchart. I've watched it more times than the other 3 combined...granted, I only watched Sum of All Fears once. If George Clooney wants to bring Jack Ryan more in line with the character in the novels where he's more catalyst than commando, then I'm all for this.
  • As a lover of The Peacemaker, and a fan of the Jack Ryan from the books, I think that Clooney could do a decent job. He's not as bookish as he should be, as Baldwin was when he played Ryan in Red October, but I think he could make up for it with the Clooney quirks we've come to expect of him.
