bladeprequel

And here I thought the Blade franchise was dead in the water after Blade Trinity’s abysmal failure. Stephen Dorff, who played the villain Deacon Frost in the first film, mentioned to the Sunday Mail last year that a prequel trilogy spearheaded by Blade director Stephen Norrington was in the works:

It will be a prequel to the Blade movies, Deacon’s story. It’s a new trilogy the director has created. It will be cool. We hope to shoot the first film next year. Frost is a character I have never been able to shake.

Without further confirmation from Norrington, we’ve pretty much treated the news as rumor, but today he admitted to Comics2Film that a prequel film is indeed in the works (as soon as he finishes his Crow reboot). Norrington mentions that the project isn’t exactly like Dorff described, but it’s close. He goes on to say that it “has evolved into a very interesting story,” and that “the linkage to Blade is still big in the equation.”

Norrington has had it tough since the first Blade in 1998. He went on to direct The League of Extraordinary Gentleman, an experience that turned him off of the movie making business for several years. His remake of The Crow will be his first project since 2003. Dorff has appeared in various roles since Blade, but nothing has been as successful with mainstream viewers.

While this project is in such early stages that it could probably fall apart at any moment, it’s an interesting prospect. Norrington managed to turn what could have been a throwaway comic adaptation into a memorable action film that also helped jump start the comic book film frenzy.  I’m not the only fan that came away soured by Blade Trinity, and this sounds like a good chance to reboot the franchise. I don’t suspect we’ll see much of Wesley Snipes, though given Blade’s connection to Frost I wouldn’t be if we see the character in child or teenage form.

Discuss: Do you care at all about more entries in the Blade franchise? Is Deacon Frost interesting enough to have his own prequel trilogy?

    freaking awesome!!!!

I actually wouldn't mind this. Frost was probably my favorite character out of all the Blade movies and since i didn't really like the Blade movies anyway there's nothing to ruin.
  • I don't think anyone in the world will really care if a Blade prequel gets made or not.
  • Bruno
I certainly do care, and I'm not the only one.
  • Jay
its crazy how back a director Goya is, I just saw unborn and wow what a turd. Hope this one turns out better than Blade 3
  • Solid
Why a prequel? Why not ressurect Frost in Blade 4? And finally FINALLY some recognition of Blade's part in the rebirth of the comicbook movie genre. I was totally knocked flat by that movie when I saw it at my cousin's house years ago. Good times. fx got shitty at the end, but they just don't make movies like that anymore. So much creativity and depth to something that was originally so cheesy. Blade did it long before Nolan but people keep sweeping that FACT under the rug because they want to ignore the truth. Anything Blade, bring it on Hollywood. Love the character.

Same here, I prefer to see a direct sequel with Wesley Snipes back instead of a prequel/reboot. And yes, they can bring back Deacon Frost and all the other things that made the first Blade movie great.

your right Blade always had a dark tone way before Nolan Batman and no one mention that. this prequel is an EPIC FAIL we need a freaking sequel Blade 4
  • JohnnyRottenGirl
I agree with everything you just said!! :)
  • Didn'tknowaboutDeaconFrost
Deacon freakin' Frost! Who cares about that chap? Just do a classic Blade story and don't try to build onto the existing continuity. Reboot it and try your best to fudge it in with the rest of the marvel movies, please.
  • Deacon Frost
Deacon frost made the movie good so i dunno wtf ur talking about u obviously dont know shit about how a movie works if ur saying screw him he was the only good actor and storyline in all 3 movies if they make a classic like u said just gunna be another shitty blade movie after trinity

    Deacon Frost/Nixon

    shit-tastic!
  • topheavy
Trinity was catastrophic, but I think the 'League' guy deserves another shot.. Give us something good to watch punk.

    Don't be so harsh, man.
A lot of people likes Frost... I do!
  • Johnny Boy
Franchises in Hollywood NEVER become dead. They go into comas, but never die... they come out with crappy sequels and go into comas, but later come out (or continue in the coma) with a prequel, another sequel, or rebooted.

When I re-watched Blade a few years ago the one thing that did jump out at me was Frost. Definitely a cool villian and a interesting portrayal by Dorff.
  • Krazy Joe
I'd prefer a Blade 4 picking up where Blade: The Series left off
  • Blade Trinity didn't do that terrible, it made money... http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=blade3.htm But OTOH this reboot sounds like a good idea, hopefully it doesn't turn into a PG13 shaky cam mess.

I am one of those people that didn't hate Blade Trinity. The origin story of Deacon Frost would be good to delve into.

    Wait and see.
  • Von
Hell no! The story is about Blade and only Blade. that is why the last movie failed. They brought in other people and tried to make them badasses. Bringing in good looking white actors is not going to make it a good mainstream movie. Their fight scenes looked like crap. Blade is the only badass. Stick with that formula and the movie will be good.
  • Sleven
I dont care about seeing a decon frost picture, I would prefer a complete reboot of the blade franchise starring blade of course
  • Maybe they can bring back Frost as a tax consultant, and make Blade 4 more possible.
  • NZA36
blade = snipes + del toro. i could care less about this prequel
  • AdventCiervo
I doubt the studio would have much faith in Snipes coming back for another sequel. A friend of mine works for the company that did the special effects for Blade Trinity and said that Wesley Snipes couldn't have been a bigger asshole. This was also confirmed by Goyer in interviews that Snipes was a prick cause he was upset that Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel were getting as much screen time as him. Plus he cheated on his taxes and you cant come back from that...
  • Bobby
Yes finally the infamous "a friend of mine who works for the studio" comment. That's as believable as the " my uncle works for so and so" comment. Anyways Wesley Snips had a valid reason for being a prick. People liked the 1st 2 Blades because they were original 1st of all and a new take on vampires despite the fact that most didn't even know Blade was a comic character at 1st. 2nd they were centered on Blade and even in 2 where their was more of a team focus at least the villains were interesting and the vampires helping Blade were interesting. In 3 they could have done so much with Dracula but Ryan Reynolds seemed more like comic relief and Jessica Biel wasn't a very interesting character. Also many people who have "cheated" on their taxes have come back. Wesley Snips has still been playing in a lot of movies. Granted their direct to DVD but that's only because his recent legal troubles with taxes but he's been an advocate of not paying taxes for what a decade and it just caught up with him in like 2005.

Anyways Deacon Frost however interesting he may have been definately won't sell out a movie. If Blade isn't a major character then don't call it Blade because people are going to want to see Blade. They can't call it Frost because as I said he isn't even a known character so that alone won't sell the movie. New Line wouldn't be stupid enough to green light a Blade movie and not have Wesley Snipes. Just do a Blade 4 or reboot it with a new actor to play Blade. Maybe Omar Epps or something.
  • @AdventCiervo: "Plus he cheated on his taxes and you cant come back from that..." Oh, I dunno...Willie Nelson's done pretty good since going broke-ass due to tax issues. Also, sure...let's say you're the name on the marquee for the first two movies and now two more people are pulling equal screen time in YOUR franchise. "Stars" aren't known for having altruistic approaches to their work-the ego is the monkey that needs to be fed, and at the time, Ryan Reynolds was pissing in his ego flavored cheerios. There ya have it.

    FUCK this prequel

did the prequel work for Wolverine fuck no

to be honest we dont need a story based on Deacon Frost we need Blade 4 and bring back Wesley Snipes to kick some vampire ass
  • getoverit
    No Snipes, no interest.
  • Above all else, this just stinks of New Line trying to hold on to their Blade franchise any way that they can so Marvel doesn't take it back and make a Nightstalkers movie with paramount.
  • sparky516
This makes no sense... A BLADE movie about someone who isn't BLADE. Deacon Frost wasn't anything special until he became the blood god. Why would they make a prequel about him? This is going to be an epic fail movie that I have to see just to laugh at. I agree with the idea of a fourth with a resurrection of Deacon.... and not one that follows the series because the tv show was a f*ckin joke. Blade is not the same without snipes. He's just a BA. If they do have a resurrection though, they better do a damn good job thinking of how they are going to reanimate him because he splattered everywhere in the end.
  • JohnnyRottenGirl
    yess! they musstt do thiss!!
  • Christopher Herron
Someone said Epic Fail? End your subscription to WOW right now.

Honestly, If those involved are willing to go against Hollywood's dying agenda on movie making creates a Deacon Frost that isn't Twilightish or overtly villainous, yet still villainous (?), then this could work magnificently.

To me Deacon is the epitome of a Half Breed Vampire who has falling victim to Hollywood's idea of what a Vampire should be (I haven't read any Blade comics and don't intend to, this is just from watching the character via Blade).

FROST QUOTES: "...For fucks sake, these people are our food, not our allies." or "...Have the good grace to die with some fucking dignity" love that. What dominion of Hell speaks of grace? Lol. Nice.

Build off of this and he can be a stand alone, but with proper direction (If Deacon hasn't been able to leave Stephen Norrington mind I can't wait to see what he has in store for us), writing (James V. Hart laugh if you like his stories are brilliant!) and crucial casting (John Papsidera Again Thank You). Marvel spend the damn cash... Mr. Stephen Norrington get out of your comfort zone take a risk. I love Deac, but he "is" just a supporting character of Blades undying quest.

Almost like making a Joker flick with no Batman. Jesus these two NEED each other. Period.

The only difference is I think it can work with or without mo-hawked Snipes. Just needs the proper character and story development. We want to know this guy he intrigued many of us. Otherwise, I agree with the consensus... it'll be crap and destroy a mystical character that could be the ultimate in "Blood Godliness!" and a worthy enemy of Blades'.

    BTW Blade Trinity sucked arse...
