Indiana Jones

Is development on a fifth Indiana Jones film further along than we think? CBS’s The Insider claims that Harrison Ford is set to return as Indy for another adventure, which won’t “start until next year, and it will not be released before 2011, when the star will be 69.”

Lets keep in mind, The Insider isn’t exactly the best source for information. They’re one of those gossipy television show like Entertainment Tonight. Their Internet website cites unnamed sources for the information. And aside from the tentative shoot and release dates, what does the source say?

“Harrison has kept himself in good shape and could still do a lot of the stunts in the last film.”

Back in mid June, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull star Shia LaBeouf told the BBC that Steven Spielberg had “cracked a story on [Indiana Jones 5] before I left and I think they’re gearing that up.” So, who knows? It is possible. I’ll believe it when its officially announced. Lets just hope that Spielberg keeps Lucas away from the story meetings this time around.

  • While I don't think any more Indiana jones is needed for this earth. Let me get in before all the zombies come rabid. Crystal skull, no matter how many people say it was bad, will never be as bad as temple of doom was.
  • Temple of Doom has weaknesses that Crystal Skull does not - for sure - but, the weaknesses in Crystal Skull are a desecration and trampling of the very formula that makes Indy Indy. Even Steven Seagal movies know to stick to a formula - such as making your hero actually heroic and interesting. Indiana Jones drove a truck for 90% of the primary action set piece, and he walked into the final room without any effort. There was almost no dynamic tension or real mystery in the fourth film, and primary artifacts were picked up without any effort by walking into a set and picking up the plastic skull after hitting a couple random strangers with a shovel. Spielberg and Co. also know the basic writing rules like "don't use the same key to get your protagonists out of every situation" - but lo and behold, the crystal skull was a shortcut to every tight spot towards the end of the film. Spielberg and Co. should also know better than to CG animate a tree that is slapping Russians off a waterfall. The movie was silly almost beyond belief... by the time the temple turned into a UFO I felt sick to my stomach. At least the Temple of Doom felt like a real Indiana Jones story.
  • Maybe you think temple of doom felt like a real Indiana jones story, but the only real thing that helped it feel anything like one was that it was made in the same time as the other movies, something that crystal skull couldn't. Just about everything you said can be said about temple of doom, just switch out the truck for a mining car. Not to mention the movie had some of the most unintimidating villians, some of the worst side characters ever in an Indy movie (see helpless blonde woman that never serves a purpose to the story outside of bitching and needing saved ever second) and the constat abominations like the beginning of the movie that came in like Indiana jones the musical. And if you think a space ship coming from the temple or anything else in crystal skull was unbelieveable then you really haven't seen the other Indiana jones movies? Boy in raiders, when they cracked open the arc and thosands of ghosts came out swirling around in a big circle melting peoples faces it just made me sick, SO unrealistic. Or when a crusader was alive for thousands of years protecting the holy grail in a cave was soo idiotic, Such an unrealistic thing. How could an Indiana jones movie pull something SO unrealistic as having aliens in a temple. Or worse. Russians being slapped over waterfalls?anyone who came out of crystal skull could only hate it worse than temple if they couldn't get past the fact this was 2008, it's not going to have the exact same feel or quite the same look, it's impossible over such a long time gap. Or they didn't want a new jones in the first place and thought they should complain about things that have been in every jones movie, but somehow this time, this jones, it's a terrible 'mess'. And last, jones is older. Wether you like it or not, jones is a human who will one day die, and he's not the young indy everyone loved. Seeing an old man flying around like his younger version wouldn't feel any more right then anything else. So alright, go on thinking it was vastly different from the formulas as other jones movies, but it wasn't as different as you think. Not quite as good as raiders and last crusade, miles above temple of doom.
  • StoolSniffer
Crusade was boring - Temple of doom was so much better it's not even funny. Opening sequence = brilliant homage to the 30's (which was missed on you), mine car chase = breath-taking (see it in a theater, not on your mom's crappy TV), and the Dame-in-distress is supposed to be annoying (see 'homage to the era' above). Awesome that Speilberg and Lucas took Indy down a darker, and more intense road. Crusade and Skull were boring attempts at rekindling Raider's charm. Skull's premise had the possibility of kicking ass - I think the Alien angle could've worked - but something got way F'd up sometime after the chase through Marshall College.
  • the "brilliant" opening being an homage to the 30's was not lost on me. it was also anything but brilliant. i can't help if you consider something as dull as the mine car chase breath-taking either, you need to get out more. i can't help you if you find the worst in a series to be the masterpiece. i'll blame it on bad taste.
  • CyT
Basically Raiders and Crusade had the best of everything. One was funnier than the other, one was grittier. Then in between them we have the spin offs with different style. This can only mean that the next one is going to go back to the roots of Raiders and Crusade but not be gritty or comedic. Darker seems to be the in thing now so maybe thats what it will be? Maybe Shia will die leaving Indy feeling helpless or something, then everyone can be safely assured of no more films without Harrison on board!
  • Fatherbradley
YES SNOOL SNIFFER! When Doom came out - it was total uptick in the suspense/danger levels from Raiders. Yeah now - looking back it's easy to say ho-hum to the mine car chase, the bugs, the traps, Mola Ram ripping the dude's heart out, the nightclub fight after Indy chugs poison, etc etc etc. But anyone who understands the Genre - sees it as fantastic prequel to Raiders - besides being a blockbuster back in '84, it received multiple oscar noms, won for FX, and has maintained positive reviews since it came out. (let's see Skull do that.. oh wait it didn't). The only people who despise/hate Doom, never even saw it when it came out - and have nowhere near the love/understanding of the character of Indiana Jones. I'll take gritty, edge of your seat filmmaking over CG groundhogs and gay Monkeys anyday.

I know I'm alone but I liked kingdom of a crystal skull and still hate Shia lebeoueoeuof
  • CyT
I like Shia in Disturbia and Trasnformers, but he killed his rep with this movie, and Transformers 2 didnt keep him up either. Im just hoping in 10 years time he comes back with good stuff. If you take Tom Hanks as his comparisson, which people seem to, then he is still on track.

But your not alone. I really like Crystal Skull. Its my least favourite of the 4 but its still a fun movie to watch.
  • Starstream
Well it could be decent, the premise for Crystal Skull wasn't bad it was just poorly executed.

People bitch about aliens ignoring the fact Indy in the films, games, comics has tangled with powers from Christian & Hindu religions, also faced off with Atlantian & Babylonian gods not to mention zombies and all other weird occult stuff.

The idea of aliens is no more preposterous than any of the others, they just need to be paying more attention and bring their A game to the movie.
  • Joe
Every entertainment news website that gets a scoop cites "unnamed sources".
  • Yeah, but gossip sites, newspapers and shows tend to have less reliable sources, or so it seems.
  • Justin
    Blaming Lucas? Really?
  • Plan 9
I'm with you. While I think Temple of Doom is still the low point of the series, Crystal Skull was closer to Short Round 2, than it was bringing back Belloq. But how much of that is George? Honestly, it's been a long, long while since I was able to trust anything that came out of Kathleen Kennedy, Speilberg, Lucas or Ford. No shining track records here.
  • I enjoy Short Round compared to any of the low points of Crystal Skull
  • CyT
How can you not think it was Lucas? Have you read anything about what Lucas wanted this movie to be, before Spielberg got involved? It was going to be a lot more craphouse.
  • Justin
I've read everything there is to read about Crystal Skull, don't worry. If you didn't like the flick, that's fine. But the blame would extend to more than George Lucas, in that scenario. He helped with the story and got a producer credit. He did not direct. He was not the credited screenwriter.

People can postulate all they want about how Lucas was the "driving force" behind everything they didn't like about the movie but the truth is, Spielberg is still Spielberg and Harrison is still Harrison -- neither would nor COULD be strong-armed into making a film they didn't want to make. It's not like either was forced to perform at gunpoint for us, by Lucas.

I know it might be difficult to be objective with George Lucas because it's 2009, this is the Internet, and we're commenting on a film blog but look at it from an honest perspective and realize that it was more than one person's film (regardless of whether that one man is Steven, Harrison, George, Shia, etc.)
  • CyT
Agreed. But after reading the Complete Makings Of... it really does seem like Lucas is a full on kinda guy. He has thought of everything and knows everything he wants (obviously as he is so successful) so you cant discount the fact he would be very influential in most of the decisions, especially in pre-production.

According to that book he wanted it to be much more full on Aliens and in bad B class low budget style with flying saucers and "saucermen" everywhere. Speilberg didnt think that would work and neither did Harrison, so all three parties colated their ideas to what we have today. I grant that Spielberg and Ford are as influential and had more creative control over what was made, but I really do get the impression of Darth Lucas sitting behind his desk on a chair raised 20cm higher than the rest of the chairs putting a stamp of approval or denial on the shots he sees and the ideas floating around.

BTW ... I actually like Indy 4 and would love them to make Indy 5. But after what Lucas wrote for Star war 1,2,3 and what his ideas were for Indy 4, I would prefer he stay well away on Indy 5.
  • Nick
I liked Indy IV, though it had some serious screenplay flaws, and if there's anyone that should be blamed for them, it's not Lucas, it's David Koepp. They need only one thing to make Indy 5 good: a decent script.
  • Ender
I'd normally agree with you, but Lucas was the driving force behind what was IN the script. I think Koepp is fairly absolved of blame on this one.
  • Chris
This aint happening. Well, not with ford staring!

    x
  • Maybe Spielberg feels the need to make one more to make up for how disappointing Indy 4 was...it's possible...right?
  • Ryz
And let Spielberg makes the descisions hopefully
  • The Series is over until the third film is done!
  • ALL OX ALL THE TIME
But what about Ox? Will he be back?

It needs to center around THE OX.
  • Solid
No not ox. MAC, ma boy! Briiiing back the Mac! Joooooooooooooooooooooooooooonsssssssssssssssseeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyy!!!
  • CyT
Get rid of both those characters and your going to be on the path back to a good Indy!
  • katt800
    im with you buddy
  • JPX
"Lets just hope that Spielberg keeps Lucas away from the story meetings this time around." Bam! And there it is. Slashfilm just can't help slamming Lucas EVERY TIME there is a post about Indiana Jones. Let me remind you that Lucas INVENTED Indiana Jones so your snarky comments just sound dumb. I loved Indy 4, it perfectly captured the setting of the "atomic age". Indy 4 was no more silly than any of the other Indy films.
  • Lucas also invented Star Wars... but his ideas and concepts are no longer as interesting as they once were. Every single complaint about Crystal Skull can be traced back to an idea that came from Lucas. Ford and Spielberg were against aliens, but eventually gave in....
  • Ted Rossio
Well it was set in the '50s. What did people in those days really care about? That's right, aliens. So in terms of time-setting, it's appropriate. But that was Mayan religion, so maybe they should go back to Catholic or Buddhist religious artifacts?
  • rcesm
Indiana Jones and the CVS Pharmacy Caper...

All he'll is Shia and the rest of the Scooby gang to get his meds on time.
  • I wouldn't mind another round of Indy. I liked Crystal Skull as much as Temple of Doom, so hopefully they'll make something as good as Last Crusade this time. I've completely ruled out another one as good as Raiders. That won't ever happen.
  • justrobby
    needs more monkeys
  • Mx
NOOOOO! What will the premise be? Shi'a Labuef is the next Indy? I hope to god not. If there is one thing we don't need it's that stupid Tarzan shit!
  • Mr. Mang
Indiana Jones + Nazis = an excellent adventure movie.

Indiana Jones + anything else = fail

Fun fact: Indiana Jones racked up a decent Nazi body count in Lost Ark and Last Crusade but failed to shoot a single Commie in Crystal Skull.

Indiana Jones 5 synopsis: Indiana Jones, in a fit of dementia, struggles to find his way from the cafeteria back to his room in his nursing home in the latest film by Steven Spielberg.

Great Indiana Jones moments: When he killed 4 Nazis with 1 bullet and when he inadvertently ran into Adolf Hitler and Adolf signed Indy's father's notebook.

Please don't let this happen: Indiana Jones 5 - Indy finds a time machine and arrives in the year 2011.
  • As long as there's CG groundhogs, I'm there.
  • MikeDeee
The CG Groundhogs/Prairie dogs were ridiculous as were the CG monkeys Shia was swinging with. I mean come on at least in Temple Of Doom there were real bugs and in Last Crusade real rats on top of fake ones made of rubber. I prefer that approach over anything CG. Call me old school but I think a lot of movies have gone over board with CG. I hated Short Round and I hated Mac "Jonesie" was really annoying. Marion and Indy didn't have much chemistry and Mutt as the new Indy??????? They should go back to basics and make another Indy that doesn't include ALIENS!!!! What is up with Lucas and the Aliens come on people. Indy is an Archeologist and should be digging up relics and old world history not dealing with out of this world crap.
  • Gregage
I think that Speilberg has already ruined a good classic series and should move on to destroying the rest of our childhood classics and add a fourth Back To The Future or mabe re-visit the Goonies. Or he could just come over to my house and urinate all over my photos of as a kid.
  • I'm sorry, but when has Speilburg ruined anything other then Indy (and that's debatable). Hook doesn't count. And a Speilburg Back to the Future sounds awesome.

And believe me, I think anyone would urinate all over your photos when you were a kid.
  • Superhog
I'll be in line. Despite the ending, I enjoyed INDY 4, I had a smile on my face the entire time.
  • samboni
    im calling bullsh**
  • Chris
This is not happening. the plan was to restart the INDY franchise with the kid leading the show -- that was up until the recent regime change at Paramount.

Its up in the air. If it does happen, FORD will not star! period!

    x
  • Brian Swierczynski
Ya! I don't like the Storyline very much! It's not bad, but it's not great either! I never thought about that though! I had an idea for a much better script! He already ruined the last one by putting aliens in it! He says it's gonna be the best one! That's what they said about the last one, and it turned out to be the worst! I can't wait to see how he ruins this one!
  • Raemarie
No another round. Harrison still got what it takes.
  • marlinsfan4life
I'm definitely up for another Indiana Jones film.
Back in the mid 90's there was an Indy Story written by Hal Barwood, creator of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis video game in 1992, about the 1950's, and former Nazis trying to use the Philosopher's Stone to resurrect Hitler. It was called Indiana Jones and the Iron Phoenix

This is a great idea, IMO, because 1, Indy's Age fits, 2, you could do a prequel in the mid fifty's, 1954 or 1955, so no married Indy, no Shia, no ox, I liked Mac, so maybe bring back the greedy one.

And, I liked Crystal Skull, it was a solid movie, with Shia and the last 5 Minutes being the real downside of the movie.
