ong-bak-2-tony-jaa

One of the first things that caught my eye this morning was Twitch’s posting of a new French trailer for Ong Bak 2, starring master of knees and elbows Tony Jaa. They’re excited about this one because it shows, briefly, some of the scene where Jaa has a watery encounter with a real, live alligator. Peter has already done a VOTD for today, so I’ll just implore you to watch this trailer, after the jump.

Ong Bak 2, which is unrelated to the first film in any story sense, had a famously difficult road to completion. Tony Jaa directed, against the advice of former director Prachya Pinkaew. But in the middle of the shoot he had a massive breakdown, fled into the forest and stayed there for two months (supposedly practicing black magic) before making a tearful return to civilization on live TV. Then he presented the film’s financier with a list of demands that had to be met if he was to finish the film; after showing up at a police station claiming that he was being followed by thugs (i.e. his financier’s goons) he just went back and finished the movie with the help of his mentor Panna Rittikrai. But from our perspective, if the fight scenes are as impressive as some of these shots suggest, it will perhaps all be worth it. The original film is still jaw-dropping, even with the silly plot and characters.

Luc Besson’s company Europa Corp is distributing the film in Europe, and is making some cuts. (It also took care of the first, and even got a spraypainted shout-out in the film’s tuk-tuk chase sequence, seen dimly here at 5:37. ) About six minutes have reportedly been trimmed, and some changes may have been made to the score as well.

To be honest, I’ve heard mixed things about Ong Bak 2, which premiered in Thailand long ago and is already available via R3 DVD. But the trailers and clips make the fight scenes look amazing, so I’m still ready. Seeing Ong Bak at Midnight Madness during the ‘03 Toronto fest was one of my favorite genre movie experiences, so I’m hoping for a glimmer of that from the sequel.

And if you haven’t seen it, check the great French poster for the film, which shamelessly trades on Bruce Lee’s image.

now THAT is how you use an elephant
  • `^`
don't you tell me how to use an elephant
  • This is going to be insane. I totally forgot that he vanished for that amount of time. That gator scene is out of control. I wonder if anyone died during the filming of this? I can't wait to see it.

    I'm on board.

    All Hail Tony Jaa
  • I saw On Bak 2 at SXSW in March and it was a huge disappointment. It's not a sequel in any way and it tries waaay to hard to balance story with great fights and succeeds in neither. Boo.
  • meh, movie was ok, fights were incredible, but it was probably the most confusing martial arts movie plot ever. i think tony jaa movies don't translate well to western audiences...

Anyone remembers that trailer that was posted a month or two ago with another Muy Thai fighter where in the last scene he was being chased from rooftop to rooftop and he used a really long bamboo pole to poke a guy in midair.Him and Tony Jaa should spar.
  • That's not Jaa with the gator. The scene is from early in the movie with a child actor playing Jaa's character as a boy.

The movie is pretty good, but the fights are absolutely awesome. Luckily they seem to take up almost half of the film's running time.

  • mcgruff
how the Shit did they do that scene with the alligator????
  • Prathik
    I saw the movie already..
and man, the fight scenes are friggin amazing.
  • Sketch
They should just make a Greystoke Tarzan of the Apes with this guy. Just pretend his mother was Thai or something while his father was the British lord. Hell you can prolly redubb this and make it look like a Tarzan film almost.
  • uwe
    look shitty
  • Stefan
was quite disappointed by the film. first was so much better, even preferred Tom Yum Goong
  • joe
i saw Ong Bak 2 already. i was disappointed. i was hoping for more muay thai fight and action scenes. there's hardly any muay thai in part 2. the action scenes were good though
  • Fir3Wolf
I only watched the first Ong Bak for the fighting and so I enjoyed it. This looks to be more of the same. Crappy story but great action scenes.
  • Tony Jaa can kick-ass with the best of the world.Shame he's a bit wooden.Although no-one should mess with his left-leg.What a round house.
  • Dont know what the fuss is over this, fight scenes are amazing but the acting and overall film making is horrible and unwatchable. Ill just watch the fight scenes on youtube later.

i like these tony jaa movies but i have one question...why do they always call them ong bak??ok name the first one that..thats cool.but when tom yum goong came out and was released here as the protector, some tried to label THAT as ong bak 2..and now this comes out as ong bak 2 but has NOTHING to do with the first movie??..can they think of no other film title for a tony jaa movie??
  • Donivan
They have to get him established.Ong Bak was his break out film and that is what the most of the viewing audience associate Tony Jaa.Once he hits a bigger status,a larger audience they will have different titles.Until then ,look for Ong Bak 3,4 and 5.

Saw this at SXSW as well, terrible movie. The last 15 minutes are the only solid bits of martial arts and it culminates with an abrupt and laughable ending.

justwanted to say-thanks for the info regarding the hassle Tony Jaa went through to get 2 made.I live in Belfast, and have only been able to get the Thai Collectors edition-with t-shirt and signed postcard of Tony.. I came online to find out what the situation was regarding a western release-if there IS one,or is going to be-'Coz,although I am perfectly happy with my Thai edition,It would be kinda neat to see it with subtitles or dubbing, just to make sure of a couple of plot-points where I only have intuition to go on
Your site has been miost helpful!

Sorry to come back so quick, but Im in a hurry here, and just signed up to various things as well. Just wanted to say-WAHEY! Reading the posts on this subject from the last couple of months was excellent! Talk about a divided audience! Obviously,I come out on the "PRO-Jaa" side, but its good to see some contention! Also-everybody mentioned a film I didnt recognise the name of-is everyone aware of a Tony Jaa film called "Warrior Lord"? It s been issued as a 2disc with the 1st Ong Bak,and also as a single disc. It has Tony going to Australia in search of a kidnapped elephant he grew up with! Madness. Now that Ong Bak 2 is out, this one seems to be geetting more publicity-it even has the bald guy who goes ahead of Tony in the 1st one-in this,he's become an Aussie Cop!Mark-thats his name!
Really would like to know if its getting a proper western release, tho. I'll find out somewhere.
    Thats enough from me!
  • An effort that handily trumps the first in every respect, Ong-Bak 2 further cements Tony Jaa's status as one of the era's key action stars.
