LOL: Megan Fox vs Michael Bay

michael_bay_megan_fox_fight

Regardless of her acting talent, which frankly has yet to be proven (look to Jennifer’s Body for that) you’ve got to love Megan Fox. On screen some comes across like the ultimate fembot, glammed- and dolled-up almost beyond the point of humanity. She’s a pouting, posing, running machine, especially in the hands of Michael Bay. But in interviews she’s reliably awesome, because she evidently thinks she’s hot enough to say any damn thing in the world. And, for right now, that might be true. Cue a bunch of slightly trash-talking comments about Bay and Transformers 2, which has led to a head-shaking, condescending response from Bay. What better way to start the weekend?

Earlier this month Fox dropped the first Bay bomb, when she said that of her acting ability, we’d only seen “seven percent. On the new one [Transformers 2], I tried. But unless you’re a seasoned veteran, working with Michael Bay is not about an acting experience.” Which might not be a dig against Bay exactly; more like a truthful assessment. Her follow-up makes that pretty clear. “I don’t want to blow smoke up people’s ass. People are well aware that this is not a movie about acting. And once you realize that, it becomes almost fun because you can be in the moment and go, ‘All right, I know that when he calls Action! I’m either going to be running or screaming, or both.’” Then she said that she still doesn’t understand Transformers 2, because it must be a movie made for geniuses.

Bay’s response, in the Wall Street Journal, was fantastic.

Well, that’s Megan Fox for you. She says some very ridiculous things because she’s 23 years old and she still has a lot of growing to do. You roll your eyes when you see statements like that and think, “Okay Megan, you can do whatever you want. I got it.” But I 100% disagree with her. Nick Cage wasn’t a big actor when I cast him, nor was Ben Affleck before I put him in “Armageddon.” Shia LaBeouf wasn’t a big movie star before he did “Transformers”—and then he exploded. Not to mention Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, from “Bad Boys.” Nobody in the world knew about Megan Fox until I found her and put her in “Transformers.” I like to think that I’ve had some luck in building actors’ careers with my films.

He’s right about helping build actors’ careers, and he’s certainly made Megan Fox. But he hasn’t done it by making them act, so there’s a little give and take in that statement. He even circles around an admission that his movies aren’t for actors with another statement to the WSJ.

I’ve been talking to some big actors right now about something that is totally different. A small dark comedy, a true story, with actors just acting, no effects. I’m done with effects movies for now.

So what effect will this have on Fox’s chances for Transformers 3? Hard to say now. Bay sounds like he’s not much interested in the film, and when he does get around to it, hard to imagine that he’d push away one of the reasons for the film’s great popularity with the boys. Besides, he sounds like the kind of guy who’d hire Fox again just so he could really make her work her ass off. I can imagine that if she does end up in Transformers 3, she’ll realize the running and screaming so far has been nothing compared to what he could make her do.

  • rapistwerewolves
they are both kinda right...even if Bay is totally full of himself
  • I don't care much for Megan Fox.... I think I would actually take Bay's side on this one.
  • Its all cos bay rejected the sweet kitten of magen fox ... her nether regions boil of fury of rejection like a winter storm about to merge with hurricane ike!
  • Juiceless
Wow. More time in English class, less time posting comments, dabomb.
  • Peter
Yeah, shes hot and everything, but she's so full of herself it's disturbing. She believes she can get away with talking shit about anyone or anything just because she's so hot.
  • ericdpalmer
Right there with you on Fox... sub-par actress with IMO a trashy look/vibe. As for Bay he's in the best position ever and can pretty much say/do whatever he wants for the time being. Think about it: the man can LITERALLY sell a pile of shit in a can to millions of people and they're coming back for seconds!
  • omgwtflmao
    OMGWTFLMAO
  • Mark
Although Transformers one and two are horrendous and gave me migraines, you'd think Megan Fox would STFU about it. She has so far showed ZERO acting talent but she's one of the hottest young stars in Hollywood today. Without Bay she's simply a wannabe waitress. She should be sucking him off right now actually.
  • alittler
I agree and I dont. Megan agrees she cant act (or very well) yet she KNOWS she is still on contract for a third and, no matter what she says, she will be in a lot of movies. I find her and her toe-thumb annoying, but she is showing some form of cleverness here
  • toe-thumb HAHAHAHAHAHA
  • omgwtflmao
no she should be sucking me off right now
  • yea i originally was very annoyed with megan fox, but the more i see her getting interviewed she tends to crack me up. I dont know if she has any real acting ability but she definitely has more personality that just hasn't been shown in any movies. She wants to prove she has chops as an actor and Bay wants to prove he has chops as a real director, so get to work you two!!
  • Burf
Megan Fox and Michael Bay epitomize what is wrong with the film industry today.
  • Susan
Yea totally agree Overpaid stars and delusional directors.
  • Harvey Dent
Your a typical movie snob idiot. And you know nothing. I guess the film industry would be better if not one of Bay's movies made it two the big screen right? Fuck off.
  • shatner
    u fuck off bitch
  • Burf
Did I strike a nerve? Judging by your comment you seem to be Bay's target audience.
  • Plan9
FTW. "Target audience!" HAHA! How many big screens?!? Your a typical movie snob idiot?!? Yours or mine? HAHAHAHA! It's so easy, it almost feels wrong.

    Almost.
  • Wait...what?
  • nycTrax
    What?
  • box elder
bleep blop blorp. i made comment now.
  • Right. Today. Like movie stars and directors have never acted like this? Watch All About Eve. It's 60 years old and is only about the stage, and yet the star, writer and director all clash. Get a clue.
  • Captain Awesome
People say this every 20 years. It's nothing new nor are these two people responsible for anything. Other than the work they have produced today.
  • Transformers may have made her into a star, but that doesn't mean Megan Fox has to delude herself into believing utter fantasy. She was absolutely right in her remarks, Michael Bay's films are not a showcase for acting Oscars.
  • cantona_x
Funny to see Bay's first two examples, both has been considered as promising actors and now all LOL screen icon.
Hope the third man won't take the same road
  • megan fox needs to put her real talents to work in a field that's more demanding of her...porn.
  • zstrankman
Completly agree Neon. Seriously, what if an actress like Fox just decided to do hardcore porn? Someone like say, Reese Witherspoon a few years back or Kristen Bell. It would be a first I think. Going from legit Hollywood movies to gonzo porn would be very interesting. I hope to see it in my lifetime. It would take some balls but I think really that's the way things are headed in our society. Just my 2 cents.
  • angel
aleluyah, that bitch needs some reality pills
  • omgwtflmao
    NEONBEAR that would be NICE
  • fex
Fuck that, every one of those actors help put Bay on the map. He's a turd that rode their slip-stream to the top. All "HIS" movies get play cause they have big names or big properties attached. It's by sheer luck that he's tolerated up til this point.

Let's be real. The reason ROTF is making money is because it's based on a beloved 80's Cartoon and there wasn't shit else to do for two weeks or so. People wanted a distraction, they got it. Michael Jackson died and next week we'll move on to something else. Megan Fox is just an accessory along the way.
  • CyT
Actually the reason its making money is its got huge friggin robots fighting! What else is as good to watch on a huge frickin cinema screen than huge friggin robots fighting?!?! And if your gonna make a movie about huge friggin robots fighting ... then who better than Michael Bay?!?!!?

Michael Bay has a time and a place ... and that time and place caters for many millions of people. There is nothing wrong with him at all and his movies are always a bit of fun. I, for one, like our robot overlord director.
  • tHE
Wrong. Everyone went to go see Transformers because they were assuming/hoping that there would be giant robots fighting. Unfortunately... besides the first 10 minutes... all I saw were military personal, robots fighting people, and (of course) explosions. Bay screwed up the fights in T1 by having them all close up.... and then in this he zoomed out to far so all we got were dust clouds and the military guys.

Megan Fox is awesome... For those of you who think she's a snob for saying the truth, wtf? I consider her relatively normal.
  • Megan Fox is all kinds of awesome for being honest.
  • AdventCiervo
Sorry but I have to call shenanigans on Bay. Everyone knows that Fast Times at Ridgemont High made Nicolas Cage famous. Best 2 minute cameo ever.
  • Kurash
Bay made Nicholas Cage? You mean that guy who won Best Actor prior to being in The Rock? If anything, I'd buy the argument that Bay turned Cage from the artist he once was into the blockbuster hack he is now.
  • EvanJDeBiase
as far as i'm concerned, Cage's career didn't even start until Con Air.
  • box elder
funny, that's about when i thought it ended(except for adaptation).
  • CyT
funny, I didnt even realise he had one. He's the same bloody person in every single movie he's in.
  • I like it when actors are being honest for once.
  • lv
Yeah, I dunno about Bay's comment about helping make the actors he casts superstars. I'd argue most of them were already on their way. They might not have been in blockbusters before he cast them, but most of those actors were at least "big actors" in an already recognized as talented kind of way, right? Especially Nick Cage. Wasn't he nominated for an Oscar before Rock? And in Moonlighting and Raising Arizona and other stuff a decade before Bay. If anything, I hate Bay for introducing Cage to the blockbuster. After the Rock, it's been a bunch of crappy moneymakers after another. Affleck, I guess he helped get his face out there but he was already coming off of Good Will Hunting. Not like he discovered Affleck on the street or anything. Smith and Lawrence helped put Bay on the map cause they made Bad Boys good. It was his first movie. They may not have been superstars, but they had more credits than him and had small fan bases. Goes both ways Bay.
  • Egger Buckland
Please make her run and scream right off a cliff.
  • CheshireAna
Now that I would pay to see.
  • Prathik
Man.. I hate megan fox's voice, shes got this.. banal sounding voice .. its like..
"syaaaaaamm" I dunno how to explain it.
  • Willy
Despite all the Michael Bay hate, he has put a couple of people on the map. Transformers may not be about acting but Megan Fox should be grateful for being propelled into the spotlight by these movies.
  • Lips Manless
Ironhide said he wouldn't return to 3 if he wasn't given more to do. Bay, give Megan more to do next time. Let her eat a pot brownie, or write symbols with a cake. Or hump someone's leg. Maybe tie the story together with her father. Anything.

    Just do it, nimrod.
  • splosion
tell it how it is, michael bay
  • JKW3000
If you've seen the special features on the Criterion version of Armageddon (I have thankfully been able to avoid that movie while my best friend, a film nerd like me, got to suffer it for me), the biggest thing that seems to be conveyed from the interviews and whatnot is that Bay wants the same kind of consideration auteur filmmakers get. So it's pretty amusing to see how this is a definite running theme with the guy, to the point where he can't even take a small slight from Megan Fox without breaking out the insecurity blanket.

But yeah, they're both sorta right and mostly full of themselves. How sad. And I definitely agree that his help with actors' careers is overblown. The man makes summer blockbusters; a lot of exposure for the actors is incidental to the mainstream audience that the genre tries to attract. The actors Bay listed, I argue that they got big for movies other than the ones Bay directed (Cage, Leaving Las Vegas; Affleck, Good Will Hunting; Will Smith, Independence Day; Shia LaBeouf...just sucks, if Indy 4 was any indicator). Any attractive person could be in a Bay film and get big (Hi Megan!), just like any other competent, special-effects talented director probably could've done a good, if not better, job with Transformers than Bay (you're telling me JJ Abrams, Peter Jackson, James Cameron, even the initial choice of Spielberg, they couldn't have done a better job?)

A Couple Things to Point Out:
    1. Michael Bay is absolutely an auteur. I am not the biggest Michael Bay fan in the world, though I do enjoy some his films, he has a style and a substance that cannot be replicated. If you really want to look back at all his films there are THEMES and a WORLDVIEW, no matter how silly or dumb or pathetic they are, that you can find. Ed Wood was also an auteur. I have seen a lot of his movies and he has a style and substance that, as bad as they both are, cannot be reproduced. Also there are themes that he keeps on going back to. Here is an excerpt of the Manohla Dargis review of Transformers 2.
"Mr. Bay is an auteur. His signature adorns every image in his movies, as conspicuously as that of Lars von Trier, and every single one is inscribed with a specific worldview and moral sensibility. Mr. Bay’s subject — overwhelming violent conquest — is as blatant and consistent as his cluttered mise-en-scène. His images, particularly during the frequent action sequences, can be difficult to visually track, but they are also consistently disjointed. (And proudly self-referential: the only director he overtly cites is himself, with a shot of the poster for his movie “Bad Boys II.”) The French filmmaker Jacques Rivette once described an auteur as someone who speaks in the first person. Mr. Bay prefers to shout. "

    2. All of those people that Michael Bay mentioned were big stars before they appeared in any of his films. Nicolas Cage and Ben Affleck were both Oscar winners when they worked with Michael Bay, Shia LaBeouf had already opened a movie that went on to gross over $100 million worldwide, and Martin Lawrence and Will Smith were both pretty big names at the time of Bad Boys.

    3. He completely misread her quote. She wasn't ripping on Transformers 2 as much as just saying that the acting is not the thing you go for when you go to see a Michael Bay film. I am pretty sure that is true.
  • JKW3000
    1. Point taken, I suppose I should revise my statement. I meant that he wanted the same respect as filmmakers who are known as "auteurs" for the right reasons, the positive connotations of that term that label one's signature as an artistic contribution to the medium, as opposed to a detriment. Bay is an auteur, you're right, but clearly in the same vein as an Ed Wood or Uwe Boll. However, I don't necessarily believe that he can't be replicated, and the lack of attempts to replicate him are probably due more to a lack of desire to do so than a genuine inability to mimic his style. GI Joe, for example, looks like a poor Michael Bay ripoff, which probably says a lot.

    2. and 3. Agreed, though beyond Bay misreading the quote, I am willing to argue that he would still find offense at the "acting is not his thing" statement. My only reason for arguing this is because one of Transformers 2's biggest weaknesses is that too much of the film's focus was on the progresson of Shia LaBeouf's character. While that's usually not a bad thing, it is the lack of a serious focus on acting that makes this a poor choice of script execution. Yet he still chooses to linger on Sam, moreso than he did in the first film and to the point where EVERYBODY took a back seat to him, which signified (to me, anyway) that he wanted the crux of the film's epic scope to be on the character undertaking a hero's journey as opposed to being the human counterpoint to a giant robot fight. But either way, yeah, agreed on both points.
  • I agree with her. I don't think she was trying to be coy or bitchy. She was stating a fact, there is not much acting in Trans 2, just lots of explosions.
    The movies are actor proof.
