Right now, geeks are having difficulty formulating their conflicted emotions about pics of a 15-year-old Dakota Fanning on the set of The Runaways, the 2010 girl-punker biopic. At times like this, I think the guttural proclamation, “Um, that’s racist like a robot!” will suffice. But yeah, Just Jared via Chud has posted a bevy of publicity-stunt pics of Fanning, as jail-bait lead-singer Cherie Currie, tangling around with Kristen Stewart, as leather-clad guitarist Joan Jett. Like a bearded Michael Musto, writer Devin Faraci predicts the movie could spark a fashion revolution amongst teen girls. I could see that happening. Maybe. I mean, the cover of Nylon magazine and exposure in Urban Outfitters is prob a lock. And Warped Tour would definitely be up for a lame “interactive” meet and greet. A new, recommended pic of Stewart, in a Stooges tee no less, after the jump…

Whether the film is a critical success and/or box office sleeper will come down to the direction of video director Floria Sigismondi (White Stripes, David Bowie). And the music/concerts will also be a huge factor, of course. Right now, I’m getting a Lords of Dogtown vibe sans a Y chromosome plus the Twilight connection, but I actually think Dogtown, performance-wise, is a tad underrated, so…

After carrying much of the fantastic Adventureland, I’m curious to see if Stewart dives into the role or plays it surface-level. Per Russ’s great coverage of the film’s casting, Michael Shannon (the excellent Bug) as punk impresario Kim Fowley and Halloween’s Scout Taylor-Compton (who loves emo dudes, judging by our H2 visit), as lead guitarist Lita Ford, would seem to endorse the former commitment. And at least it’s not a fucking remake or a feature film about the thrilling story of Manic Panic.

  • This is actually old news. Live Journals, Oh No They Didn't has been showing pics of this movie since it first started shooting last month.

i love lords of dogtown, i was always amazed at how well cast the film was. especially tony alva's and staceys characters. heath ledger does a perfect skip. knoxville was a bit pathetic in it.... the film rekindled my love of skating!

if this film does the same for the runaways, joan jett, and lita ford. i will be very impressed!
  • Two things:
    A) Kristin Stewart is sexy.
    B) THAT'S DAKOTA FANNING?!
  • Burf
That looks nothing like Dakota Fanning.
  • Daniel
If this movie does start a trend of girls dressing like this, I APPROVE.
  • Jake
    How is that racist?

At first glance I thought it was Emily Blunt... Wow, she sure has matured...
The pose and the look on the face of Kristen is sweet as well.
  • Dakota Fanning is 15?! She's soooo old now!
  • Sketch
Wow Kristen is looking like she's upping the hot slutty junkie up a few notches. And I LIKE IT!

this is not looking bad. the girls have the look right, and they're both pretty good actesses, also michael shannon was the only good thing about revolutionary road so i'm stoked he's in this. we'll see.

I've look at young pictures of Cherie and Joan, and my lord they were very sexualized when they were 16. 16 years old! I mean..Cherie never had a bra on in some of her pictures. It blows my mind on what gets away back then, and what gets away now LOL.
  • Pete (original)
Kristen Stewart yes. Dakota Fanning just weird.
  • RainMan
I already wanted to fuck Joan Jett but now you can make it a double.
  • LuMendz
Uhmm... yeah, Fanning looks sooo weird. Either her face is too powdered up or she's extremely pale. She looks like a mannequin.
    Stewart looks good though.

I cannot picture Stewart or Fanning in these roles. These two still look like babies to me. I cannot see Fanning running around onstage in barely there clothing belting out out Cherry Bomb. OR she and Stewart getting it on together in their lesbian scene. Bad casting.
