Just a week ago we reported on Buried, the indie thriller about a civilian contractor in Iraq who is kidnapped and buried alive, to be played by Ryan Reynolds. Now The Playlist got quotes from an Autralian TV interview with Reynolds, who says the movie is all him, all the time. One man, one coffin, one crazy thriller.

Buried is the story about a guy who’s buried (laughs). It’s the only movie I’ve ever heard of with only one person in it. So it’s just me, I’m the only person in the whole movie so, I don’t know, we’ll see. It’s either going to be, you know, the greatest, most experimental cool movie ever made or god knows what.

Furthermore, ScriptShadow has a brief script review, which calls Buried “top-notch storytelling”. The script sounds like eighty pages of ticking clocks, with tension all over the place. Hereare two scene-setting paragraphs. Guess this could be called spoilerish if you’re ridiculously militant about that sort of thing.

Paul, an American truck driver in Iraq, has just woken up in a coffin. It’s burning up. Hot as balls. Lack of oxygen makes it hard to breathe. And let’s not forget the coffin, which only allows him a few inches of room in every direction. I will offer this warning right now: If you are claustrophobic, do not read this script.

At first Paul has no memory of how he got here. But things start slowly coming back to him. He was driving a truck, delivering food, when there was a loud explosion. Many of his co-workers were killed but somehow he wasn’t. He remembers Iraqis coming towards him. But after that? Nothing. Now he’s down here, in a grave, in Iraq.

Consider not just the confinement of being buried alive, but the heat of being in a shallow grave in Iraq. What about the danger of artillery and bombs? There are other elements to the story, too, but I’ll let you read the full piece at ScriptShadow if you want to know more.

But as far as Buried being the first movie with only one actor, nope. Someone get Reynolds a copy of Robert Altman’s Secret Honor, featuring a remarkable performance from Philip Baker Hall as Richard Nixon. Not the first one-man movie, but the first that comes to mind, and a great one to boot.

  • sounds great. Reynolds can be a fantastic actor when given the right role and I think he is going to shine in this one. I'll be first in line.

The whole thing reminds me of the Tarantino episode of CSI, which, IMO, was the best episode they have ever done, largely because of the extreme atmosphere throughout the episode. If the director is able to capture even half of that feeling, then we will have a winner.

This sounds very interesting to say the least. I'd be interested in seeing something like this for sure.

Hey whats that picture beside Reynolds? As an art fan just curios, and it would be cool as background on my laptop. Oh and the movie sounds cool too BTW.

Something that came up when I did an image search for 'buried alive'.

    Hey thinks.

Seriously, I'd like to know too. It's bugging me.

I'm going to have to agree with the quote:
"the greatest, most experimental cool movie ever made or god knows what."
With more of an emphasis on the "god knows what part.
I was already interested to see this,
now I'm interested to see if Reynolds can pull this off...
keeping me interested that’s for sure.
    ...
  • sounds very intriguing, i think Reynolds can pull it off

Uh, I'm all for "experimental" film and new, fresh ideas, but seriously....nothing but Ryan Reynolds for an hour and a half? That's it? He'd better at least have his shirt off for the entire running time, that's all I have to say.

He's going the Sam Rockwell Moon road and doing a movie alone? Nice? Hard to judge with Ryan. Sometimes he's funny, other times he does serious like stuff.

thats really effing impressive if someone can actually write an entire movie that takes place in a coffin.

but one question, how does he remember the events leading up to it if there is only 1 person in the movie. does a memory count as multiple people? otherwise, sounds weird if hes just saying "ok i remember this this and this" if hes the only person there.

sounds intriguiing though. love ryan reynolds.

kind of reminds me of phone booth, which I loved. I'll be keeping up with this one

It's good to see Reynolds showing off his acting chops more. Sure he is in action movies, frat boy comedies and rom coms, but the guy really can act. As seen in The Nines, Chaos Theory and Fireflies in the Garden.

They weren't very popular movies but that doesn't mean anything really. Films like The Nines are never gonna be big hits.

As long as the guy stops looking so damm orange I will give this flick a shot.

The premise sounds interesting -- hope they all pull it off.

Back to the orange thing... really?

The only thing onscreen for the entire movie is Ryan Reynolds? Didn't take long for Hollywood to produce Ass.
  • frelling_cute
If he is buried alive without his shirt for the entire movie, I am in.

    Contracter?

    Contracter?

You're just doing that to annoy me now, aren't you, Russ?
