Yet another rusty nail has been driven into my hopes and dreams the coffin of a potential Brian Singer Superman Returns sequel. Talking to Omelete during a Scott Pilgrim set visit, Brandon Routh has admitted that his multi-movie contract with Warners Superman franchise has lapsed. Their original story is in Portuguese, but my IT-abetted attempt at a translation will follow after the break… with a little bonus ‘good news’ about Routh’s upcoming picture Dead of Night.

Here are the key quotes from Routh. Firstly, on the small matter of the contract:

The term of the contract expired. But if they call me again, I’ll go back to the character without thinking twice.

On Warners’ plans for the series:

I do not know anything. I’m sure that Warner Bros. is moving there, but everything is still uncertain. Actually, I do not know anything.

On why he thinks Superman Returns may have disappointed:

I think it is missing some beating.

By which I suppose I mean action, but all of the internet translators I can find only get as close as ‘beating’. Honestly, though I don’t know that it needed more action as much as a different evil scheme for Lex Luthor. The one in the film just doesn’t seem high-stakes enough, and is a little difficult to identify with. Pretty much everything else in the film clicks, I think. I’m definitely keen to read Tarantino’s epic review of the film if/when he gets time to finish it.

Routh’s next starring role in the Dylan Dog movie Dead of Night was rumored to be going straight to DVD for a while before Platinum Studios’ Dan Forcey told Think McFly Think that they were “contractually obligated and guaranteed a theatrical release of at least 1,100 screens” and “couldn’t do direct-to-DVD if we wanted to.”

Doesn’t change the fact that it has a truly dreadful screenplay and will very possibly feel like a direct-to-DVD movie, though.

Sorry Brandon. Time for Tom Welling to step in.
  • jerome villalun
tom welling is nothing, mr. brandoun is the best
  • oh.hai
Why are all of you nerds obsessed with Welling?
  • Joey
Because, Tom Welling has played a great Clark Kent on Smallville since 2001, and we all want to see him in the f-ing Superman costume.
  • Ryz
He still looks like a kid :S
  • dannyboy
F Tom Welling his never going to be in the reboot of Superman plus Tom even said he does not want to wear the Superman costume
  • Danette
    Because he's amazing<3
    ;D
Why do you care so much?
  • raja
It's true that the Nerds love Tom Welling. Hate the show, but love it's star. Go figure. I guess it is what is also said with Routh, that he's not responsible for the writing or directing. Such is the fate of Superman actors.
  • I would rather take a CGI Christopher Reeve then Welling or Routh.
  • RainMan
Would he be bald and talk with a cancer kazoo?
  • Tom
I didn't care for the Singer Superman personally. I didn't think there was enough action, and I didn't agree with Singer's insistence on essentially recreating the original Richard Donner film. He offered nothing in the way of actual fresh content, save the Superman Jr. thing that so many people thought was insulting to the character as established in the comics. The kid was not an issue for me, but since his existence was the one new idea in the movie, you can understand my frustration.

Routh's casting was part of Singer's obsession with the Chris Reeve films, since he physically looks so much like the earlier actor and was easily able to recreate Reeve's performance to a 'T'. I wouldn't mind seeing Routh again in the role, in a film that allows him to make more of his own mark with his performance.

And no Tom Welling, thanks. I've never understood the worship of that unwatchable show. Meh.
  • tHE
    ^All this. I'm loving it.

I still don't understand why they picked Routh. He's not tall enough, he's not bulky enough, and he looks way to... young. I love the guy as an actor but he would've been a much better choice for a part like Nightwing.
  • Solid
There was nothing wrong with the movie. We just weren't ready to see superman in such a different/unique vision and probably still aren't. I grew up reading superman comics and watching the tv show and he's been through so many different changes, styles, weird shit, the movie's really tame compared to that stuff. Even dark knight made radical changes but since it wasn't too bad, suddenly it's the best comicbook movie ever. Oh and batman had flashlight eyes or something so it's accurates. whatever... He still killed two face.
  • Regarding Dead of Night, just because it's contractually obligated to be released theatrical doesn't mean the distributor will do a good job of it. A whole bunch of movies are released theatrically for just a week, or even just a weekend, to fulfill "theatrical obligations" (Jessica Simpson's "Major Movie Star" comes to mind).

I wouldn't be surprised if they did a day-and-date release, or at the very least release the DVD the week after it's in theatres.
  • João André Farinha
The correct translation of the phrase "I think it is missing some beating." would be: "I think it is missing [the movie] some fighting. It's curious, but while filming I noticed I spent the whole movie being beaten up and didn't really have the chance to fightback".
  • While I wasn't a huge fan of Superman Returns, I did really think Routh was perfect for the role. Shame really.
  • mangos
Routh was great. and my fav part of the movie.
  • benjaminminter
superman returns was dreadfully flawed, but i think Routh makes a great Kent/Supes. I hope he returns to the role. Welling is okay but i'd rather see Routh get a second chance and nail it with a quality screenplay. and Bizzaro should be introduced. thats right, you heard me, he's kind of a joke character in the comics but, if taken seriously, wouldn't it be cool to see Superman fight a dark version of himself. maybe throw in a little Zod for good measure.
  • I really hope they get the Superman stuff right because I think a reboot isn't that bad of an idea but it's not the best idea right now. I think a sequel will work well and make more money than Superman Returns did. Well, if that's what WB's worried about.
  • Justin
Brandon Routh was easily the best part about Superman Returns.
  • Morgan
Routh was dull and wooden as Superman. Actors of his skill level are a dime a dozen in Hollywood. Just pull any waiter off the line. Hell the dude was a bartender himself before they pushed him out there.
  • boomboom
Jon Hamm would be so awesome as Superman that you'd forget you ever knew the name of Routh.

  • Octoberist
I feel bad for Brandon because while yes..he's been in movies and making some dough, BUT he was a victim of a failed Hollywood franchise. Well, I hate using the word 'fail' but obviously, WB is sitting on Superman so it wasn't a hit to them.

But Brandon seems to be the casualty in all of this. I mean, dudes like Kevin Spacey can always move on. I hope that Dead of Night ends up being good and a decent hit for Routh.
  • oh.hai
Yes, Jon Hamm as Superman. That would be sweet. He can actually act! And he has shown in Mad Men he can play dark characters.

The fluff and quasi-50's feel to Superman Returns felt outdated.
  • revolt
    BR? BR!? I REPORT YUO
  • Danisgod6491
I would like for him to come back. Give Him a Villain to Fight, some one like Bizarro or Brainiac. Let Richard Donner Diract it. I think it should something along the lines of All-Star Superman.
  • jason B
i fully believe that if given second chance, singer/routh would blow audiences away. i really doubt we'll ever find out, which is very disappointing to me. i think the superman world that singer created was amazing.

while superman is not my favorite hero, i cannot deny the fact that as a comic hero - that character belongs at the top of the food chain. the superman film legacy should be competitive with every other comic film out there. joe quesada took a few jabs at DC recently, and i'd really love to see Marvel films continue to be embarrassed by the superior quality of DC films. well, i love the marvel films too - some of them - i just hate hypocrites.

as far as welling goes, i'd be happy with either him or routh.
  • Dr. Loomis
All of this talk of Welling stepping into the suit is hilarious, there is an interview which he clearly states in so many words, the reason he doesn't want to wear the suit. Could things have changed, sure.

It is plainly obvious, to me at least, that Welling is doing the show for a paycheck and wants to be left alone. He doesn't promote the show at all, the only appearances he makes are to promote the rare film he stars in.

All of this back and forth between Routh and Welling fans about who is a better actor blows my mind, both of these guys are average at best, let's not lose our logic.
  • Rockie
    Routh did a good job

Welling is good but needs to stay in a Smallville movie

and of course Reeve IS superman
  • Warner Brothers is stupid for botching this. Brandon Routh is the perfect choice for Superman.

Why have both 20th Century Fox and Warner Brothers made things so difficult for Brian Singer?
  • Egger Buckland
But.. but.. when are they going to make a GOOD Superman film?
  • joe
    Yo , I know it's off-topic, but....

I heard you on the radio tonight, Brendon! About the Bruno Michael Jackson scene. Great stuff!
  • Enthropii
Welling is a weak actor, and Smallville is honstly a waste of time. I was ok with Routh, but I wouldn't say no to a recast. Perhaps John Hamm. But nothing from Smallvilleverse.
  • Palmer
I wouldn't mind Brandon Routh being Superman again. And I liked Spacey as Luthor. But I do agree that Superman Returns did lack action. But I'm not sure about Bryan Singer returning. I did like the first and second X-Men movies. But he hasn't really wowed me since then. Though he has only made two movies since leaving X-Men (Superman Returns and Valkyrie).
  • Danette
I love Tom Welling, but he said he didn't want to wear the suite D:
  • frelling_cute
Welling shows more charisma in Smallville than Routh did the entire movie.
  • fred
ROUTH WAS LAME AND UNCHARISMATIC. IT WAS STUPID TO HIRE A CHRISTOPHER REEVES LOOK-ALIKE. NEXT.

I apologize for the caps, but it DID get you to read it, didn't it? Go ahead and downvote.
  • Franklin
I'm not one of those folks with a homoerotic attachment to either Welling or the costume. I'd also rather have someone play the role with something more than Desperate Housewives-level acting ability. Routh seemed to be thinking about the entirety of the character's history, giving the proceedings the requisite gravitas while also maintaining the larger-than-life qualities that make comic book movies work. Singer was the issue with that film, not Routh.
  • Brandon Routh sucked in Superman and Brian Singer is a horrible director. Superman Returns was such crap. Not one real fight and Superman's a no show Dad. Conelly you have the worst taste you should be fired from /film. Singer should never be allowed to do any super hero movie ever again. DC should getet a new director and have Superman fight someone for once.
  • stb247
That's a shame. I love Superman Returns and always hoped there would be a Singer sequel (which would be awesome, I just know it)

I cannot understand the hate for a movie that I found to be more entertaining than Batman Begins or even TDK.
  • AnnikaD
I have never in any way see Routh so I can not express myself in anything but read the comments here and yeh Jon Hamm would be perfect but that is my biggest Clark Kent is and will remain, Tom Welling and he would be the right person here . But I am just a simple Swedish so ....
  • Cindy
Greetings! Your English is very good and better than our Swedish. I too would prefer Tom Welling, but be very happy with Jon Hamm.
  • Roger, The Shrubber
I'm brazilian, and yeah, when they do say beating they mean action. Routh says that in the middle of shooting the film he noticed that Superman got beat up a lot and didn't really get a chance to fight back.
  • Chris
the studio is going to re-boot superman for a 12/13 release date.

the main problem is getting a decent direction in order, Singer is still under the contract and will remain till they have a clue what to do with the franchise. it will cost too much to let him go when they have no idea where to go instead with the show.

a decent script that gets some positive buzz is really what is needed, expect to see some movement on this picture when the GL hits, those numbers will play a huge part in where SUPERMAN goes. everybody go see GL if you want a SUPERMAN flick.
  • I kind of enjoyed Superman Returns. Guess I'm one of few. Didn't care for the "superboy" angle. Like Brodie says in "Mallrats": "Superman and Lois could never do it, he'd blow a load through her back like a shotgun." As far as any new superman, it doesn't matter who does it, we're still gonna hate on it. Nothing will top the original.
  • crazymrtibbs
I always thought Superman Returns has the same reboot charm Batman Begins has. It was decent, but not spectacular, and mostly acts as a base for an epic story to launch from. Singer gave Superman an added weakness, a son, as well as some depth with a savior/god- humanity relationship. Which were important things that needed to happen so that he could actually face risk; as well as have inner conflict. Besides some odd pacing, weak Luthor plot, and mediocre-at-best Bosworth- its a fantastic film.
  • slothlovechunk19
I have never cared for Smallville, tried to watch it many times just can't do it. I don't think that Welling is especially bad he just doesn't pull off the role of Superman for me. I think that Singers version was awesome. I have avoided commenting on this topic because I seem highly outnumbered and it doesn't seem worth the effort but with this contract expiration I guess I am running out of ops to defend this film. The big complaint from everyone, my frineds, online, etc is the lack of action. I don't I guess I still appreciate story. I prefer the donner cut of Superman 2 to the Lester version. Most of the great graphic novels are story intense, action is secondary. I understand that this is Superman and that he has amazing powers and "we" want to seem him use them but I can't stand a 90 minute explosion, that's why I don't like Bay films. With that being said looking at numbers obviously explosions put asses in the seats and as far as box office is concerned I can see why "action" is important but as far as people still complaining online about this not being a good movie, I cannot understand that. The same people lick the celluloid scrot of Dick Donner and worship the first one tear into this one for being story heavy. This movie was made in the last ten years and cannot receive the nostalgic, classic status, and is victim to sensory dead constantly plugged in ever angry modern nerd. I hope Bryan Singer gets another chance. I hope we see more movies like Superman Returns. I hope that the same people that pollute their trousers at the mention of Batman Begins and Donners Superman try and compare the amount of action in each of those films before they attack a newer picture for a "lack" of action. I read graphic novels, not every one but a handful every month and I think that the transition between action comics into story heavy comics as has happened in the past 25 years or so is a welcome one and the reverse happening in film would be a sad thing.
  • Enol
Tom Welling isn't a bad Clark Kent... but Superman... Superman is Brandon Routh. The best Superman since Christopher Reeve.
  • Dave
I'm a huge Superman fan but c'mon. Superman 1-4 were terrible, awful films. And Christopher Reeve (rest his soul) was awful. I dont see how any one can try to say that Superman Returns "doesn't compare" to the original... are ya serious??? Lois' inner monologue, Lois dying, Margot Kidder in general. yuck. And yeah ok Superman Returns was basically a different version of Superman: the movie. Which is a rip off to ALL of us fans. Tom Welling... good for the Smallville show. Would Rock in a Smallville movie, but has said on more then one occasion that he has no interest in the superman costume. So it shouldn't even be an arguing point. Brandon Routh.. Appeared to be trying to be Christopher Reeve, but in fact was not.. he had never even picked up a superman comic or seen one of the movies before he took the role.. he was a bumblinng bafoon of a clark (just like Christopher Reeve) but in my opinion he was probably just doing what the director (who had seen Superman movies) was telling him to do.. NOW..., if you wanna get started on staying true to the "original" lets look @ the original series with George Reeves, he was NOT a bumbling bafoon what so ever he took charge much like Tom Welling does on Smallville. I'm not even sure why i'm writing this.. i guess any true Superman fan would just be greatful that they do infact make another movie.. regardless of who it stars.. Or how much action is in it.. i Just love seeing Superman in theaters..
  • Thank the heavens. Awful film, with awful casting!
