Shock Till You Drop has some exclusive bad news: Screen Gems and Sony are racing to get another Resident Evil film in the can for release on September 17, 2010. Given the end of the third film, participation of Milla Jovovich is likely, and we know that Paul W.S. Anderson (director of the first film, writer and producer of all three previous movies) is writing this one, and will likely produce but not direct. What more is there to say? A little bit, actually, and it’s after the jump.

Plans for Resident Evil 4 have been rumored for almost a year. Sure, some of the talent involved said the third film was the last, but Extinction opened well and has done $150m worldwide. At Comic Con last year, while promoting Death Race, Anderson said of a fourth film, “I’m talking with Sony Pictures about it. We’re in discussions to make another one, but it’s far from certain.” Then earlier this week STYD got word of an internal Sony memo that pegged the September ‘10 date for the film, which they’ve now verified is real. In addition, Milla Jovovich told paparazzi recently that “we’re going to start shooting at the end of the year.” When asked what she was referring to she said “number four”. This is what reporting on Resident Evil movies reduces us to: scrubbing back and fourth through paparazzi videos, trying to hear an inaudible question.

This is where the spoilers for Resident Evil: Extinction start, though I’m not sure anyone is too worried about it: The Russell Mulcahy film ended with Calire (Ali Larter) heading for Alaska, Alice (Jovovich) learning that her blood was the cure for the zombie T-virus, and with an army of Alice clones threatening to destroy the Umbrella Corporation’s facility in Japan, where more experimentation is planned. Back in ‘05 a fourth film, Resident Evil: Afterlife was mentioned as a possibility, with the idea that it would take place in Tokyo, and later talks suggested that Tokyo and Alaska would both be settings for the film.

  • I have always been a Resident Evil (vg) fan. But the movie is so disappointing, but im still going to watch it.

I agree completely. The movies were already so far off from the video games, I can't see more films helping it. I also think with how the last two installments of the franchise have been the movies could really use a fresh start with a fresh crew. In the right hands Resident Evil could have an amazing game to film translation. I guess this is the same case for pretty much all video game adaptations though.

The thing that angers me the most is a majority of the folks in the film industry don't have much experience with video games and I think all these shitty game to movie adaptations are giving them the wrong impression. There are many very deep, story-driven games out there that could make absolutely fantastic films if the right people got involved with it.

    Just my thoughts. : /
  • Looks like it's a tit bit cold in there.

Alaska and boobies have always been good friends.

    YEIIII!!

For such a great game, the movies are shit. Too bad they keep making them.
  • Crashlander
The irony is Resident Evil 4 is one of the best games ever made.
  • It's pretty sad, isn't it? They're going to taint the RE4 name forever...

too bad that in our economic crunch they decide to keep making new installments in failed film series. seems like the millions that will go into this thing could be used for something much better. unfortunately hollywood has been thriving off of reiterations, reboots, sequals, and adaptations. if were gonna spend this amount of money on something why not spend on some original content. this film series has not done well since the get go, why continue it. I wanna see more original works. James Cameron is doing it.

As long as they make it dumb but fun then im alright with this. Keep the acting to a minimum and focus of cool action because, lets be honest, this has nope hope of having a good story.

I liked the second film only because of the allusions to the third game. The others sucked big time.
  • Why couldn't they do a movie that was actually based on the video games? This franchise they have going sucks in comparison. I see why they did it, I mean the director said he did it so we could see a character who we had no idea was and what would happen to them. I think we all know what will happen with Alice now, she's always going to be the hero no matter what.

PWSA needs to go into a small hole, put a shotgun into his mouth and blow his fucking brains out. He is such a hack, it sickens me that people actually pay him for his worthless attempts at film making. He has completely bastardized the RE series and has absoultely no credible films under his belt. We need a new director to take this series and start from scratch, and follow the fucking video games!

A film adaption of the GAME RE4 would be amazing. But Hollywood only likes to ruin dreams and kill happiness so I assume it will never happen.
  • The only way I am watching this movie is if they put Leon in it.
  • They said that the killer from My bloody Valentine 3-d is going to be leon. Horrible idea looks nothing like leon. Might be a rumor tho
  • Yeah I heard that rumor a while when the last movie was being made. And how Leon maybe a part of it. I just love RE4 and to do Leon justice they really just need to give him his own movie. I have no problem putting up with Ashley yell "Help me Leon, Help!" Just has long has the story is good.
  • Don't really think they can take the franchise any further forward, instead this film will simply drill it further into the ground. Just like the Video Game franchise (well, the games were good fun, the films were...terrible), the Film franchise is at the end of its tether and should just bow out gracefully and quickly...

I don't understand why Anderson won't return to the directors chair. The first RE movie was solid enough, and Event Horizon is all sorts of badass, so it would be nice to see him return to what could be loosely defined as horror.

Intriguing... I am a fan of the other 3 films and I have enjoyed where this is/was going. Curious to see where it will go next. I hoping for more Zombie-fied action.

Paul Anderson should stick with the AVP franchise, those are way better..........................:/ Godamnmit Paul.

God, her nipples reach out farther then her top. Whatever, a fourth movie seems like a bad idea. I can't imagine things being profitable by the time the film is ready to be released.
  • Chris
Lets hope they actually make a decent flick this time; although, I have yet to see EXTICTION, any good?

I want to see a wall-to-wall zombie ruled world, with only a few select humans alive to take them down. think INDEPENDANCE DAY meets DAWN OF THE DEAD. Oh, and it needs to be gory as hell, think pure 80's action!
  • zachy Legend
Hey Chris, unless you've got a thousand responses to your query I can sum it up pretty quick for you... If you like the game, this is not the movie for you...It plays like 28Days/Weeks Later with Zobies running full throttle and the world a dead and desolate place, not quiet and startling scary like the games used to be. But there is some nice affects and the girls as the main source of action and leadership differs from most movies...
  • Didn't they end up in Alaska or Antartica? What kind of zombies are going to roll out of there?
  • JB
Fuc*ing zombie polar bears!!! Didn't you know?
"Polar bears are the fiercest killers in the animal kingdom"
(Cheers to Kevin Smith for that....)

  • I just remembered that she stayed behind with all of her clones. I guess it will be her army against the people who created the zombies.
  • Deezs
Nice, I enjoyed the Resident Evil movies
  • zachy Legend
Is there any way this film will be anything like the game? What happened to combing through a wrecked police station with a few moaning, shuffling zombies whilst looking for a door key? Is there any way we can replace loud explosions and crazy action for a dark and ominous piano playing? Maybe Alaska will be scarier...
  • Grayson
I very much enjoy these movies, I'm happy to see Paul W.S anderson not giving up on the franchise. You know what they don't have to follow the game at all if they did, we would know the ending already. So, for the ppl who say "make a movie based on one of the games." Your making it worse, because if they did that there would be no point to see the movie when you can play the same experience. Aswell, it would embarrase the franchise, because the story for the games is too comic bookie for a Film auidence. Finally its not what one what the video game commintuy thinks its what filmmakers and auidences think. A FILM IS A FILM and A GAME IS A GAME
  • Walter
As a fan of both the RE games and the movies I for one am glad that the movies have stayed away from the games as much as they have. If I wanted to see the games on the big screen I'll project them on my wall. I for one go to the movies to get away from myself and to enjoy a couple of hours of entertainment away from realilty. Although I hate to deal with crowds so I don't think I'll go to the opening weekend show I do know I'll see this movie as I have all the other RE movies in the theater with my friends
  • Kelvin
Hey hey. The movies are all about action and that's what it's about. So stop complaining. I'm not kidding, I liked all the movies despite weak stories. Who wants a "good" zombie story anyways? Seriously, I hope they find a town which is, of course infested with zombies and they go into a mall just to show everyone what zombie movies are supposed to be.
  • ivan
this movie better be as good as the others, the only thing i didnt like about the movie is that they completly forgot about jill valentine in the third movie! it doesnt even say what happens to her well i guess its not that bad seeing as she dissapeared while chris and her were fighting along side wesker in the spencer estate in the game and she reunited with chris...my advice is to add the rest of the characters from the game in this movie like chris and leon rebecca ada ashley barry alexia and alexander hunk would be nice to add too, the movies were great a little dissapointed that they didnt follow up the games as much but they were good i mean great movies, alice is a good add to the movies now they need to mix up the games with the movies and everything will be great! kant wait to see this movie am a big fan of both the games and the movies really exited when they added jill carlos and claire and got extatic wen they added wesker!
  • Steffan
I like the movies and the games. Doese it matter that the story doesn't follow the game. Since when did a movie adaption ever stay to the roots. As long as it's got zombies and Milla it's a winner in my book. Oh by the way the other RE films aren't flops Extinction made $150mill.

    Currently playing RE5
