Planet 51 Movie Trailer

planet_51_trailer_1

The full theatrical trailer for the animated 3D film Planet 51 has appeared at Yahoo. The film is about a human astronaut (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) who lands on an alien planet, only to discover that it looks exactly like Earth. Sure, the denizens are green aliens, but otherwise they’re just like us…and not too happy to have an alien invader in their midst. Gary Oldman, Jessica Biel, Justin Long and John Cleese are also in the voice cast. Joe Stillman (Shrek and Shrek 2, the upcoming Gulliver’s Travels) is credited with the script and Jorge Blanco, Javier Abad and Marcos Martinezare co-directed. See the trailer after the jump.

Planet 51 isn’t quite a world just like ours — more like stereotypical ’50s America, only where the women walk little alien dogs. (By which I mean zenomorph, chestbursting dogs.) The dogs are the least of astronaut Chuck Baker’s problems, though, as he’s got only three days to get back to his command module in orbit above the planet before it heads back to Earth without him. Between him and his route up to space stands a general who isn’t willing to just let him get away.

For the six people who saw Battle For Terra, this might look fairly familiar. There’s none of Terra’s ‘human invasion force’ plot (or so it seems) but there is a very similar human stranded on civilized alien world, little robot helper, young alien helping him get back to his ship, etc. But then, the idea of sticking a human astronaut on a world with a civilization that’s just as developed and slightly paranoid as ours isn’t exactly (ahem) rocket science. We’ll just disregard the fact that Battle For Terra is actually a couple years old (it showed up at TIFF in ‘07) and accept the whole thing as coincidence, since Planet 51 has been in development for quite a while.

Rover character Wall-E like? I still thinks it looks a bit better then Battle for Terra. In it's simplistic way.
  • Colonel_Kurtz
Was Battle For Terra any good at all? I kind of wanted to see it, but I kept getting this really sucky vibe about it. I almost saw it one day, but I decided to see something else once I got to the theatre, and I never even thought about it again until just now.

It had some good ideas, but wasn't great in the end. The character designs were terrible, and I'd like to say I'm forgiving enough to dismiss that, but I'd be lying.

Well, i like the animation and the trailer was alright. Maybe this movie won't be so bad.

Rover looks like what the child of Eve and Wall-E would look like if they were able to conceive.
  • Captain Awesome
Are you people serious? It resembles most of rovers Nasa has invented for years. If people really want to compare Pixar designs. Wall-E looks like a cartoon version of Johnny 5. And Eve is an iPod with blue glowing eyes.

no, no, robots are created by cloud creatures that deliver by carrier storks wearing football gear.

Is it me or does that sound nothing like "the rock"? Like, not at all.
  • Colonel_Kurtz
Yes and no. I didn't realize it was him until they said it was The Rock, but then it kind of seemed obvious.
  • Nam Ho
I watched it again to check and it still sounded nothing like him.
  • Lux
    that's right.. weird =S
  • DazedZombie
Heh, Justin Long is in both Battle For Terra and Planet 51.
  • Klinger
...what happened to The Rock's voice? It's like he pushed his testicles back up and went for the high pitch thing...?

One tiny quibble: the "Hell-ooo!" gag feels very "Dreamworks", if you know what I mean...

Other than that- looks fun, and I love Rover and the Alien dog. I'd see this.
  • I love "for the six people who saw Battle for Terra" line. bwwaahhaaahhhaaa
  • Joe
This was shown in front of Ice Age 3. Looks decent. 'Cloudy with a chance of meatballs' also had a new trailer. It looks amazing. Check it.

  • Captain Awesome
    That killed me too, lol
  • Wow, how mediocre!
  • Mike
Meh. Just another reason to love Pixar.
  • Plan 9
HAHAHAHA! Do you think the filmmakers know that the ZZ Top song they chose is about a Texas whore house? BWAHAHAHAHA!
  • CWARD321
why was THE ROCK a white guy?
  • Guest
not a big deal he just doing the voice acting.

Kratos from God of War is voice by a Black guy Terrence C. Carson
Cleveland who is black is voice by a white guy Mike Henry
Ed Wuncler III and Gin Rummy from The Boondocks are white characters but they are both been voice by Charlie Murphy and Samuel L. Jackson
  • It looks like a nice, bright, simple film that my five year old niece and seven year old nephew will enjoy, but a part from that it's nice a concept, but is definitely one for the kids.
  • Kyle
Eh, I'll give it a shot. I dont know how good it'll be though.
  • Anyone else notice that this was produced by George Harrison's Handmade Films?

Hooray! The best Beatle can give from beyond the grave!
  • STMN
