Eminem in Funny People

Eminem revealed last month that he filmed a cameo in Judd Apatow’s Funny People. Now MTV has confirmed the appearance, publishing the first photo of Marshall Mathers in the movie, chatting with Adam Sandler at a Hollywood restaurant.

What role Eminem plays in the film has yet to be revealed, but having read the script leads me to believe that he might be one of comedian/actor George Simmon’s many famous friends, of whom George must eventually reveal that he has been diagnosed with a terminal disease. It might also be possible that the Detroit rapper fills in for a scene originally written for Bruce Springsteen, where the famous music artist provides some wisdom.

When asked about working with Mathers, Apatow told MTV “I was scared to pitch jokes to him then I realized his songs are as nasty as anything that has ever been spoken. There is no way to offend him.” Head on over to MTV to read a full question and answer interview with Apatow.

I don't know what Bruce Springsteen's role was, but having seen an early cut of the movie, I'm guessing that this is the role. He certainly gives Sandler some "advice" before going on to yell at Ray Romano, which leads to one of my favorite lines in the movie (spoken by Seth Rogen). It's a weird, but hilarious cameo.

did you think this early cut was as funny as knocked up or 40 year old virgin bryan?
  • Bryan
Hard to say. Because all of the characters are mostly comedians, they are all inherently funny, but contrary to the title, this isn't really a comedy like the other apatow movies are. It is funny, bu the focus is more about the drama between characters. The characters just so happen to be funny. Kind of the opposite of the other movies where they are more comedy oriented with drama holding the jokes together, the heart of Funny People is about the drama.

It will be interesting to see what people think if they expect another 40 year old virgin. Don't get me wrong though, the movie is fantastic, and one of my favorites so far of the year. The focus is just shifted from Apatow's previous films.

But who knows. It may change quite a bit. I saw the very first screening they showed and it was 2 hours and 45 minutes long. I'm sure they are going to try to cut a good half hour off of it at least. I am interested to see how much is changed with the final edit. It was definitely long, but every scene was completely enjoyable, so I feel sorry for the editor.

Thanks for this, people who come to sites like this will know what to expect and will surely enjoy it if it's as you say it is, but the general public will likely spit it out. However, the marketing has smartly been soft, fuzzy, and largely inoffensive to avoid mimicking the gross-out comedies of Apatow past
  • barely recognized him without bruno's balls on his chin.
  • The dude
I have a feeling all the celebrity/comedian cameos will overshadow the actual movie. I hope I'm wrong
  • Jake
Yea that's what this feels like to me.
  • Mathers was pretty watchable in 8 mile, I would like to see him act some more. He is lightyears ahead of other muscians that tried a crossover. This movie looks interesting to say the least.
  • McCavelli
I agree about 8 mile, except that it wasn't like he was acting. he was just being himself. Its tough to say whether he is truly a good actor, but i would be interested to see him get a shot at a real role.
  • You sure have a lot to learn about movies bro
  • McCavelli
Yea, that's true. I don't really know anything about movies. I guess i will keep my comments to myself from now on. Sorry I didn't realize Eminem was in so many movies, or whatever is really so obvious about movies that i don't know about. God I'm dumb!! STUPID!!!! STUPID!!! STUPID!!!!! I Should have spent my life studying film and things of that nature and I would know what to say on these prestigious comment boards!! HELP ME!!!!! SHARE YOUR WISDOM!!!!!!!! Thanks bro.
  • To be fair. Your original comment was kinda ignorant
  • dannyboy
how his first comment was kinda ignorant he stating the fact i like Eminem in 8 mile but he was acting himself in that movie hopfully if he does more movies he will prove to us he cant be a true actor
  • dannyboy
sorry i mean "can" be a true actor
  • Delilah
If you think Eminem played himself in 8 mile, then you must not know anything about him in real life AT ALL.
  • luke
cant he have his own opinion he was not disrecepting eminem
  • First off, the idea that everybody is entitled to their own opinion is bullshit. Many opinions are wrong for many reasons, this guys is simply because he is uninformed. I'm not saying that Eminem can or would want to play anyone but himself, all I'm saying is that pulling off what he did in 8 Mile took a lot more work and talent than "oh, he's just playing himself."
  • luke
whats up with u i was backing u up you dont have to act like a dick
  • haha. my bad. Its just that I was defending Eminem that your comment to me is now confusing.

I still stand behind everything I said and to be fair, it wasnt really pointed at you in particular anyway.
  • Brandon
