Brad Caleb Kane Writing View-Master Movie?

viewmaster

It seems like everyweel one of the Hollywood studios announces a new board game or toy movie adaptation that pushes the limits on believability. Some nights while I’m writing up news, I wonder if I’m actually a minor character in one of those Hollywood satires that paints Hollywood executives as bumbling idiots, trying to suck onto any idea that might have audience recognition and franchise potential.

I would like to believe that the studio execs are much smarter than these type of films make them out to be. In fact, I know that, for the most part, they are much smarter than that. But every night a new new story hits my screen. Another news story that seems dumber than the one from the previous week, previous month. Stretch Armstrong, Candyland, Monopoly, Battleship, Asteroids, and now a movie based on the Viewmaster?

Apparently Fringe co-producer/writer Brad Caleb Kane will be writing a movie based on the stereoscopic Viewmaster toy for Dreamworks. Created in 1939 as a way for money challenged tourists to enjoy 3D stereo-grams of colorful and picturesque locations from around the world, the Viewmaster was later marketed as a toy in the mid-1960’s.

Brad revealed the info on Twitter, saying that he is developing the script for Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, and that the hope is for it to be in the vein of the old 1980’s Amblin movies like Goonies and Young Sherlock. No details on plot have been revealed. I would assume that the movie would probably be a 3D production since the sole purpose of the viewmaster device was to allow viewers to see images in three dimensions.

I’ll admit, it doesn’t sound quite as bad as you might initially think from the mention of “a movie based on the viewmaster”, but I still think Hollywood seriously needs to get off this toy adaptation kick soon. Also, I love the idea of Hollywood creating movie 80’s-style Amblin movies, but most of them so far have turned out like Race to Witch Mountain.

Note: Our original report mentioned that the project had something to do with aliens. We’ve since found out that is not the case.

I hope they truly capture a View-Master-made-into-a-movie experience by making a film where the audience sits down and gets to watch a different, better movie that's already out through the eyes of a View-Master, like View-Master POV or View-Master Cam.

    Brilliant.

When do we get a Chutes and Ladders movie????
  • I think i had one of these with the lion king pics. I somehow can see this as a movie more than asteroids.... but still think they are both pretty stupid

Are you fuc*ing kidding me? Is this it? This is Hollywood...bastion of art imitating life or life imitating art? You're telling me in the Internet age, Hollywood cannot find quality scripts anymore? This is it?

I'm not saying every movie has to be Schindler's List, but, holy shit on a shingle, this is just trash.

I guess after putting myself through the horrors of water boarding (seeing Transformers 2) and having that stink bomb approved, anything's possible.

Bring on "Kerplunk the movie - Revenge of the Marbles"

Of all the children's games I've seen I am surpised no-one has gone for a "Go for Broke" film which is a pretty cool concept, although already done in Brewster's Millions.

A light bulb has probably gone off over some studio exec's head after reading that.

shouldn't this news item be on "page 2"? or better yet, not mentioned, forgotten about, swept under the proverbial rug? seriously, is there any real movie news out there today?

WTF! I love Viewmaster, but a movie. Are they serious? I'd rather watch an "Operation" movie than this.

I think making a movie based on a bunch of toys/boardgames could work.... like you go to candyland with stretch armstrong and use the viewmaster to find the bad guys or some shit.... each on their own sounds even worse then my idea.

    Dear Hollywood Studio Execs,

This is kind of embarrassing, but someone has to mention it. I don't want to get anyone in trouble, but I think your assistant has gotten some of your paperwork mixed up, and it might be costing you some money. The products are supposed to pay you for placement, not vice versa. You might want to just double check what's in your new projects pile.

This whole toy phenomenon reminds me of that Robot Chicken skit about making toys into movies... and Dreamworks apparantly thinks it's brilliant.

I hope Seth Green sues some company's ass when they accidentally use an idea he's already satired.

Peter fix your typo in the first sentence before everyone wakes up!

View-master doesn't have anything to do with aliens. The alien project Kane was referring to is Uprising, which Wolfgang Petersen is directing.
  • Thanks Joe for the clarification, I have fixed the story.

Woah. Brad Caleb Kane, the musician? I love his album. He was also the voice of Aladin. This is great news.
