VOTD: Alarm

zz73c3c7a8

Everyone knows what its like to be awakened by an alarm clock before you’re ready to wake up and start the day. Director Moo-hyun Jang and independent South Korean animation team Mesai capture this feeling in a 9-minutes animated short titled Alarm. It’s hard to believe that the animation and lighting was created by such a small team. These guys have a bright future ahead of them. Watch the short after the jump.

Thanks to /Film reader D’mooN for the tip.

It is 6 AM EST and I feel the pain of this short. The pain! The pain!
  • ha, that was really enjoyable. I was shocked on how nice it looked. the fluid movement and what not, really dug it.
  • Gorgeous film to look at, nicely animated. I've had dreams where I've woken up, only to actually wake up and find myself in bed. I hate it!

Tired of the whole "it was all a dream" cliche. Film students love that shit and its FUCKING annoying.
  • I could have sworn it was pixar

I loved that. Bit long, and the joints could use some work but the rest was fantastic. I think it's on par with some of the Pixar shorts. And I personally found that more enjoyable then Partly Cloudy. That's just MY OPINION, mates.

I need to find out where i can get me some Absolut Milk. That and some Kahlua and i've got a nice morning White Russian.
  • Brilliantly animated. Annoying as hell to sit through.
  • I can relate to that movie and am sometimes glad that I no longer use this old-time alarm that I had in high school....unless it's on days when I really need to get up extra early!

I love the smooth, slick and realistic design of those images in this short. It's sweet!

I didn't think the story was very good, but the lighting and textures were AMAZING. They really captured how harsh morning sunlight can look. Weak story but a pleasure to look at.

Great fun, and as you said amazing lighting.

I agree, the lighting is awesome and the textures are wonderful.

Not only was the lighting fantastic, but the animation on the clothing and blanket were really good. Good VOTD
  • I agree. Lighting was phenomenal. Texturing too.

The animation on the cloth was probably just dynamics or nCloth simulation, though,

The lighting is awesome, yes, but to be fair they're using Global Illumination, which does all the cool bounce lighting around the apartment for you. All you need is one actual light source, in this case the window, and all the warm spill from the floor and all the light interaction between objects around the apartment is done for you. The frames take a lot longer to generate, but there's very little work involved by the artist, which is how they were able to accomplish this with a small team.
