Karl Malden Dies At 97

karl_malden

Actor Karl Malden, who achieved just about everything possible as an actor, died today at 97. Malden was from a generation of honest, muscular actors. He held his own against Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront, anchored over 100 episodes of The Streets of San Francisco and worked with dignity as a pitchman for American Express. (”Don’t leave home without it.”)

Malden hadn’t worked regularly since the early ’90s, but he remained representative of genuine actors who could embody a wide range of characters, and who found success without matinee idol looks. He was equally committed to his work whether being directed by Elia Kazan (Streetcar, Waterfront), Dario Argento (Cat O’ Nine Tails) or Franklin J. Schaffner (Patton). We need a lot more faces and personalities like his, and he will be missed.

Hollywood is cursed. It must be. So many famous people are dying this month!

    R.I.P. Karl Malden
  • I once did the monolouge from On the Waterfront that he delivered down at the docks. What an actor. A true shame. But he had lived a long (certainly at 97!) life and although he will be missed, I'm glad to see he lived a fruitful life.
  • I had forgotten he was still around. At 97, it isn't as big a tragedy as 50 (Billy Mays and Michael Jackson).
  • You should seriously consider speaking at this dudes funeral.

IMHO, Billy Mays was the biggest loss. I'm gonna miss that guy.

My parents have fond memories of those movies... none of which I've seen. I do respect it though, may peace be with you.

I used to watch reruns of The Streets of San Francisco with my dad all the time when I was a kid. And then when i got into movies, and watched Streetcar, it was "oh look! the guy from Streets of San Fran!".

    RIP Karl Malden.

Great actor. He will be missed.
  • he was a great, fantastic actor who could deliver emotions in his monologues. I first saw him in A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE and ON THE WATERFRONT.

    RIP...
  • It took 'em a while but those gangsters finally got to that nice meddling priest
  • The man who made the statement of the 50's; "Poker should not be played in a house full of women!" :D 'A Streetcar Named Desire', 'On The Waterfront' and the role that springs straight to mind (maybe because I watched it the other day), Malden as Harvey in the 'Birdman of Alcatraz'. RIP.

I just heard the news this morning. He was self-deprecating. A wonderful presence on-screen. I recently saw him in "The West Wing."

    A great loss.
