Jessica Biel In Talks For Thor?

biel_face

According to an unnamed source who spilled to Nuke The Fridge, Jessica Biel is currently negotiating a role in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor. If true, and let’s pretend for a moment that it is, this would seem to simultaneously stomp on the rumour that Natalie Portman was up for the female lead and those never ending Jessica Biel Wonderwoman stories (though stomping on those is rather like stomping on mist and just about as necessary). Who would she play? There’s a handful of options but other information on the film would seem to suggest it isn’t Nurse Jane Foster.

In the comics, Foster is the carer and lover of Donald Blake, the human alter ego of Thor. Seeing as Blake is persistently rumoured to not be part of the movie, or (according to some gossip) if he will appear it will only be at the very end, then I’d imagine Foster is a real long shot. Furthermore, Nuke the Fridge’s source claims that Biel will be playing “the same female character from the animated Hulk vs Thor,” of which there were actually two.

The first of those was Sif, an Asgardian warrior who would provide a pretty straight up love interest for the behammered one. The second was Amora the Enchantress, one of Thor’s ‘villains’. With Loki in place as the key antagonist, I fancy Sif the slightly more likely choice.

Having said that, Biel looks somewhat more like Amora than she does Sif, at least in the incarnations I’m more familiar with. What do you think about Jessica Biel: more a lover or a fighter?

There’s an outside chance, of course, that Biel will be signed up for Amora and Portman will play Sif. That’s gonna shift a few posters.

Biel’s last few pictures have met some rather disappointing ends with Next and I Now Declare You Chuck and Larry displeasing just about everybody, Easy Virtue being somewhat underplayed, Nailed getting shutdown, shutdown, shutdown and then, very possibly, just shelved and Powder Blue going straight to DVD. She could use a little Norse godliness in her life, I think.

Is she going to play Thor?
  • When I think of the lovely Ms. Biel, I think of perfectly-toned and tanned gluteal muscles, and the death of the Blade franchise. But mostly the glutes, so thanks for the rumors. She'd make a great... oh, wow... those are nice...
  • She's an alright actress, I think she might do well in this one.

Loki and the Enchantress were often a team. At least in early Avengers/Thor. Not sure about recent stuff. Wouldn't count out the Enchantress at all just because Loki is the main villain.

I couldn't reach my comics expert to fill in the blanks in my Thor-knowledge. Thanks for the extra info.

For now the casting is quite good.

But Biel? hmm can't really say anything, like you said her last movie wasn't all that.

For Portman, I hope the rumour is true.

I think this movie will be EPIC!
  • Please no. Just like Jessica Alba and Megan Fox, Jessica Biel is all looks, no talent. Some might say she is the Channing Tatum of actresses.

Please get Portman, Branagh. At least she can act AND look good.
  • Isaac
"Good," of course, being a complete understatement
  • You're are 100% right. I misspoke.

    Stunning is much more appropriate.

My apologies to Ms. Portman and men everywhere who were upset or offended by my callus statement
  • Johnny Boy
Beil is a million times better than Alba and Fox. She's a good actress with a shitty agent.
  • Name a single movie with Jessica Biel that made you stop and say, "wow, she was truly great in that movie, even if the rest of the movie sucked."

Now do the same thing with Natalie Portman. You are guaranteed to find quite a large disparity between the two.

Fox and Alba may be too tough a comparison. A fairer comparison would be with Jennifer Garner, and, if memory serves, she already ruined the film franchise of a beloved Marvel heroine.
  • Josh
If she was Channing Tatum of actresses than you would be implying that she was a good actress. I think most people consider Tatum to be a good actor. Just look at A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints and Stop Loss for the proof. Have you seen The Illusionist and Easy Virtue. Biel is great in both. She is head and shoulders above Alba and Fox.
  • You are honestly the only person I have ever heard from that has called Channing Tatum a good actor. In films such as Step Up, Step Up 2, She's The Man, and (presumably) GI Joe, Tatum is only challenged by Hayden Christensen in the category of "Best Impersonation of A Tree." As for the films you mentioned (neither of which, I should mention, I have seen), none of the reviews I read about them mention Tatum's performance, presumably because his role was not worth noting or exemplary in any form.

Getting back to Biel, I have not seen The Illusionist yet, but I have seen Easy Virtue and, suffice it to say, I wish I hadn't.
  • I should also add that I rescinded by comment about Alba and Fox, substituting with Jennifer Garner, who is almost as useless.
  • Josh
Have you seen A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints? He is remarkable in that film. In fact A.O. Scott compared him to a young Brando in his review.

What is your problem with Jennifer Garner? Did you see Juno? Alias? The Kingdom?
  • Unlike Tatum, I have had the displeasure of seeing a great deal of Jennifer Garner's filmography and it is an exercise in blah. Discounting her roles in such films as Pearl Harbor, 13 Going on 30, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Elektra and Daredevil, even the "good" material she is in is below par.

While the blame can greatly lie on Diablo Cody, Garner's character in Juno was just terribly constructed. We spend 3/4 of the movie thinking of her as an uptight bitch and then she is the hero at the end with no personality change? I'm sorry, that is not how a character arc is supposed to work.

As for The Kingdom, once again, Garner is just blah. She is overshadowed at every point by Jamie Foxx and the rest of her co-stars.

I save Alias for last because it actually proves my point. All said and done, Garner was a face, not an actress, and everyone involved knew it. All you have to do is look at the MANY costume changes in each episode to figure that one out. The show as a whole is overhyped by JJ Abrams fanboys and in no way displays that Jennifer Garner is a good actress. She can stick to dumb rom-coms that I won't watch.

    Well.....Well......Well - agree to a point!

Yeah, I remember watching A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints and I can confirm that Channing Tatum can act (not just a pretty boy floyd (director wasn't stupid in casting him in that part even though it is an extremely small part still in Public Enemies and most reviews say it should have been a bigger part as although in briefly he still made an impression and could have offered more)).

I also remember at the time I read some reviews saying he should have been nominated for an oscar (yes - I am serious), he was that great. Oh yeah, the film picked up Special Jury Prize(for the ensemble performance) @ Sundance Film Festival at that time.

Seriously, anyone who hasn't seen this film or Stop Loss should watch both films as his performance is great.

Call me silly, if he is such a bad actor (don't agree - a rising star for sure - he seems to be everywhere lately) why are directors like Kevin MacDonald to star in Eagle of the North (main lead) and Oliver Stone currently on hold (just on hold) Pinkville wanting to work with him (again main lead).

By the way, in terms of GI Joe, I think the die hard fans (or general fans of movies) are afraid it will be bad because it is the first time seeing the GI Joe's but from what I can see via the trailers the film looks great, if you give it a chance whether a Channing Tatum fan or not.

I have a funny feeling he will gain more fans because of this film (if the public is willing to take a chance on another blockbuster and make it a hit, me thinks the die hard fans will complain but still make it a HIT), if you don't take the film to seriously and just enjoy it for the popcorn factor after all it is about TOYS no oscar performances needed here just pure fun action.

Regarding Jennifer Garner.....still not sure but I haven't seen Juno. In terms of Alias it is not exactly a stretch is it? However, anyone is better than Megan Fox, gosh that girl is truly a bad actress.

    Anyway, that's my opinion.....bbbbyyyyeeeeeee!!!!

Tatum is only challenged by Hayden Christensen in the category of "Best Impersonation of A Tree."

    Hahahaha :) Thats awesome.

Portman could be be Jane Foster, she already has the look. I doubt she'd play an Asgardian, they would need someone more statuesque. Someone like Jessica Biel. Only problem I dont think she has the chops to pull of a role like that without making it campy.
  • Khuzud
Feige has said already that Donald Blake isn't going to be in the movie so I don't think Jane Foster is going to be in it.
  • Djangloo
Which I still think is complete B.S. because the lessons of all these comic movies and even Trek is that you NEED NEED NEED an earth-based, human story upon which to anchor the imaginative, mind blowing fx driven stuff that is comics & sci-fi lore.

I must admit, I'm still not sold on the guy playing Thor, and was 100% gunning for the Skarsgard father son team until they made the announcment.

As for Biel - the Enchantress? She's a bit too much of a jock to play a convincing villain.

Even as a lifelong comics fan, I'm not up enough on my Thor Lore to know what good-girl she could play, but I'd say she has to play a good girl warrior woman type, and not a villain.

If you ask me, Branagh's got his work cut out for him!
  • mchops
No Portman. She already sucked in Star Wars even though I loved Garden State. Biel would be perfect because we've already seen her get tough in Blade Trinity.
  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but are you trying to say that something positive came out of Blade Trinity? Because I have to sincerely disagree.
  • Josh
I thought she was perfectly acceptable in the role. It wasn't a good movie but I would not blame the acting.
  • jb
    I'd hit it fo' sure.

Def wouldn't mind some reverse cowgirl.
  • kroq
I'm more inclined to believe Biel would take a role in this film than Portman whose plate is already full for the next 2 years or so. Portman's got that Aronofsky project as well as that Brad Pitt romantic comedy in the works. Aren't they filming Thor in the near future?
  • Colonel_Kurtz
Natalie Portman doesn't need to be doing a romcom. She's too good for Brad Pitt anyway. Waaay out of his league. Jessica Biel would make a great match for Brad!
  • Tim
Hmm...Wonderwoman? I don't know if she could carry that. But Biel could be a nice addition to Thor.
  • MissMe
Bile is a terrible actress and is even WORSE in action movies. The only reason anybody likes her is because she has a pretty face (in some people's opinion - not mine!) and boobs.

I have been happy with all the other casting for this movie. Please please PLEASE do not let her have any part!! Ruin will befall you if you do...
  • mercury419
If DC get off their butts, Biel would be an AWESOME Hawk Girl!
  • fuman
I'm sure Jessica Biel will be perfect for the role of Sif, i can't wait to see her again in an action film. She started with Blade Trinity and Stealth i'm sure she will do better in this film.

After receiving good review in acting in the film The Illusionist, she will be a great add up to the casts..can't wait to watch the film now!
