Every other major British actor seems to have a part in the Harry Potter series, so why not Bill Nighy? The actor tells The Independent that he’s just nabbed a part in the final film(s) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Who’s he going to play? Speculation and possible spoilers run rampant after the jump.

Assuming the quote is correct, Nighy didn’t tell the paper exactly what role he’s got.

I don’t think I’m allowed to say it but I’m going to be in the next Harry Potter film. I won’t say which character, but he’s a goodie. I just got the gig.

But the speculation (in outlets like Empire) is currently that he’ll be playing new Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour, who succeeds previous Minister Cornelius Fudge in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. (That event evidently doesn’t happen in the film version of Half-Blood Prince, or not explicitly.)

Before his appointment as Minister, Scrimgeour headed the Auror Office in the ministry, and his scarred, tough appearance is described as being like “an old lion with tawny hair and bushy eyebrows, with yellow eyes and wire-rimmed spectacles,” according to Wikipedia. The role wouldn’t give Nighy a lot of screen time, but he’d have a few scenes where he tries to build some public support for the ministry by convincing Harry to take action that implies he supports the office’s fight against Voldemort, and has some conflict with Dumbledore, who opposes the idea. Scrimgeour’s final scenes in the story should be fairly dramatic, as the character is tortured in an attempt to gain information about Harry.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is filming now, so we could concievably see shots of Nighy in action very soon.

  • Fucking epic!!!
  • Meli_V
Fantastic. He'll make a wonderful addition to an already great cast.
  • How will he be able to top his performance in G-Force!?
  • chris
I am not sure he is cast as Scrimgeour. Though that is who I always pictured him playing. Scrimgeour dies fairly early in the book.
    Possible characters he could play:
    - the dark wizard Grindelwald (Dumbeldore's friend and first nemesis)
    - Aberforth Dumbledore (although I hear CiarĂ¡n Hinds is playing that part, which would be a great choice too)
    - Xenophilius Lovegood (Luna's father)
    - the wandmaker Gregorovitch
  • CheshireAna
Now that you mention it, I'd really love to see him as Luna's father.
  • Joe
If he played Luna's dad, that would be amazing. A magical version of his role in Children of Men? Awesome!
  • Sketch
Uh you're prolly thinking of Michael Caine? Bill's not in that one.
  • Sketch
I was thinking Luna's father as well.
  • EvanJDeBiase
as for grindelwald, he said he's a goodie, so thats out
  • Meli_V
Grindelwald has already been cast - Jamie Campbell has the role.
I think Nighy would make a wonderful Xenophilius Lovegood and I think that role has yet to be cast.
  • theAguilar
Jamie Campbell Bower is obviously (unless you have no idea who he is) young and unless they implement the technology to have him play the young and old version of Grindelwald, he's just set to play the character when he was Albus's friend.

As for Xenophilius Lovegood, it has been reported that Rhys Ifans is slated to play the character. Bill Nighy would make a better Scrimgeour than Xenophilius because Ifans has that quirky look while Bill lacks it a bit.
  • Swarley
Xenophilius was my first thought when I read his name too.
  • Zach
Most of the the stuff you mentioned takes place in Half-Blood Prince. If the character isn't in HBP, it wouldn't surprise me if he isn't in DH either.
  • It's about time!
  • Peter R
I disagree. Until Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie and why not Craig Fergusun are in Harry Potter every British actor does not have a part. But Bill rocks socks.
  • CyT
Ive never understood how Stephen Fry has never been in a Harry Potter movie. There is something about him that would work so well in a wizarding world!
  • Yes.. I am not a fan of these movies really, but when this comes out I want to see his performance. Anything with the Nigh is at least worth checking out.
  • Great news. Same with myself, I'm not a Harry Potter fan but I have seen some of the movies. They are enjoyable. Nighy is amazing! I'll be sure to check this one out.
  • He's totally Luna's father. I can't imagine him not being him.
  • MickJ
Nighy is the man. He can do whatever he wants.

    *spoilers*

"...has some conflict with Dumbledore, who opposes the idea..."

-dumbledore's dead? how can they conflict?

love nighy, seeing him as luna's dad would be cool too.

I'm completely amazed that none of the comments so far are people flaming Harry Potter. Thank God for small miracles.

I love Bill Nighy as an actor and would love to see him added to the cast.

For my money, he's going to be Lovegood. Scrimgeour seems like too minor a role, although I think he would be perfect in anything.
  • almost665evil
I thought Rhys Ifans was cast as Lovegood. I'd put my money on Nighy playing the new minister.
  • Joshua Ruth
You're right. I just an interview with Ifans that confirms it.
    It's gotta be Scrimgeour, then.

I'm pretty disappointed the new "other" minister won't be in HBP. I thought that opening scene with the Britain's PM and Fudge would have been a great way to start the film. I guess they could still do that scene without Rufus Scrimgeour but since I've heard the first 13 minutes are in 3-D, they'll probably start with a bang and open with the dementor attack on the bridge.

Thanks for the info. I didn't even know Rhys Ifans was cast in this. I always pictured Xenophilius Lovegood as a bit older, but I may have just read that wrong.
  • Joshua Ruth
    I just READ an interview...
    Sorry
  • I kid you not, earlier today we were watching Order of the Phoenix on cable, and my boyfriend said how the only awesome British actor we could think of, who hadn't been in a Harry Potter movie, was Bill Nighy. Eerie.
  • Enthropii
If only the movie doesn't screw up...
  • Chris
Bout time he signed up -- If the series had finished without him appearing in one of the films it would ahve been a crime!
  • Rhys Ifans is already Xenophilus, so that part is out. He's Scrimgeour for sure. He's who I pictured when I read the book at any rate. And I know David Yates has been wanting to cast him for some time. He's a perfect Scrimgeour. The end of chapter 8 (which concerns Scrimgeour) in the book was one of the scariest things I've ever read. If they keep it in the film word for word, everyone in the theater is going to pee their pants.
  • tom
Magnus Stingledorfer or Professor Licorice Van Stamplemire. Possibly Thaddeus Donglefluffer.

    This is good news.
  • OOOOOOhohohoh!!!....I know!!! his going to be Albus Dumbledore's Brother Aberforth Dumbledore
  • Tukie
the character of Scrimgeour is in half blood prince... so that would be nighy woudl be inteh 6th film too... which he isnt. Its likely that he is playing mr. Lovegood
  • caleb savage
went film come out cinemas thank you Caleb Savage
  • plagueoftruth
If you're asking when the film is coming out, it's summer of 2010. Probably July.
  • plagueoftruth
Actually I made a mistake on that. Deathly Hallows part one comes out late 2010, probably November and then part two will be summer of 2011.
