Do you want a sequel to The Goonies? Really? Well, you might be in luck. The original’s scriptwriter Chris Columbus has been speaking to Sci-Fi Wire about the possible new picture, revealing that Joe Pantoliano, who is starring in Columbus’ Percy Jackson and was Francis Fratelli in the original Goonies, has had some relevant chatter with Richard Donner. Quotes on that coming up after the break, as well as Columbus’ rather glib proposal on what adventure the next gen Goonies could face.

Here’s Columbus:

[Joe Pantoliano] said that Richard Donner talked to him about six months ago about the sequel. I think the only way it could be done is if the kids are now the parents, and their kids have become the Goonies. I still think the two brothers are still alive and well, so they could still be in the movie. So it’s a matter of whether or not they could re-create that concept.

Doesn’t exactly sound like the hardest concept to ‘re-create’. But should they even try? Columbus himself suggests that the brand of adventure in the original Goonies film might not be completely relatable to a modern audience of tweens because nobody these days ventures outdoors and away from their X-Box:

Maybe if all the parents in the new Goonie movie forbid their kids to play on the Internet, that’s gotta be the plot. You can’t go anywhere near a computer or cell phone. I guess the adventures are online.

I don’t know about where you live, but I see kids playing outside pretty much every day. Climbing trees, even. Guess I’m lucky…?

Richard Donner certainly still seems keen to get the Goonies mobile rolling again. I could care less if it happens - Ive seen the original twice, when younger, and that was at least two times too many. Perhaps some serious talent attached to script or direct (ie. you can stay keen, Mr. Donner, but you can also stay away from the megaphone) would sway me. And I don’t know that yet another kids on adventure plot would be as appealing as seeing all the original stars forced back into the ‘adventure’ yet again.

The Goonies is amazing - shame on for not appreciating it, even in your youth. How could you not love it?
Though a sequel would suck. The anticipation and expectations would build up excitement but the film would fall flat a la Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull debacle.

"I could care less if it happens - Ive seen the original twice, when younger, and that was at least two times too many"

    Are you serious!

This is the one of most fun movies produced in our generation.
  • i would love to see a big screen sequel to the goonies then a straight to dvd one.

you know how I know you're gay? You didn't like the effin' Goonies.... Good Lord, man!
  • Tbone78
I loved The Goonies as much as the anyone else who is old enough to appreciate it does. Come on though. How many sequels/retreads do we need of these 1980s properties? I feel like this whole 80's nostaligia craze has lasted longer then the actual 1980s.

Brendon Connelly likes Diary of the Dead, but hates The Goonies. Seems his opinion is about on par with Armand White.

That said, I don't really need this sequel. I don't really want a new group of kids. I would almost rather see the original cast get back together and have some kind of adventure that sheds light on their adulthood the way that the original shed light on their childhood.

If you don't like it, why did you watch it a second time?
  • BrendonConnelly
Good question, simple answer - it was a school screening. But I have watched a few films I don't like multiple times, and sometimes because I wanted a better look at them.
  • Brian
Wow, you dont like the Goonies? Good God. You must like movies about gay cowboys eating pudding.
  • I do NOT want a sequel to one of my most favourite films of the 1980s. Please, just leave it alone. The sequel would be too painful to watch and it's just not going to be the same.
  • I feel like maybe the reason you didn't connect with the original could be that it's a very 'American' movie? I know I don't 'get' a lot of 'English' vibes. I try and I try, but I just don't sometimes (at least as a kid I wouldn't, I do a lot more now).

Wow. As a gay Goonies lover, I am alienated by both the post and the comment board. Screw you all.

I vote for no sequel, btw.

the ONLY way to do a goonies sequal is to have it an adventure with the original characters as adults! They are the characters we love, not their spawn. Doing some knock off with their kids lacks imaginations and totally ignores the fact that the reason we love the original Goonies is because of the characters. To do some sequal that barely features the original cast flies in the face of the ONLY reason to do a sequal in the first place. Original cast as adults or nothing!

I suppose that all the love "The Goonies" gets is because of nostalgia, because it can't be because it's actually, you know, good. People saw it at a certain, shall we say, less discerning, age, and are now blind to its true quality.

Donner's real hit-and-miss as a director. It was telling that, after gaining almost legendary status as the way the movie should have been made, when his cut of "Superman II" finally showed up, it really wasn't all that much.

He's not the real problem here, of course. The real problem is Chris Columbus can't write for sour owl poop, and he later became a competent director only in the sense of competency meaning that you know to point the camera at the actors and press the "on" button. He has all of Spielberg's worst traits and none of his more interesting ones.

Maybe history could repeat itself and Charles Haas could write a "Goonies" sequel. It wouldn't be the first time he's written a superior sequel to a Columbus concept, but I think it's better if the whole thing just stayed a pleasant memory for some people, and something for everyone else to forget.

That's a great comment, Mike. I think you're pretty much speaking for me there.

If Chris Columbus does a screenplay for Goonies 2, count me in!! Chris Columbus is a genius, he wrote the original goonies, he directed home alone, he directed the 1st 2 harry potter movies which were the best, he is a born storyteller! If they do it the right way with Donner and Columbus on board, than a sequel would be great. Lets hope it happens this way.... before Warner Brothers decide to get cheap and pull a lost boys 2 on us.

I saw an eight year old driving a purple electronic scooter. Driving it.
When I was growing up we had "My Buddy" and Big Wheels... and Nerf Fencing.

As long as Sloth comes back... something like he ages at a decelarated rate- then this project shoulod get the green-light.

Aw man .. Goonies is in my top 10 films of all time. There are so many fun quotes in that film and its a good honest movie about adventure from a kids perspective. I didnt realise anyone didnt like it, your the first I have encountered Brendon...
On the sequel, I simply think its too late now... the way I would see it possibly working is that the now adult Goonies discover something else is still in one eyed willy's cave and somehow their kids of today wind up going on adventure to rescue it. And whilst on the adventure they have a tongue in cheek payouts about kids from the 80's thinking this kinda thing is cool .. but ironically they are having a great time, however, the parents are even more excited than the kids about reminiscing over their last adventure... but even that is pretty thin.

"Ive seen the original twice, when younger, and that was at least two times too many."

Brendon, I have something to tell you. Your heart was missing when you were born. In its place is a stone surrounded by ice.
  • Hell no to a Goonies sequel. Might as well remake the f*cking thing and be done with it.
  • I loved the Goonies when I was a kid and I love it now. I own it on DVD and watch it whenever I get nostalgic. I'm about the same age as most of the cast-Sean Astin is a year older-and have found myself wondering what would have become of Mikey, Mouth, Data,Chunk and the rest including Sloth.

If there is a sequel I'll welcome it with open arms. I think Richard Donner should try to get Steven Spielberg in on it. With the exception of the latest Indiana Jones, Spielberg hasn't done a family film in awhile. At least with him on board Donner will be off to a good start. Too bad I don't know Richard Donner personally or how to contact him because I've got a pretty good idea for a plot.

For anyone that reads this site regularly they will know not to take this guy's opinion on anything. Most of the time he just embarrasses himself with his dumb, against the grain, indy minded, small brained, snotty garbage opinion. Brendon can't even take his head out of his ass for even a minute and appreciate a chidren's classic before CGI and Pixar was even a thought.

I guess this moron thinks it's cool to not like something everyone likes. Dummy.
  • By reading you say seeing the Goonies two times was two times too many, you will never have any credibility to me ever again.
  • 'The Goonies' is an obligatory statement on any child's youthful years - we all have seen it, we all loved it, and we all don't want to see another poor/pointless remake or sequel(if you didn't see it as a child...shame on you!).
  • angrymoor
The Goonies is my all favorite 80s movie. The sequel is a bad idea.
  • john huhman
ever since i heard that there was a possibility that there could be a goonies sequel, i have been very excited. it was released the same year that i was born and it is still one of my favorite movies of all time. it would be very cool to see a sequel even if it was just straight to dvd i would definitely buy it. i just hope that it does happen.
  • goonies was a bad movie - and when I say bad I mean fricken AWESOME! you're darn right a sequel is in order. don't tell me you cAn't get feldmAn and plympton. what have they done for me lAtely? and the kids that played data and chunk? they're probably teaching middle school or managing a video store together.
