ramon_rodriguez

When Michael Bay gets around to the next Transformers movie (and I expect it will be his next film, a year spent trying to get a ’smaller’ picture off the ground possibly coming to nothing quite in time) there could be a beefier role for Ramon Rodriguez, Revenge of the Fallen’s conspiracy nut Leo Spitz. There’s a piece at the LA Times’ Hero Complex blog today profiling the young actor, who does seem to be having a real growth spurt in his career right now. The story was written by Geoff Boucher who reports that Michael Bay “hinted” to him that TF3 would see Rodriguez step up to a bigger role. More immediately amusing, however, was Rodriguez’ description of his audition for this current Transformers film…

Rodriguez said:

For 90 minutes, he had me jumping, running, diving over the furniture in his office — that was the audition. I was drenched in sweat. He told me, ‘OK, hide behind the desk!’ ‘Now, run over here!’ And man, I was looking in his eyes, and he was enjoying it. He’s got a passion for action. It shows in the movies too.

He’s definitely got a passion for amusing auditions and screentests. You can check out a video of Megan Fox discussing her rather odd initial try-out for Bay in my post about the Revenge of the Fallen press conference from last week.

These screen tests might start to develop a cult following by reputation alone. Here’s hoping they turn up on one of the eventual Transformers DVD or Blu-Ray reissues. I wonder what he had Shia do? What is Shia’s thing? It used to be he was great at being the nervy, twitchy little-brother geek, a la Even Stevens, but as he’s matured I’ve found it hard to see just what he excels at any more. He’s grown out of his niche.

A bigger role for Rodriguez in the next picture could spell less screentime for Megan Fox. I suspect that’s the way both she and Bay would really like it. But Fox dialed down, Rodriguez dialed up - I don’t know how happy the teenage gearheads still lining up for this second picture would be about that particular transformation.

He was hilarious, so I wouldnt mind

um... shouldn't these responses be about bay's directing style? "hide behind a desk"??? "run over here"???? are you serious? that's the most retarded thing i've ever heard. i know we shouldn't expect much because it's michael bay, but we should fucking demand it because it's michael bay. he has to grow up and be a real director.
  • Reaper
um... shouldn't these comments be about a bigger part in the next sequel for "Leo Spitz"
  • autobotsordertakeout
sadly he served no fukking damn purpose sam witwicky could have known to look for the last sectorseven dude all by himself so no he wasnt important at all\
  • drchicago
Well Sam already knew John Turturro's character so yeah they could have set been brought together easily without having him in the movie.
  • Reaper
Nigger, WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU!!!
  • Really? This would be almost as bad making the movie focus on the restarted robot twins.

Michael bay needs to focus on what he does well, blow shit up. Don't bother with a story, or even human characters, just show a bunch of robots beating the crap out of each other and making things go BOOM!!!
  • GreatBigLion
I've yet to see Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, but my friend who has said that Megan Fox seemed bored throughout. Maybe Megan Fox is tired of being the paper-thin eye candy? If she stepped down for Transformers 3 on her own choice, then she'll gain more respect in my eyes; I want her to try out different roles. That's the only way we'll see if she has any real skill.
  • BrendonConnelly
She's talked about the film in a way that suggests she wants to do better things.
  • quintushalls
We'll see what Bay does about her screen time after the release of Jennifer's Body
  • sean
damn, that blows. when turturro tased him i almost cheered knowing i wouldnt have to hear his ass for a few minutes
  • Michael
Amen! Leo and Alice were the two weakest performances in the film (my opinion) and I'd hate to see either return for number three.
  • tHE
For real. People actually liked this kid???? The second I realized he was going to end up being in the rest of the film, I got pretty psst off. More humans = Less robots.

Also more explosions = less robots but that's a rant for another day.
  • Corey
Ugh, he was entirely superfluous, completely annoying and entirely unfunny. Actually, it's probably not the actor's fault, but his character was worse than the Twins, and THEY were awful!
  • Andy
"entirely superfluous, completely annoying and entirely unfunny"

You just described the entire movie.
  • tom.
I'm surprised you didn't mention how terrible Rodriguez was in that film.
  • abergamo
Hopefully whatever new screenwriters Paramount gets to write this 3rd installment will make Rodriguez's character much better/more interesting/so we actually care about him. I really wanted him to get sucked up by Devastator in ROTF.
  • Jake Sully
Revenge of the Fallen was better than The Godfather....seriously. Transformers 3 will be better than Gone With the Wind.
  • Burf
    0/10
  • Danisgod6491
I hate thet Godfauther asb much as the next person, but RoTF sucked worse or just about as much then any film starring Paris hilton
  • vladimus
The whole time I saw Ramon in the movie I kept thinking about how much more awesomer it would be if it was Jonah Hill instead. Actually, the character probably still would have sucked but at least he'd have been funnier.
  • DrChicago
Yeah that sounds great, it makes perfect sense to give more screen time to one of the most annoying characters put on screen this year.
  • tHE
    ^I love it.
  • jason B
RR was the only part of the film that bugged me. i found him mind-numbingly annoying and was hoping he'd be gone come TF3. i'll defend every single part of TF2, but i just can't get behind this guy or his performance.
  • Michael Bay Sucks
For Transformers 3, Michael Bay has asked Ramon Rodriguez for a list of 80s metal songs that they could play as a background during a chase scene involving 2 autobots in blackface.

Bay originally decided on using Poison's "Unskinny Bop..." but really wanted Rodriguez's opinion about using Whitesnake's "Still of the Night."

He also wanted to know how many sweeping camera shots of the 2015 Chevrolet Volt should be used in the sequence when Rodriguez would potentially be riding on the windshield.
  • michael
i agree he was so effing funny so i wouldnt mind that at all...he stole a lot of the movie
  • hayward
your avatar is my exact face when i read your post.
  • BrendonConnelly
And, funnily enough, the same was probably true for Michael when he read yours.
  • sean
    yeah, really funny Brendon!!!!!!!!
  • oats
Brendon with a zinger! ZOMG that was hilariouz
  • TheDaftPunk
    Bigger role? BIGGER ROLE?!!?!?

His character contributed absolutely NOTHING to this movie. In fact, he detracted from it, as the "humor" he provided was stupid, pointless, and like many other things in the movie, restricted GOOD things - like showing the new Transformers.

This is ridiculous. We're never going to get a good Transformers movie as long as the same "creative" team is involved.
  • hayward
    UGH.

    just... UGH.
  • Solid
I thought he was surprisingly good with what little role he played in the movie, but much like the other new human characters added to the first movie, he doesn't need to come back really. Bay's taking things in the right direction by focusing more on the robots than the humans. Frankly it feels like bay's terribly bored with his own movie whenever he has the camera on anything that isn't exploding or a giant robot, and I frankly feel his pain. But that's not his fault, the best transformers series is actually the one that didn't have any humans in it. By following G1, Bay and co. have restricted themselves to that story's limitations, which is that it takes place during modern day with humans running around in it and of course they get caught up in the war between the Autobots and decpticons. Less puny stupid humans is what TF3 needs. Make it explore Cybertron, the history of the transformers, of which there is LOADS. I mean come on, we discover we're not alone in this universe and we don't send explorers to this new planet? Oh you know what? The 3rd movie should be a reverse of the first. Have some kid robot on Cyberton get his first human!
  • Ultima
About your comment on the explorers. They wouldn't be able to go there for two reasons: 1. We, humans, don't know where Cybertron is and 2. Cybertron is destroyed, it has been for thousands of years according to the first movie. It would be great if they introduced New Cybertron though.
  • JoShmo
Annoying doesn't begin to describe this guy. I wanted him dead throughout the whole movie. He wasn't funny at all. The scene he first meets Sam I kept thinking, "I hope this is his only scene". Let's hope this is just a rumor.
  • Craigasorusrex
I actually think the actor is decent. Its that the character that was written for him was complete shit. Most of his jokes or funny actions were either hit or miss for me.
  • Andrea
Well i have nothing against Ramon..but i didn't like him that much in the movie! ..He like stole the funny part from Shia! They let Sam(Shia) being less funny then the first movie and put like 70% of the funny parts to Ramon that Shia should have! i didn't like that! So i want less Ramon and more Shia! <3 I thought like yess..he didn't steal Mikaela from Sam in this movie so i hope he will not be in the third movie..So i still hope i won't see him in the next movie! Like what should he do?!..The lead male part is Shia and than comes Josh...and then Tyrese..so just BACK OFF!
  • quatrecents
I found it incredibly surreal that Omar from The Wire's boyfriend popped up in transformers.
  • Bringing this guy back?? Really?? He was like the jar jar binks of the transformers universe highly annoying and zero character depth . He was like any other annoying college kid nothing special and had no real reason to be in the movie but annoy the hell out of you .
  • Chris
he was far from the worst thing in TF2. The movie was an epic failure on so many levels that I have zero interest in what bay pull's off with TF3.

I say brong the guy back have him be the love interest for Foxs' character, thats about as creative as the writers seem to be with the franchise! which is not very!
  • hisensei808
Bring him back, Bring back bigger and better effects, but most importantly... Bring a story. And lay off the sex jokes. Robots don't have sex with humans.
  • Yeah, because THAT will help the already doomed Transformers 3... more bad casting.
  • GregoryV
I'm waiting for M-Bay to bring back Rachael Taylor.
  • All Leo (Ramon) did in the second 'Transformers' film was continually make reference to the fact that he shouldn't have been involved (and he was to bridge the weak gap between Sam going to college and the rest of the story) and look scared, nothing more. Now I imagine Bay would sign him up for the same thing except if he's in a bigger role, to do more of the above, and I honestly don't want to be watching that pointless, annoying, unfunny style of performance again...
  • topheavy
Might as well make Tf3 about unicorns that shoot rainbows out of their yahoo's... people will buy anything.
  • jp
i kept hoping they would leave him behind everytime they had the opportunity, but they didn't. The worst character of the movie.
  • Facebook User
When he got tased I clapped so loud. I thought he was out of the picture, but then came back two minutes later. Couldn't stand this guy. I would almost prefer giving the twins a bigger role.
  • Joe Piscapo
They made Shia eat a bucket of shit and watch the bits of Sixteen Candles with John Cusack in.

    then Michael Bay ejaculated.
