I don’t put much stock in movie nostalgia, but I still remember how thrilled I was by my first viewing of Delicatessen over fifteen years ago. Even with the weak elements of the movie taken into consideration, the world realized within is still one I like going back to. So I’ve been eager for actual footage from Micmacs A Tire-Larigot, the first film from Jean-Pierre Jeunet since 2004’s A Very Long Engagement. And now thanks to Twitch we have a teaser, after the jump.

The film is being called a satire on the world arms trade. (And hopefully a better one than, say, Nic Cage’s Lord of War.) Dany Boon leads the cast as a guy with a bullet in his brain; frequent Jeunet collaborator Dominique Pinon is in the cast as well, alongside André Dussollier, Nicolas Marié, Jean-Pierre Marielle and Julie Ferrier. More important, the aesthetic is pure Jeunet, calling right back to Delicatessen, but with the flashes of more lighthearted imagination that characterized Amelie. Though some of the stuff in the teaser, like the camera/bullet zooming into Boon’s head, is fairly familiar at this point, I love the assembled concoction. Even reading the synopsis I have only the vaguest idea what’s going on here, but I’m ready for the full thing.

The official, very French synopsis goes like this:

Is it better to live with a bullet lodged in your brain, even if it means you might drop dead any time? Or would you rather have the bullet taken out and live the rest of your life as a vegetable? Are zebras white with black stripes or black with white stripes? Is scrap metal worth more than landmines? Can you get drunk from eating waffles? Can a woman fit inside a refrigerator? What’s the human cannonball world record? Find out answers to these questions and more. A comedy in the vein of Delicatessen and Amélie.

ditto, I also seriously thought the two men talking in that pic were standing in front of a Transformer. But I was mistaken - it's just a pile of trash...

(you gotta admit, there's a striking resemblance)

What's with the Lord of War bashing? That film was actually good. I'll be interested to see what Jeunet cooks up this time. His films are absurdly cute.
  • Lord of War was a great movie! I don't get the bashing but I guess film is a subjective experience. I will always watch and give a chance to any movie that Andrew Niccol makes makes, he reeled me in with Gattaca. As for Jeunet, I am also a fan and I am looking forward to this.
  • Thank you! I was scrolling down hoping to find more Lord of War defenders. That's a director that needs some more work (Andrew Niccol) because Gattaca's one of my all-time favorite movies and he hasn't made anything since Lord of War.

Jeunet is one of the best directors going. I'm in line for anything he does.

A Very Long Engagement never gets the love it deserves. It's beautiful and brilliant. Amazing Badalamenti score and great performances throughout. A great film.

This looks like it has a lot of signiture Jeunet, which is a very good thing. I love the digital coloring touches. He really does that well.

Oh, and what is so bad about Lord of War? Good movie.

If the French had made The Holy Grail...

What shall be the number thou shalt count after pulling the holy pin on the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch? Is that an ordinary rabbit? What is your favorite color? What is the airspeed of an unladen swallow? Does a witch weigh the same as a duck? How should naughty Zoot be punished? Did a moose bite my sister? The Ministry of Silly Walks will answer at least one of those questions. A comedy in the vein of Excalibur and Spartacus.

I don't need subtitles to see that this is going to be another awesome film from Jeunet. Delicatessen, City of Lost Children and Amelie are still on the top of my list as some of the best visual films ever made. I can't wait for this film. There is something very signature about Jeunet's films. You can even see a glimps of it in the Alien movie. :p
