When it was first announced that Steven Spielberg and Will Smith were developing an American remake of Chan-wook Park’s Oldboy with the screenwriter of Poseidon, fans freaked out. It was later revealed that the remake wasn’t a remake at all, but an American adaptation of the original Japanese manga by Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya, which Park’s film was based on. Even though the book and the movie deviate from one another, fans were still not pleased. A couple weeks back we told you that Japanese publisher Futabasga was suing the Korean film production company Show East over the rights to remake the story in Hollywood. But apparently the project is still proceeding despite the legal battle.

According to a new report from Reuters, South Korean sales company Cineclick Asia, which represented Show East’s Oldboy in international territories, actually negotiated the remake deal with Universal. Of course, the rights to remake the film got bought by Mandate, who later sold to DreamWorks. And while the studio is not publicly commenting about the mess, Dreamworks is still moving forward with the development of the film.

And the lawsuit is as complicated as they come. Futabasga has files a cast against Show East, a company that has not only shut down, but its CEO, Kim Dong-Ju, has disappeared. Complicating the matters further, Big Egg, who co-produced of the original film, has also closed up shop and disappeared.

In the 2003 South Korean film, a man named Dae-Su is locked in a hotel room for 15 years without knowing why or who is holding him captive. He is suddenly released, given money, clothes and a cellphone and is sent on journey for revenge. The film won the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival and was highly praised by Jury President Quentin Tarantino. Praised for it’s intense visuals and twisted story, Oldboy was met with positive reviews in the States, and is currently getting an 82% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and an 8.3 user rating on IMDB, for a #117 placement on the top 250 films of all time.

Read the official book synopsis below:

“Ten years ago, they took him. He doesn’t know who. For ten years he has been confined in a private prison. He doesn’t know why. For ten years his only contact with the outside world has been a television set and the voices of his jailers. In time, he lost himself. He changed . . . transformed himself into something else . . . something hard . . . something lethal. Suddenly one day, his incarceration ends, again without explanation. He is sedated, stuffed inside a trunk, and dumped in a park. When he awakes, he is free to reclaim what’s left of his life . . . and what’s left is revenge.”

The Onion AV Club says that “the manga’s story isn’t nearly as propulsive and grim as the film version, but as soon as their plotlines begin to deviate, the manga becomes just as compelling.” So while the short plot synopsis sounds similar, it appears that the film adaptation did deviate from Minegishi and Tsuchiya’s original manga. For those that might be interested, Amazon has each of the three volumes available for around 10 or 11 bucks each.

  • will smith for oldboy remake, no no no
  • dagreenman18
Damn. The funny thing is it's not the fact that it's an american Oldboy adaptation or Will Smith that makes me hate this project. it's the fact that the got the guy who wrote POSEIDON on it. Out of all the people they could have commissioned to write this, they got that asshole.

also, while i love the manga to pieces, the movie was better.
  • keicharones
Oldboy is one of my favorite films, top 10 easy.

Poseidon? really? Manga's are not meant for American remakes.
  • Danos
Mark Protosevich ain't that bad. If any of you had read his original (underlined) draft for I Am Legend, you would know that. Not the film that ended up on the screen after been hacked and butchered by Akiva Goldsman and Will Smith.

But Will Smith, hollywood Oldboy remake, yuck.
  • Jonny
Someone needs to make a hyper realistic film where a group of forum fanboys kill directors and actors who attempt to remake their favorite films. It needs to be so realistic that it scares hollywood to stop making remakes for the fear of copy cats.
  • zstrankman
This story just makes me sick. I had heard about the Oldboy film for a couple years before I finally got a chance to see it. My girlfriend an I were completly blown away by the films visceral effects and mindbending story. The film quickly became one of my personal favorites and on repeated viewings offered us both more into what the director had intended his audiences to feel. Awesome film. With that said, I really don't have the faintest idea of what the hell Speily and Wilbur are up to. The bottom line is that you cannot re-make an Oldboy film. No possible way. I don't care if you plan on deviating from the original or straying or coming closer to the manga. Any way you try and wrap your piece of crap it is still just a piece of crap. I just can't believe that Spiely is on board. I would expect this from Smith but not the guy who brought us Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List. Cmon Spiely, your better then this. Please scrap it. Please.
  • still not interested.
  • Damn, I was hoping Futabasga (or however has set the legal ball rolling), would be suing DreamWorks for being incredibly stupid regarding trying to remake a South Korean classic. And on that note, nobody can replicate the genius of the 'one man, one hammer' hallway sequence; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wha0brbb_44
  • gamache
I think it will be good.
Spielberg has made some of the greatest films ever.(munich / the list / that private ryan film)

Also sometimes remakes work out....did you see that Departed movie?

so get over it, and stop bashing films before you even.
all these fan boys need to settle down.
  • jcossota
Agreed. You would think that Spielberg would have earned some trust by now, but the fanboy backlash is always knee-jerk and over-reactionary.
  • Egger Buckland
Maybe you missed the hook / a lost world / that crystal skull movie.
  • MissMe
Exactly! Spielberg threw whatever trust he had out the window with Crystal Skull...
  • uh yea. cause that's rational...
  • Valerie
all those films you are naming SUCK. Have you seen the Park Chan Wook's Oldboy? Any film by Park? If you haven't you don't know what us, FANS, are talking about. If Spielberg is so good anyway, why doesn't he come out with an idea of his own. And Will Smith is one of the worst Hollywood actors ever! For gods sake, you gotta be kidding me: STEVEN SPIELBERG AND FUCKING WILL SMITH! gross!
  • E.J. Wells
    Spielberg? Greatest films ever? Please.
The only two films he's made that rise above mediocre are Jaws (his best), and Schindler's List. The rest are candy coated, bloated money grabs.
Spielberg is largely what's wrong with American cinema.
  • nathan
There are eight volumes by the way, but they aren't as good as the movie(2003), but they still might be worth checking out. However, as the Chan-wook's movie has proven the overall plot and action of the manga leaves a lot of room for change in the adaptation, because it can have a weak story in more than a few areas. So you never know how bad or good the remake will be until it is made and released. Will it be as great and complex as its Korean counterpart? No, probably not, and who knows if it will live up to the manga. Besides, if all else fails, people still have the first movie and comic, which will always be seperate from the remake and each other.
  • The "remake" is still going to blow, regardless. I really don't think Will Smith or Speilberg can do justice to the story, no offense. I don't think they get the story...
  • Ronin
My God, why don't they just go for the Full Suck and have Mike Bay direct it.
  • D
I will laugh my ass of at Will Smith in this movie. I hope at the end during the big reveal he at least says "Oh Hell No!!!"

I still have the original, so this I care zer0 about.
After Indy 4 I have very little faith in Spielberg anyway.
  • kas
F*ck! When was the last time Smith said that? ..have you been living under a rock? he is not the fresh prince any more. Will smith is a fine actor and he has the range to pull off a character like Goto.

And you lost all fate in Spielberg only because he did one really crappy film? Don't kid yourself, you probably never liked him to begin with.
  • Shortysvilla
I am not completely against Steven S. directing this. I don't like the fact that the studio wants to be pc and put a black actor in this role. THAT is what needs to stop!!!! Remaking old films with black actors when the parts were originally non-black actors is absurd! Why must they do this?! Because Will Smith sells tickets opening weekend until word of mouth says hey that new Will Smith movie sucked! Then sales go bye-bye! Also when studios attach Will they also attach a PG-13 rating which is even more absurd! Johnny Depp would be better suited S.S.!!! He is more credible and can actually act!
  • kas
Would Will Smith's skin color effect the story in any way?
Would the story be any different if Goto was black?

If you can't answer this question, ou sir, are a racist.
  • Shortysvilla
Pfft!!! Please don't play the race card! You obviously didn't read my last sentence explaining why Johnny Depp would be a better pick;.....he can actually act! First off I am not white! I have grown up loving movies and completely disagree with this style of remake! The original manga has an asian character. The original movie has an asian character. I like consistency in films. Pushing the envelope with a non-asian character I am all for. Why push it further with a black actor is just stupid! Trying to change the visual perception of the main character doesn't make sense. And yes the story would be different if the Goto was black, don't kid yourself!
  • kas
HAHAHA! You think it's ok to push things with a non-Asian actor (I presume white) but when it's a black actor it's not ok? You obviously have a very stereotypical image about Black pople and black actors.

Black, white or yellow The skin tone of an actor is irrelevant. unless the skin tone, race or any of the physical representation of the character is a significant part of the story. (which it is not in this case)

And I agree with you that Depp would be a better pick, But I disagree that Smith is a bad pick. He obviously likes to work on sci-fi action movies more then drama, but he is not bad at it. (Take a look at his movies like The Pursuit, ali and legend) And he has the nominations to proof that.
  • Shortysvilla
I completely agree with you and "Dizzy.." on your points of view. Except The 3 movies you picked starring Will S. And as for the academy noms...well how credible has the academy been really besides last year?! Steven S. did a great job with his sci-fi in Minority Report and I don't like Tom Cruise. A.I. not so much! I agree also with the comment below that some director's can miss their mark; see A.I. and Indy 4. But it is not I who is racist..it IS hollywood. When a studio puts a black character in the lead he and the supporting black characters suddenly have sass and attitude. And case in point with pelham 123...don't forget the milk?!
Why must Hollywood dumb down black actors to roles of this nature. Leave that to Tyler Perry and his audience! It is the same with hispanics! We are seen as barrio wife beater wearing accent having gang members with tattoos?! I simply don't need to go into this movie with Will S. speaking jive to appease to a dumbed down audience. Give me a classic not a forgettable remake with today's sass and slang! Again I mean no harm or racism!
  • Colossi
Spielberg first crapped all over the Indiana Jones franchise which resulted in a godawful part IV.
Will Smith is a one trick pony with no discernable talent for the dramatic.

Obviously this vehicle is meant to put food on the table of Spielberg and Smith. Definately NOT because this is a challenging, innovative project that requires the hands of a master.
  • OH! MY! WILL SMITH??? This is so wrong!
  • dizzyupthegirl
I don't know of a clear opinion on this, I think we will just have to see what all the fuss is about and go with it for the time being. Yeah Spielberg didn't exactly deliver on Indy IV; however, I do believe that with all that man has accomplished, he is going to occassionally slip sometimes with the non-perfect card. He's very well respected in my book though, so let him experiment with this and move on people.

Will Smith though, hmmm, I don't know if I like this pick. I kind of like the idea of Johnny Depp playing this.
  • nighthawk1
Starring will smith and directed by Steven Spielberg. It's going to suck real bad. Enough said.
  • Saladinho
Spielberg could pull it off, but I just don't trust Will Smith. I can never take him seriously.
  • Joebob
I seldom met a US remake of an Asian movie I liked. Now, I don't have a problem with those who like the remakes. I just don't care for such things myself.
  • Saladinho
Me neither. I think I was trying to be fair and balanced with the above comment (which doesn't sound like me when it comes to remakes). Oh, that's right: It's because the film is supposed to be an adaption of the original comic, rather than a straight remake. Which would be pointless.
  • Name
    nooo!
somebody do something about this! i am gonna have nightmares. is there no way to contact spielberg to tell him what a f****** dumb idea this is?
does he have no friends? friends usually tell you the truth about your new crazy ideas.

so, if YOU are a friend of stephen spielberg, please tell him the truth. he will tear oldboy apart. he will raaaype it.
  • JPJPJP
Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are beating around the bush. Saying that they are using the manga for inspiration and not the original movie is a terrible terrible terrible excuse for following through with this project. How about some new material? How about coming up with an original idea and not taking the "all about the money" hollywood approach?
  • mrpounds
But if you want to look at this realisticly... Steven Spielberg created one of the best movies ever made (Schindler's list) along with many other classics and will probably do something at least relatively enjoyable by re-making old boy. I'm sure i'll like the original more than his version, but he's an absolutely amazing director who will come up with something to make this re-make good.
