uncharted

For quite some time, Sony has quietly been working to develop a film based on the PlayStation 3 game Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Now with the game’s sequel getting great press in the wake of E3 (and thanks in part to a fun multiplayer beta) Sony has dropped word that the movie is actually happening. Kyle Ward has been hired to pen the script, which makes his second video game-related announcement in two days (He’s also scripting Hitman 2).

Development of Uncharted isn’t a surprise, as it was explicitly designed in the first place to have the quality of a summer adventure film. The story features Nate Drake, a descendant of Sir Francis Drake. Nate is being shadowed by journalist Elena Fisher as he searches for the coffin of his forefather. When found, the object contains a diary that seems to point to El Dorado, and Nate and Elena are soon involved in a run and gun tale featuring pirates, lost gold and mutant humans. THR’s coverage suggests the film will simply be called Drake’s Fortune.

Ward is also on board Fox’s Hitman 2, about which there is less detail available. Variety says that the film begins at the nadir of Agent 47’s career, after which “he must build himself back up psychologically and physically to reclaim his mantle as the world’s most feared assassin.” Eidos has a new Hitman game scheduled for next year, the fifth numbered title in the series, and this script will be based in part on elements of that game.

Right now, it’s easy to peg Ward as the new game-to-script guy in town. He already had Kane and Lynch set up at Lionsgate, with Bruce Willis still attached to star, and now these two new projects put him squarely in the video game corner. And while Hitman 2 likely won’t be much bigger than the first film, expect Drake’s Fortune to be heavily promoted as a tentpole, assuming things work out well.

why is 'it'll be like a poor man's indiana jones' a successful movie pitch? tomb raider, national treasure, the mummy and sahara should have put an end to that, surely.

If Nathan Fillion does not play drake something is wrong with Hollywood because he is literally perfect for it
  • For seriously. I was just watching Firefly and thought, "N-Town looks a lot like Nathan D...eeang, he sounds exactly freaking like him too." Sadly, whoever decides to do this will probably see Fillion as too old.
  • Travis McGee
That's funny. Cause he is the voice of the character in the game. The character was also modeled after him.
  • fahdaddy
Drake was voiced by Nolan North check him out on imdb he has made quite a career doing video game voices.
  • I second that.

Uncharted won't be that hard to do since the game was pretty much a modern-day Indiana Jones flick. Kane and Lynch could work. Hitman 2..... erk.
  • Eric C
Hopefully they cut out the zombie monster crap that happeneds towards the end of the game.

You mean dumb like spirits suddenly emerging from the Ark in Indiana Jones?

Did the supernatural ruin the movie for you?
  • Has the Kane and Lynch screenplay ever been leaked? Is this guy a good writer? The studios must be something in him to hand him Uncharted. They're basically insinuating, "go launch us a franchise."

You Spoiled the ending to a game...Nice.

Having had some special effects done for my film this week by a UK effects company, I also know that they have just 'won' the tender for some of the work for 'Halo'. So unless I've missed the story, it seems that that film is indeed still in the pipeline. Just thought I'd share it with you guys. :)

    hahahaha

Wouldn't it be much cooler to have the movie be a completely new story? Then you could have movies and games that compliment each other in that each one furthers the character, sending him on another adventure. Just me?
  • antdiddly
nope making a new story is the wrong way to go. People wanna see the same thing over and over again. How would you feel if any comic book movies were completely changed. Instead of wolverine getting adamantium infused into his bones a toxic waste crashes and leaks chemicals onto him then it seeps into his bones etc................ boooooooring!

If it's not broken why fix it
    late
    Just a thought
  • From an artist view it would be the better choice to write a new story, but from the moneyman view it's simpler and cheaper to just adapt a story and turn it into crap. This movie has potential, but I'm sure, it'll get worse than Lara Crofts "Cradle of Something".

    To Kyle Ward:
"Do your best! I want a good, hard adventure movie, without a guy with hat and whip. We had enough Indy-ripoffs!"
  • cekma
He may not be the greatest actor but look's and sound wise Eddie Cibrian would make a great Drake.
  • If they do this right, it could be so freaking awesome, better than Indy. They should cast the guy who does the voice for nathan as nathan in the game as well, he looks like the character and he's great!
  • nelson
guys i just thought of this but Chris Pine is perfect for this
  • chrisbudke
Everyone is just going to peg this as an Indiana Jones ripoff. The storyline and the acting of the game was fantastic, I hope they don't take a ton of liberties with this.

They also need a good director and I don't have any ideas.

My friends and I were just recently discussing how cool an Uncharted game would be, since it is like a modern day indiana jones. Kyle Ward hasn't done much, but hopefully since he's been given all these things that means he's good. Looking forward to seeing what he's got
  • Joseph
He may be a little aged for the role, but I can't help but believe that David Boreanaz may make a good Nathan Drake.
  • Ryan Carell
Someone mentioned David Boreanaz for Drake, and I also think he'd be a good choice.

I submit for the discussion table the named of Danny Boyle as director. Every time I play the game and see the wild swinging camera-work they employed of it, I'm reminded strongly of Boyle's visual style.
  • I'm surprised Fox has put a green-light to 'Hitman 2', considering how poor the first film was and it didn't exactly set the world on fire financially (making $90m off a $30m budget, good figures, but not brilliant for a company like Fox).
  • Nathan Fillion was born to play Drake (Uncharted: Drakes Fortune film adaptation)
