Amelia Movie Trailer

Amelia Earhart may have had quite a presence in the second Night at the Museum movie earlier this summer, where she was played by a spunky Amy Adams, but she’s also getting her own biopic called Amelia, starring Hilary Swank, Richard Gere and Ewan McGregor. The first trailer has debuted at Yahoo, and it’s pretty standard biopic stuff. Which is too bad, because if there was ever a great adventurous biopic meant for young girls, this would be it. See the footage from the Mira Nair-directed film after the jump.

The Ronald Bass script for Amelia was sourced from several books about Earhart, who became a national hero as the female face of early aviation. Earhart was the first female solo transatlantic pilot, and made the first solo flight from Hawaii to California. She disappeared while attempting to circumnavigate the globe in 1937. Her last contact was around Howland Island, which a shot in the trailer takes care to point out with an exquisite lack of grace. That’s one of the beats in this clip that makes me worry about the film. Despite solid casting (Swank as Earhart, Gere as her husband George P. Putnam, McGregor as Gene Vidal) the whole enterprise looks terribly rote and over-dramatic. Sure, that’s the role of the trailer, to play up tension and drama, but much of what we see here looks too artificial. (And I’m not talking about the photography, which is quite nice.)

Also: speak up in the comments if you know where the first music in the trailer comes from. The first forty seconds or so has an Explosions in the Sky sound to it, but I can’t positively pin down whether or not the trailer-friendly Texas band is actually responsible.

Amelia is a Fox Searchlight film, and opens on October 23.

Seems very "Oscar baitey" but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
  • JFK
That is well designed title. Love it.
  • Seems really good but the trailer makes it look like a action film...
  • krackajap
I'll be pissed if anyone spoils the ending for me. I want to be just as surprised as when I saw Titanic.
  • Nick
I think the trailer is cut rather conventionally, but I'm sure Nair will do something interesting with it. Even with very plotted films she injects a life and a beauty that's always worth seeing.

As for it being an adventure film for young girls, it's rated PG, so that might actually work.

The trailer music is actually taken from Danny Boyles' Sunshine, when Capa escapes the Icarus 2
  • irodeapony
That's the first part, then I believe its X-Ray Dogg's Appasionata. From 1:26 on, I have no idea.
  • TheGreenMalice
I must be the only one not interested in this film. The trailer nearly put me to sleep.
  • matt
    Same here
  • Tyler
If there was an explosion and Amelia was played by Megan Fox would you enjoy it more?

    Ass.
  • Michael_W
"If...Amelia was played by Megan Fox would you enjoy it more?"

    Yes
  • TheGreenMalice
You shouldn't make assumptions. I enjoy quite an array of films, but this one, based on that trailer bored the crap out of me. I have never been a fan of Hilary Swank, and Richard Gere just doesn't do it for me anymore.

But wait I am more confused by you calling me an Ass. Nothing in what I said should have garnered that reaction.

    Douche.
  • Tyler
Wow, the monkey knows how to give a reason! Maybe the ass remark wouldn't have been warranted if you would have said that rather than your "ugh this put me to sleep" comment.
  • Bon Champion
    win.
  • Bon Champion
the win comment was in response to green malice... not tyler the douche.
  • MrW
I can only hope that the movie won't be as predictable as this trailer.
  • diginaut3000
Somebody give Ewan McGregor something better to do...
  • Mr B
Interested to see Swank play someone who was significantly older than her. Earhart was 40 when she went missing. And while Adams was cute as a button, she really didn't look a thing like Earhart. Excellent casting choices.
  • it's like "The Aviator"................ with girls!
  • Peter R
MEH. Swank is alright. But this trailer is terrible. Hopefully the movie turns out a bit better.
Gere is the man, perhaps only behind Hugh Grant.
Ewan just isn't doing it for me yet...his accents always seem to throw me as they sound to forced...much like his acting feels.
  • Bon Champion
Richard Gere and Hugh Grant are your top male actors? Enjoy your romcoms, but there are some much better actors out there. I promise.
  • Peter R
Sorry after reading that over...perhaps my sarcasm didn't come across enough. Though in all honestly, I don't mind a bit ol'Hugh in the right situation.
  • I'd like to see how they make Amelia's lack of navigational skills and dyke-ness an empowering thing.
  • Steph
Why is she playing the character as a retard? I don't think that Amelia Airheart was a retard. Was she?
  • The Duck
Peter, Dave, IT guys, what the hell is going on with the uploadoing of the movie trailers. This one and the the trailer for the invention of lying are both really messed up (cutting etc) pls sort it!
  • Looks pretty decent. Oscar bait, like sideshowRaheem says. I don't think it'll be stellar, though. Seems like they're just going to retell the story we all know. I would hope they'll show something we never knew about her, (like all the [supposed] details of Hughes's affairs in "The Aviator").

Speaking of aviator films, I'm actually much more excited to watch "Le dernier vol de Lancaster", "Lancaster's Last Flight". It's with Marion Cotillard and Gillaume Canet, who played the French officer in "Joyeux Noel".
  • Dude
The cinematography looks pretty nice an I guess Swank will amaze me as always
  • She's speaking every line like it was lifted from an old historical piece of footage. It all seems a little TOO "proper".
  • freemachine
Amelia was from my neighborhood, in North Hollywood, and there is a pretty statue dedicated to her in the local park next to the public library.
  • freemachine
  • i will watch out for this movie... i love hilary swank..
  • Guy
Swank and Gere, that's a miss.
  • stella
what's with using the word retard? Isn't it time to get out of middle school?
  • Robert Maffitt
The Movie "Amelia" will be very Interesting to me as my Grandfather was very close friend to Amelia and have the "Only" photo of her. The photo was taken at her party at the Biltmore Hotel in New York City before her Attempt to fly around the world, June 1936 standing next to Robert S. Maffitt, my grandfather. It is even signed by her.
  • David
The trailer music is by a band called Iliketrains, hope that helps :)
