Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has scored the best opening day ever for a Wednesday release, with an estimated $60.6 million domestically. The previous record-holder was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which grossed $44.2 million on a Wednesday in July 2007. The $60.6 million includes a confirmed $16 million from midnight shows, the third largest overnight numbers of all time behind only The Dark Knight ($18.5 million) and Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith ($16.9 million).

The film could earn anywhere between $150-$170 million by Monday morning. That number would be enough to beat Spider-Man 2’s $152.4 million 5-day opening, which would put it as the fifth biggest five day opening of all time (under The Dark Knight, Revenge of the Sith, Pirates 2 and Spider-Man 3).

  • Go! Go! Go! I can't wait to see the numbers start to pour in over the next few days
  • smrtalec
    holy crap

America's lack of taste has once again been confirmed.
  • Why? Because people like seeing giant robots kicking the shit out of each other? I will never understand why some people think that every film has to be a masterpiece. That every film has to be a pre-2010 Best Picture contender. Sometimes people just want to see giant robot ass kicking. And Michael Bay, once again, delivered that to us.
  • Ujjbnf
Every film doesn't have to be a masterpiece, they just can't be mind numbingly boring like transformers
  • I fail to see where anything Michael Bay related is "mind numbingly boring". There was an explosion in that movie every few minutes. More robots in the final scene than I could count. The plot was kinda boring but the action more than made up for it. It wasn't as good as the first one, in my opinion, but it was still one of the most entertaining movies I have seen.
  • Parker
Simple minds, simple pleasures. Do shiny things distract you as you walk down the street?

Gratuitous explosions do not a good movie make.
  • No, not at all. I don't appreciate my intelligence being insulted though. A person is allowed to have fun during a movie, right? That's what Transformers is... it's just fun.
  • Octoberist
I'll be more fair because the bottom line is that no one can tell anyone what they can or cannot like, but I'll be non-fanboyish with my review.

I think there were some better creative choices that could have been made. There was a point in the movie where I was like "Oh yeah, this is Transformers". The Autobots totally get sidelined in the movie, and we're stuck with Shia and his gang for almost an hour. Not only that, the bots that you see is Bumblebee (who can't talk) and the awful Twins. Rachet and Iron Hide are barely in the movie. That's a damn shame.

I also think that it might be a better movie if the first two hours were cut. It took too long to get to the last half, and the last battle lost its fun because it dragged on.

I like Michael bay movies, but it seems like here, he needed to re-edit the movie, and he needs to calm down a little with his 'Bayness'.
  • Falen
I think there is a narrative relativity to most things. Some rom-com is not an inherently better piece of fiction because it lacks noisy explosions and car chases. A lot of movies are just as shallow or insipid but they are so on their own individual ways.
Certain film buffs have the history of cinema and literature shoved up there ass and think anything with a nazi character is pure genius and anything with robots or aliens is pure slop.
  • Xaeinovis
I, along with a number of my friends, naively thought that Bay would've addressed the criticisms from the first this time around...

And that really wasn't the case. Trust me, this movie won't be getting any repeat viewings from me.
  • Zella
    haha..youre a f^ckwit
  • VIPER
This is not suppose to another dark knight or gay titanic it is what its is Transformers it delivers on what it set out to do. America's lack of taste? So what if it wasnt oscar worthy It was an enjoyable flick and people go to see movies like this to escape and to have fun. Poeple need to stop being so negative. If thats all your going to do then go back down to your moms basement and stay there. No one wants to hear it.
  • Allison:)
Thank you Viper, I am sick of hearing the negative things ppl are saying about this great movie. If u didnt like it then y did u go see it. I mean its just a summer flick....hav a sense of humor.
  • Probably the most undeserving numbers in a long time. This will only further fuel the bitterness towards this atrocious flick.
  • hayward
Of course it was going to be insane takings, it's Transformers. It looked amazing. Too bad it was the equivalent of watching 'Pain Olympics' on repeat (google it).
  • dagreenman18
I want $10 of those dollars back.
  • People are showing that they like a good action movie nad dont care much about the story.Lets see how big the second weekend dropp will be .
  • [A]
    No toast, /film..?
  • edog
Great big opening numbers, but look for it to sink like a stone. Lousy reviews and so-so word of mouth won't keep it in the number one spot once Ice Age and Public Enemies open next Wednesday.

As one of the commenters here observed a couple weeks ago, in McG vs. Bay, whoever wins, we all lose.
  • McG is most certainly a hack. But I really enjoyed the new Terminator movie, I had read reviews and wasn't expecting too much, but I ended up thinking it was considerably better than average. I would watch another one, if it ends up happening.

I am going to see Transformers 2, knowing full well I will likely end up full of regret. That is why these types of movies do well. Everyone here is trashing on it and saying it doesn't deserve it, but 80% have already seen it and the 20% will.
  • mbellerbrock
I completely agree with your first paragraph. And you have a point with the second. But I'll sit out on this one. Seems utterly horrible and I can't imagine I'll like it. I'll wait until it hits netflix.
  • John
I bet the numbers fall big after the weekend from bad word of mouth. The script was a joke.
  • Chris Taylor
Umm Wolverine says hi. Bad word of mouth and it still did well. Most of the general public liked it, just as they seem to with Transformers. All the "normal" people who don't follow film blogs religiously I've talked to loved the movie.
  • Justsaying
Chris, you hit the nail on the head. Filmbloggers can post idiotic rants on message boards until they turn blue in the face. It's not going to stop everyday people from enjoying this film. And rather than wasting day after day being miserable (because this film is going to rake in the millions for a long time despite the wishes of Bayhaters) while everyone else is having a good time, they could just focus their energy on some film that they love. You have to be a moron to exasperate your mental faculties on a film you don't like when there are dozens upon dozens of other films playing at your local cinema that you might actually enjoy if you'd have sense enough to seek them out.
  • quintushalls
This is like watching a train wreck in slow motion.

People had high expectations for this film as a major popcorn event and when they leave the theater vomiting and gouging out their eyes, next weekend's numbers will be 40%+ lower.
  • PJthaBear
I actually enjoyed this movie alot. It made me feel like a kid again. I think the first movie made people forget YOUR WATCHING THE BIGGEST EPISODE OF TRANSFORMERS EVER. get over it and enjoy it for what it is. Pleasant surprise from M. Bay if you ask me. Like a big slap in the face saying "did you forget this was TRANSFORMERS and not Shia Lebouf vs. the decepticons."
  • Jabberwocky
Yeah i felt like i was watching an episode of the anime the whole time and that's what i liked about it. i still love this movie, not the best movie of the year but still worth my $10 bucks. and worth my 11 when i see it in IMAX no matter how annoying the format changes will be.
  • matt
There was a Terminator in this film......Epic Fail
  • Dave
Star Wars success was a fluke b/c if Kurtzman and Orci wrote this movies whose script has been bashed in almost every review I have read, I have no faith that they can come up with a good story for the Star Trek Sequel. Shit the story to Star Trek itself sucked. The film benefitted from good acting and directing.
  • Jabberwocky
I'm a fan of Kurtzman and Orci but they weren't alone in the writing of the script. If anyone hates the story, then it's the new guy to blame. Ehren Kruger is his name and you know what he wrote? Scream 3, he also wrote all of the Ring movies and The Brothers Grimm. So yeah I blame him and not Alex or Roberto.
  • mbellerbrock
Ugh... those are some bad movies. I hope you're right. Orci and Kurtzman had me a little worried when I found out they wrote Transformers 1 and 2. I really hope they can improve upon their first Star Trek, like Dave said, the story was definitely the weakest part.
  • GWG
Box office results really don’t mean much of anything. Unless it is adjusted for inflation, number of theaters and misc. adjustments (like higher IMAX prices) – it is rigged to make it always look like the newest tent pole movies are breaking records. Tricky….
  • TLBorlando
if this film beats The Dark Knight's three day total with it's own three day total; i will be shocked. i hated the first film; and after reading the reviews, I will not go see ROTF!
  • willam
did anyone notice the movies are all sequels
  • stephen
At least it wont be The Dark Knight...
  • Jawmuncher
Is everyone here a Pro Critic?

Well thats what I get I suppose from commenting on a movie news site.

Everyone just needs to remember that there are way more people who watch movies and don't really care for reviews and what not.

It can mostly be compared to the whole Casual and Hardcore gamer thing going on.
There's people who love movies a lot and see them as a art form (Like most people on this site I would say)

But there are way more people who just go to see a movie for the expierence of it whether that be some fun action sequences and what not.

You can look at the top box office movies and just about everyone of them can basically be put into the "the movies bad but fun category"
  • SharkBaitHooHaHa
Well, there's no accounting for good taste, is there?

I think I'd rather drive my car back/forth into my garage door for 2.5 hours.
  • Jessica
I can not believe what I am hearing. Is anyone here a real transformers fan. I mean come on.... what do you think we grew up watching it for. The first movie was the come lets get to know sam and them. this one is for come lets get to know the robots. I loved that we got to know them better and that they had a history with us thousand of years go.

I couldn't believe what I read. I loved this movie god!!!!!!! I loved Death Race too. I remember I read that with this much action who needs a plot. The same holds true for transformers. Look, I went to see it to get these out of it. Action, laughs, kept on the edge. It gave me that. Michael even scared me a few times. I loved him for that. Yes ironhide and Racket wasn't in it much, but that was because there just wasn't time for all of the autobots to get the screen time. But they did get a few moment in there. Incase if you forgot this was called revenge of the fallen. which meant more bad guys and the good guy would be out numbered. I loved the action at the end with prim. I loved that:) I guess I a fan of the show and I always will be.

    I can't believe what I heard ;((((((((
  • Justin
Any one who liked this movie has NO TASTE. It's that fucking simple. Your "its turn your brain off fun" or "What did you expect?" excuses are bullshit. I thought the first transformers was passable, a fun action movie. I expected to like this one in that same sense. I haven't actually almost been lulled to sleep by a movie since The Matrix Revolutions. Michael Bay should be fucking ashamed of this movie. The humor was god awful and cringe-worthy, especially in a theater full of kids who didnt quite get it, but still laughed anyway because they're kids. The action had no tension because it was non stop for 2.5 hours. The story was basically a carbon copy of T1 in its structure. This is easily Michael Bay's worst movie, and I'm not a fan of his to begin with.

    Lets recap:
I was one of the people saying "Relax guys, just turn off your brain and have fun for a few hours" a few weeks ago. Not anymore, I'm insulted, and it pains me physically to see that this Hollywood-produced trash making more money in one day than State of Play, The Brothers Bloom and Moon (my three favorite movies of the year so farr) will ever hope to make in their lifetimes.

    Good riddance, America.
  • Bob Smith
Congrats on attempting to slander people that liked the movie by saying you were on their side before then switched after viewing. The movie has a light story, isn't supposed to be a drama. It is about viewing explosions and robots on a screen to make them life size, viewing this at home would make the movie suck.

People that claim Hangover is a good movie, yes a movie about getting drunk and forgetting what happened, aka, Dude Wheres my Car, and ever other story on college humor repeated..... and think this movie is what is destroying America? Please.
  • Jessica
    Thanks Bob,

I don't know what people think. I mean if they would have given us another transfomers like the first one. I and every other fan out there would be polting Michael Bay's death. So I say well done Michael and I hope a transfomers 3 in the works. Now to all of you looking for a drama go back to the cartoon and try to see what we saw then and do now. Get a dame clue.
