Ryan Reynolds To Star In Indie Thriller Buried

Ryan Reynolds will star in Buried, a film that pushes him well out of the studio comfort zone, according to Variety. The film is about a civilian contractor in Iraq who is kidnapped and buried alive in the desert. According to the trade he has a candle, knife and cell phone; not the sort of things typically left on the person of someone who is being buried alive, so I’m tending towards the assumption there’s more going on than just Iraq war drama.

The film will shoot in Spain under the direction of Rodrigo Cortes from a script by Chris Sparling. Reading just the bare details I can’t help but think of the amazing film The Vanishing, which remains my favorite ‘buried alive’ movie. (The 1988 original, not director George Sluizer’s own 1993 remake.) The tenusous safety of civilian warzone contractors makes for a good starting point for a thriller, too. I’d be surprised we haven’t seen more films jumping off from the contractor scenario if it weren’t for the fact that putting ‘Iraq’ in the logline of any film now seems like a surefire way to kill it at the box office. We’ll hope for better for this one. I like the idea of Reynolds stretching himself in a controlled little thriller where he really has to carry the film on more than just charm.

  • Looking forward to more details about this film. I'm not a fan of Reynolds, but I do love a good "buried alive" story. I, too, really enjoyed the original "The Vanishing." I never watched the remake since the original left nothing more to be desired.
  • Sounds like a great story and really cool to see him expand his talents and go for this. Tough subject matter but if pulled off right could be a very big indie hit as well as get him more serious roles.

I'm sorry, but any movie he does, he will always appear to me as Van Wilder.

How utterly ignorant and childish of you.

If you'd watch other movies rather than his silly frat boy comedies then I think you would change your tune.

Between all the comedies of The Proposal, X-Men, Adventureland, My Boys, Definitely Maybe, Paper Man, Chaos Theory, Smokin' Aces, Just Friends, Waiting, School of Life, (Amityvillle and Blade are campy), Harold & Kumar, Foolproof, The In-Laws, Scrubs, Buying the Cow, Van Wilder, and Two Guys a Girl and Pizza Place, what Ryan Reynolds film will make me change my tune?

Try Chaos Theory and The Nines.. They're more of out of his norm.. Definitely Maybe was still a great movie.. But if you're a dude, and you're not a huge fan of stories depicting how someone met their wife to their kid, you might not choose that one. Smokin' Aces was nothing like what he usually does and shows him not as a comedian, but as an actual actor. I'm not saying the movie was good, but his performance was great. The Proposal was still a great movie, and he wasn't a full out "I want to make you laugh" comedian, it was subtle and was a very good film. I doubt Sandra Bullock would choose to do crappy movies.. But I hope that helps you. If you're more into the indie, sit down and really think about it movie, I'd start with The Nines and then move onto Chaos Theory. Hope this helps

Well for starters you clearly haven't seen some of those films. Paper Man isn't even out yet. Chaos Theory and Smoking Aces are not comedies (he played the straight man in Smoking Aces) Amityville campy? Hmmm not really.

Go watch The Nines or Fireflies in the Garden.
  • I can't get on board with Ryan Reynlods. Has a lot to do with being a Jason Lee fan from very early on, well before Ryan came along.
  • I think this a good step for Ryan. I loved him in "The Nines". If he could allow the same platform, he could break away from the screwy comedies as of late. I am intrigued by the concept of being buried alive.

This will be a solid psychological thriller.

    Agreed Branden.
I loved Ryan in "The Nines" as well, and doing more indie stuff can only solidify him in my books.
Looking forward to more news on this...
