Michael Jackson Dies at Age 50

michael-jackson-moonwalker

“God damn it.” That was my first thought when I first caught word that Michael Jackson had suffered a heart attack earlier today. Like many, I kept my eye on Twitter for updates, all the while hoping for the best. Seriously, in what kind of sick sad world could we lose Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson on the same day?  TMZ was the first to report his death, and it was eventually confirmed by the LA Times.

By now it’s probably not worth rehashing the events of today any further. Those of you who care are already thoroughly depressed, and those of you who don’t have probably clicked away. I don’t even consider myself a diehard fan, but I thought a few words are in order for the passing of a man who has left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry.

First off, he helped shape what was cool in the 80’s, which is most clearly seen in Miami Vice (produced by Michael Mann). Consider the following clip from the series pilot:

It’s probably hard for someone who hasn’t lived through the 80s to grasp the fact that Jackson was once considered a badass. Another iconic representation of this is the Martin Scorsese directed music video for Bad (here’s a Youtube link to the 7-min version of the video):

Jackson also had a penchant for the cinematic, which perfectly coincided with the rise of MTV and music videos in the early 80s. The John Landis-directed video for Thriller is a prime example:

Landis also went on to direct the video for Black or White.

The saddest aspect of Jackson’s death to me is that he never got the chance to overcome all of the gossip and controversy surrounding his personal life and wow us again as an entertainer. His last album, Invincible, certainly didn’t accomplish that, and I always thought it would make for a helluva comeback story.

Strange things. Last week-end, my sister asked me if I had a best-of of Michaël Jackson. "Sure", I said, "I'll bring it to you". Yesterday, with one of my friends, in a shop, looking at Michaël Jackson's cds, I thought it was sad for this man not to have the possibility to do something really good for years...One hour ago, I woke up and heard the news.
Well, even if, to me, Michaël Jackson will never have the chance to make his come-back, even if "Dangerous" is the last good album I heard from him, we can't only keep this image of "Wacko Jacko". This man brought so much to musics (Im mean not only "music") for so many years.
I don't really believe in God, but I'm sure that the works of Michaël Jackson will last for a long, long time. Listening to a song is most of the time better than saying a prayer. And Michaël Jackson gave us so many intense moments.
RIP, Michaël, and let your soul an spirit stay with us, and not going somewhere they don't belong.
  • You know, I was waiting for his comeback too. I admired how he shaped a genre during a time where it was just beginning. I'm not a fan of the current generation of "POP" but I appreciate his contribution to the musical arts, as well as the cinematic arts and the gaming arts (I still have his game in an Arcade Cabinet). He will be missed. I knew Billy Jean was not his lover, it was the world.

    Michael Jackson...RIP.
    You are the mighty one.
    You are the king.
You are the God of all music.
  • Craigasorusrex
When I first learned about this it was from a phone call from my distraught mother who was a huge fan of Michael Jackson.

His song's transcended generations and because of that he will be immortalized by his triumphs and contribution to music.

Its almost surreal knowing that Michael Jackson is no longer alive but at least his iconic style and most important of all music that changed the industry still lives on vibrantly as ever. Today most of the mainstream music industry is polluted with non talents that use auto tone and generic pandering to "sell" their image.

Despite all his wacky and incriminating allegations there will never be a person like Michael Jackson ever again.

i am in no way bad-mouthing or posting to stir shit up, but i'm wondering if anybody else finds themselves torn between wanting to feel sad for his family, and unable to forget the recent dark events in jackson's life. if this were an ordinary man, there would be no hesitation or grieving - but obviously MJ was no ordinary guy.

so i'll ask: is anybody else having a tough time with their sympathies?
  • dag_yo
You must separate the good from the bad. Have you lost someone? The good always shines through above the bad, and somehow, the bad becomes a side note or folly, at most.

Not that he was "close" to any of us, but he did affect many of our lives long ago. Knowing what it was like to see him on the top is a great feeling. I think it is a shame that younger folks will not remember his greatness and only his life after.

how old are you (only curiosity, not judgment)? I am 25, and I think I am about as young as you can get to remember him as great (the premier of "Balck or White" is my marque moment).
  • Darklyte510
I haven't really voiced my opinion about this since I didn't want to stir shit up either but I totally agree with you. Don't get me wrong: I think the man was incredibly talented and that the pop industry owes him a huge debt and I've been known to bob my head to his songs once in a while but dying doesn't change the fact that molesting children is a pretty big character flaw.
  • I am and I can't really pinpoint why i feel the way i do.
  • quintushalls
Hopefully, you will be remembered for your music and not your life troubles.
  • rapistwerewolves
I think even a few the people that liked to poke fun at him deep down were hoping he'd be able to bounce back one day...I'll certainly always remember where I was when I saw the news.
  • Mikey
Article is inaccurate, Michael Jackson still IS a badass. RIP King of Pop.
  • GreatBigLion
Agreed. In todays pop land, populated by Chris Brown and The Black Eyed Peas, you'd wish another Michael Jackson could come along.

When you don't have anything nice to say. Don't say anything at all.
  • rockinrors
Now, everyone can forget everything that happened in recent years, and remember that he was the lord of pop.
  • Brian
I've been watching coverage of it all day and it still doesn't seem real. It's hard to accept that Michael Jackson is gone...No matter what you think of the guy, it's still just so hard and so sad. On the verge of a giant set of shows...Both him (to battle through the controversy and media garbage) and Farrah with her illness, have just fought so hard and to lose them both it...just takes a lot out of you.
  • Sadness
We lost a legend. No one can measure up to MJ.
  • Swarley
With the exception of one person's comment, it seems like all the reactions to Michael's passing have been very honorable and in no way geared around any of his negative aspects, which always brightens my spirits. It's good to know that there's still some decent compassion in this world, and that people know how to be respectful.
  • ScanCase
Just because someone dies doesn't mean you have to respect them.
  • Swarley
No, but you can still be respect-FULL.
  • ScanCase
And I was being respect-FULL by not dragging out the massive controversy around the man and just stating my negativity towards him
  • Swarley
I guess if you never liked or respected him to begin with then yeah, the fact that you're just saying your opinion is fine. I was mostly just trying to say that people can see him for the things they liked about him and not the things they didn't, out of respect. But if you never liked him to begin with then I guess you can't do that haha.

THRILLER IS DEAD HE WILL BE SORELY MISSED. WHEN I THINK ABOUT MICHAEL JACKSON AND FILM, I THINK ABOUT THE INCREDIBLE SCENE FROM REVENGE OF THE NERDS.

"HEY GUYS, WONDER JOINTS!" STATES BUGAR.

THEN WE GET MICHAEL JACKSON'S THRILLER PLAYING WHILE THE LAMDA LAMDA LAMDA AND OMEGA MOO PIG PARTY STARTS TO GET ROCKIN.

HAVING WATCHED THIS LAST WEEK, AND IT BEING MY ONE OF MY FAVORITE FILMS (DEAL WITH IT), I REFLECTED UPON THE POWER OF THRILLER.

IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST MOMENTS IN FILM HISTORY... BLESS MICHAEL JACKSON, I HOPE HIS ASSETS AREN'T IN AS BAD SHAPE AS THEY SAY.

HE OWNS 50% RIGHTS TO THE BEATLES CATALOGUE, WHICH HE PAID $50 MILLION FOR, OUTBIDDING HIS OLD PAL, PAUL MCCARTNEY.

THEY SAY THE PEPSI COMMERCIAL ACCIDENT CAUSED HIM SERIOUS PAIN, GETTING HIM GOING ON DEMEROL.

ANY ONE ELSE HAVE ANY OTHER FILMS THAT INCLUDE MJ?

iTS CLEAR THAT HE TOOK FILM TO THE MUSIC INDUISTRY, INTRODUCING A SHORT FILM - 13 MINUTES IN LENGTH, THRILLER, WHICH TRANSFORMED THE VIDEO INDUSTRY FOREVER.

I AGREE WITH MANY THAT SAY, COULD YOU EVEN IMAGINE HIM GROWING OLDER THAN THIS? MJ AT 65?

HE WAS AN INCREDIBLE TALENT, AN INNOVATOR, A SHOW STOPPER.

HE WILL BE MISSED... THANKS FOR GIVING US THE OPP. TO WRITE ABOUT HIM. THANKS, DEVINDRA.

was it really necessary to use all caps? it takes away from your message. especially the broken disjointed sentences.
  • Gajonka
    Sorry, is this Dave Chen?
  • Gajonka
Beatles catologue, which he retains a 50% ownership in - is worth 500 mm now. They say he will pass it back to Paul Mccartney in his will. HOW ABOUT HIS KIDS>>>>>> ?
  • My first reaction was WTF?
Never thought id see this day coming.
  • Justin
I would be pretty freaked out if you could see Michael Jackson's death coming.
  • R.i.P Michael Jackson
  • I couldn't stop crying yesterday!! It was like a big shock.... Michael Jackson is the Greatest musician ever. He change music and made it better. I have every single song and video of his. So this was very heartbreaking.
May you Live with Jesus in Heaven my friend....
  • daveshere
It's a shame that he just couldn't "beat it."
  • chronozome
Goodbye, Michael. You will be sorely missed
  • HelloJackToad
I keep killing celebrities. I buy 'Brokeback Mountain' and the next week, Heath Ledger dies. I buy 'The French Connection' and Roy Scheider dies, literally the next day. I buy 'The Verdict' and Paul Newman passes away. This year I buy 'The Best of The Jackson 5' and little Michael suddenly dies. I was planning on buying 'Nick and Norah's Infinited Playlist' this afternoon, but now I'm afraid Kat Dennings will suddenly get hit by a bus if I do.
  • G
PLEASE buy a Michael Bay film next
  • Haha, funny, I get it. It's a joke about how much he sucks as a director and you want him dead. LOL! *rolls eyes*
  • daveshere
Brokeback Mountain? Isn't that the Spike Lee film? About the robbers in the bank stealing from an elderly nazi?
  • Jay schoffstall
Wow this is crazy, he liked little boys! He was a monster!
  • HelloJackToad
You don't know what went on. From a rational, empathetic person's perspective it was a white, middle American family overreacting to what Michael Jackson thought was perfectly innocent. At the end of the day, if the parents really did think their boy was 'molested' that wouldn't have taken a large sum of cash in an out of court settlement. Any normal family would have wanted that fucker sent to jail for the rest of his life. They overreacted, it span out of control and they ended up fleecing him for his cash.
  • FrodoArg
Probably he was a monster but he was also one of the best music/video/pop art artist ever, one thing doesn't invalidates the other.
  • sean
    Bummer, man.
  • Neel
This was definitely one of the saddest piece of news I've heard in quite some time. I grew up watching his videos, and trying to imitate his dance moves, as I'm sure many people did. I can honestly say that my passion to dance has come from watching his videos as a kid. It hurts knowing that we will never see him comeback and wow us again like he's done so many times in the past. My prayers are with his family. Michael, you are the the King of Pop, and you will be remembered by everyone for making music that changed the world. You are loved by all, and we miss you dearly. Rest In Peace!
  • matt
No one ever talks about his movie "Moonwalker". Its too damn underated! I used to watch that movie everyday growing up and I still watch it today. Michael turning into a lamborghini, and turning himself into a giant ASS-kicking battle robot that could surely whoop optimus's ass.
And lets not forget the awesome Sega game based off the movie!

R.I.P. Michael. You will be greatly missed, But never forgotten.

I seriously can't get myself to watch one his performances or videos...Its hard.

    MJ Forever!
  • C_Sozou
R.I.P Michael Jackson, the true badass.

He was a badass. The way my dad talks about him and the way he acted in the music videos proves it...
  • Gajonka
oh wow - you must be like 8!
  • LuMendz
R.I.P. Michael. Condolences go out to his family. Sad that he'll be remembered as Wacko Jacko more than the King of Pop after all the grief has past. Though I really hope I am wrong.
  • zstrankman
    Don't worry you are.
