Frank Darabont Talks Fahrenheit 451

Frank Darabont has wanted to film Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451 for quite a long time. He’s talked about it a lot more recently as the project he wants to do next. Now he tells SciFiWire that it’s basically at the make or break point, and it all comes down to one thing: casting.

Fahrenheit is the thing I’m trying to get up next, which is casting-dependent, so it’s one of those,” Darabont said. “I’m out to somebody at the moment, fingers crossed, because, boy, do I want to make that movie. I’m not giving up. I’ll die in the traces [ed: trenches?] before I don’t make that movie.” What’s the hurry? Darabont wants to start the film while Ray Bradbury (88 years old) is alive to see it. Without an actor big enough to justify the budget, it might not happen.

Yeah, it’s not one of those movies that are vastly expensive by any contemporary standard, but money is still money, and it’s of a price that requires somebody that will justify that investment. This is definitely going to be more than [The Mist], so those other considerations do come into play.

Darabont drenched The Mist in tension and anger, so Fahrenheit 451 could well come to life under his direction. I have a feeling he’d have a field day with a story set in a wild, callous, anti-intellectual America. The story, which Bradbury indicated was meant to critique a culture that increasingly reduced knowledge to factoids devoid of context, is certainly more relevant than ever. If he makes it, can’t wait to read the reactions on Twitter!

Bradbury’s novel has been filmed before, notably by French New Wave luminary Francois Truffaut with Oskar Werner (Jules and Jim) and Julie Christie. (Promo clip for Truffaut’s version is below.) That version was slightly adventurous; not only was it the director’s first color film and only film in English, he cast Julie Christie in two roles and used other tricks like having the credits spoken rather than printed on screen to represent a culture that rejects the printed word.

Please God let this happen. The Mist is horribly underrated.
  • I agree wholeheartedly. Darabont is so unappreciated.
  • As much as I enjoyed The Mist, I hope he takes his time with this one. I prefer the more structured Darabont to the run-and-gun Darabont we saw on form with The Mist.

Please god, don't let this happen.

This book wasn't meant for movies and making one would just be sending a really ironic message (AKA the whole point of the movie).

Even the original movie was horrible. Felt like an adaptation of Breakfast of Champions.

Saying this book isn't "meant for movies" is pretty ironic in itself.

I really hope Darabont gets this film made. I salivate at the thought of seeing a mechanical hound on the big screen.

Finally a little news... even if it is nothing quite new, I'm glad he hasn't dropped the project. Favorite book, it reads fresh every time, The Mist is one of my favorite films, I think Darabont can get this done right.

So yeah, maybe it is ironic making a film based off of this book, but Bradbury himself wants FD to do it, and he is also a movie fan, and a screenwriter, most of his literature reads very "cinematically", I don't see what the big issue is if it just sticks to the book - Sam Peckinpah wanted to adapt "Something Wicked This Way Comes", and Ray asked him how he was going to do it and he replied, "Gonna rip the pages right out of the book and stuff 'em int the camera!" If Darabont does this it could be an astounding picture.
  • the only thing holding him back is that it's not called "the fahrenheit 451"

the shawshank redemption, the green mile, the majestic, the mist...

    thems jokes!

I have full confidence in Darabont. He's a good director who knows how to stay faithful to source material.

I thought Tom Hanks was involved, but that must have been quite a while ago. Truffaut's film is imperfect, if pretty great in spots. I think Daranbont giving it a shot is a good idea. Hopefully he'll be able to make it.

Frank Darabont in novel adaptation shocker! When can we see his version of Indiana Jones 4 which had monkeys taking a shit on Indy and the bad guys being turned into animals in the end.

    Fucking goon.
  • Lazer
As opposed to a character swinging on vines with monkeys and the "bad guys" being vaporized by aliens?

Yeah, they really made the right choice there.
  • Love Darabont, I can see potential for him to return to his painstakingly meticulous shooting style for this story (As he used in Shawshank and The Green Mile) which is where he performs his best work. Don't get me wrong, I loved the Mist, but I'm such a huge fan of his more "classic" style of shooting. Whatever he does, I'm sure it'll be awesome.

Farenheit 451 should be read, not watched. I don't know what purpose another adaptation would serve besides updating the home entertainment system. If it gets more people to read the book, then it's worth it. I gave a copy to one of my nephews about a year ago, and that poor book is practically falling apart now. :D
  • I read Fahrenheit 451 last year for school and it has been one of my most favorite books ever. Haha, I remember telling my english teacher that this book was just meant to be filmed. With a great director like Darabont, I will definitely be excited to see how this movie goes. BTW, I would recommend Sam Worthington as Guy Montag. He has that everyman quality that the character is supposed to have, also, he is really up and coming. If Clash of the Titans and Avatar takes off, they will definitely get the budget they deserve.

There was a film version released a while ago. I read 451 in high school and we watched the film. Even though it was cheesy, the film was still good. Darabont would bring a great energy to this classic piece of writing. I just hope he gets the right lead actor and budget he deserves.
  • Tony
i want this movie to be made.
  • Brad Dayton
Pleeease get this made! The french version is freaking horrible.
  • cantona_x
I love Truffaut's version, and would like to see Darabont remake the story
only pls hollywood never never take another try on 1984
  • 'Fahrenheit 451' is one of those novels that represents a dystopian view of an alternative future that deserves to be shown on-screen, while I love Ray Bradbury's book, I'd be happy to see Darabont take the reigns as long as he doesn't stray too far from the cradle (of course certain relevant cultural aspects will have to be placed into the film though).
  • I'm glad he's not giving up. I heard there was gonna be a new movie since November, and the IMDB page hasn't been refreshed, so I was all WTHeckles!
  • The Hurt Locker's Jeremy Renner could be great as Guy Montag. I'm totally behind Darabont directing this adaptation as well!
  • Derek
I can definitely see Clive Owen as Montag.
