Richard Kelly’s The Box Movie Trailer

thebox_trailer

The first trailer for Richard Kelly’s new film The Box has appeared, and it appropriately tries to push a few buttons. The film stars Cameron Diaz and James Marsden as a couple with an increasingly desperate need for money. A box mysteriously appears on their doorstep, followed by Frank Langella, who presents an offer: push the button on the box and someone unknown to them will die, and they’ll be given a payment of one million dollars. The story is based off Richard Matheson’s short story Button, Button. See the trailer after the jump.

The film is a period piece, set in 1976, but the economic woes facing the characters make it fortuitously appropriate to now. Shot by Steven Poster, the trailer suggests that the film looks great, with some lush photography and art direction set against locations in and around Boston, MA. The accent of Cameron Diaz may be difficult to take, but let’s be patient and see what the film brings.

This is Kelly’s return to directing after the rather disastrous Southland Tales. In contrast to the dramatic excess of that film, which I recommend checking out as one of the more spectacular failures made by any young director, this film looks tight and controlled. The trailer makes it out to be perhaps more of an outright thriller than it really is, but all the elements for a suspenseful moral horror story seem to be in place.

  • Looks Great... minus the SAW theme music near the end.
  • Sketch
Yeah what's up with that? He could have gotten Michael Andrews or someone to compose a better ending.

Download and watch the new movie The Box http://blog-movie.com/The-Box.html

Not to mention Frank Langella's voice sounding eerily similar to Jigsaw's - "You have 24 hours"
  • spacedog128
almost like they need to make the trailer more "excitable" for the masses to become appealed...
  • looks interesting, but it seems like it might go overboard
  • EvanJDeBiase
I like the concept and Frank Langella is cool, ill probably see it even though im not a big fan of cameron diaz (cept for Somethin about Mary)
  • Phil
How in the world Kelly managed to get money for another project after Southland Tales is beyond me but I'm psyched about it. Look like all kinds of fun!
  • Octoberist
The trailer was good but the music was weird, especially for a smaller period piece like this.
  • Steve
Jesus. 1:18-1:19 really creep me the f*ck out.

Nonetheless, this looks like a decent popcorn movie. Sorry Richard Kelly, but Donnie Darko seems to be the best accident you've ever had.
  • Scott
The actual box looks like the Deal or No Deal button.
  • handsofblue
So THAT'S what the banker looks like
  • L_Ron_Jeffard
Needs Jon Lovitz playing a badass cop.
  • adam
sounds a lot like stephen kings "everything's eventual"
  • Trevor
That's probably because Richard Matheson was one of King's biggest influences.
  • crymetyme
Is it me or was the last part a lot like the saw endings go to youtube to watch the ends of saw and it almost an exact match!
  • Jesus it's just the music. -.-
  • Looks strange.

    Pluses:
Good oportunity for Richard Kelly to bounce back
Working off an old Twilight Zone episode
    Frank Langella is fantastic
Looks like it has a cool creepy vibe

    Minuses:
    Cameron Diaz is awful
Cameron Diaz's accent sounds terrible and forced
Did I mention that Cameron Diaz is awful?
  • movieguzzler
Cameron Diaz's accent does sound terrible. In fact I think she has been miscast in this role.

What's up with Frank Langellas face in the movie? It seems like part of it has been carved out or something.
  • Dave
I was thinking the same thing. Cameron Diaz looks completely awful in this movie. But then again she is never really good in anything. I'm guessing that My Sisters Keeper will be the role of her career.

Which isn't really saying much considering a lot of today's actresses could probably do that performance in their sleep.
  • Aaron
Looks much much much more exciting than everything else I'd heard about it so far.
  • I can't get passed Cameron Diaz hamming it up dramatically. Rename it 'There's Just Something About The Box' and they might get a bit more traction out of this.
  • Cameron Diaz is the kiss of death.
She will hurt this film in unmentionable ways.
  • TheMarquis
I was just in the Boston Public Library the other day, and now I see it pop up in this trailer. 100 points for Boston!
  • terminals
    looks pretty good.
langella's face looks great but i wished they'd kept it more for the film.
  • John
Seems like it has the potentila to be a really creepy suspenseful film
  • thebertosaurus
I want to believe that this is going to be good, but that Southland Tales after-taste is still lurking around.
  • segedrf
    Looks like video
  • Looks absolutely awful. I could see this story working for a 1-hour TV movie, but stretched out into a feature? I feel like a lot of it will be unnecessary filler with all of the most intriguing stuff (i.e., the decision of whether or not to push the button) pushed to the sidelines.
  • LOVE IT! CANNOT WAIT TILL OCT NOW!. and hello zepp playing at the end was awesome =D... when i hear that i get all kindsa giddy lol... woah that sounds dirty...
  • Michael
Love it! It needed better music but it looks to be a very intriguing film, go Richard Kelly! I know that the movie was filmed in Boston but I remember when Richard came to the James River Film Festival last year he said the movie is actually set in Richmond, VA they just couldn't get approval from the VA film commission to film it in the city so he went elsewhere (which somewhat explains Cameron Diaz's pathetic attempt at a southern accent). I will be there opening day!

And I know I am in the minority, but I definitely feel like Southland Tales was a wonderfully escapist stroke of genius and one of my favorite film experiences. I will see anything this director makes.

James Marsden! HELL YEA!!!! I'll watch that!!!!
  • The concept is cool as hell. Hopefully the execution will do it justice. Looks potentially OTT, though. And I'll throw my hat into the "Oh, God. Why Cameron Diaz?!" ring.
  • Muffin7
The acting looked pretty poor from the two stars., don't know why they had to go with those sleight accents that seem to fade in and out during different scenes.
Was this shot on digital? Sure looked like it on a few of those shots, looked like amateur hour.
  • HolyShitMatt
Ok, so just reading the plot it sounds dull. But after watching the trailer I'm intrigued. It was well edited and the Saw music fit.
  • Erick
if I remember right, "Button, Button" was adapted into a segment of the "Twilight Zone" revival in the 80's, which was an hour show but featured stories of various lengths that weren't limited/drawn out to either a half or full hour. that meant stories were theoretically only as long as they had to be. "Button" was one of the shorter ones and i can't imagine dragging it out to a full movie without deviating from the anti-"Story of the Magi" morale of the story. short stories are short for a reason
  • ^Exactly what I was thinking.^
  • The plot strikes me as being exactly like Indecent Proposal:

Movie characters make a decision for a million dollar payout that everybody in the theater except them know is going to turn out badly.

At least Indecent had Redford and Demi Moore in various stages of undress.
  • Rockie
saw this episode as well on the twilight zone....oh well
  • jason B
richard fucking kelly! very nice! very nice indeed. it felt like the shining, an m. night film, and of course twilight zone - all mixed together. i had this guy pegged to be as important as aranofsky & pt anderson after all their first films came out - now, we all know what happened with ST, so here's hoping he can prove he's an important director. can't wait.

and yeah, diaz's accent is laughable. is she from texas, boston, italy?
  • UK SAM
    STOOPS!
    cookie cutter BS.
    sorry Richard!
    cheers.
  • JJ
I actually got to see this LAST june, and it was done except for the arcade fire music (which im sure will rule) and a few FX. The movie was EXCELLENT, and this trailer is a great representation of it.
PS: Cameron isnt great and her accent is annoying for a while, but by the end shes actually quite good. The focus group after the movie agreed totally about this.
  • Wow I can only associate Live and Let Die with shitty SAW and it's sad that Richard Kelly couldn't pick a better song for this trailer besides that shitty shitty slowed down version. It's a shame because the music in Donnie Darko was great, that hallway scene and Gary Jules' cover of Mad World immediately comes to mind.
  • Am I crazy in thinking we saw a trailer/teaser for this last year?
  • i thought it was familiar. i saw the Twilight Zone episode. kinda squashes any real desire to go watch the movie... who knows. it looks promising, though...
  • Lux
    PUSH THE GODDAMN BUTTON!!
  • wasnt there another horror movie that had saw music in the trailer also?
  • I've seen a short film with the same synopsis but I don't know if it was based on Matheson's story.

Unfortunately, I've lost the name of the sucking short film.
  • Fir3Wolf
That really didn't interest me much at all, but points for using the Saw theme.
  • Richardp
Not sure if anyone's mentioned this yet but The Arcade Fire did the score for this movie. Or at least just Win and Regine. Should be interesting.
