Nimrod Antal to Direct Predators?

antal_predators

There’s a new rumor about the Robert Rodriguez-produced Predators, according to Latino Review: supposedly Nimrod Antal is at the top of the list to direct the film. Which would actually be great news, if true. What, you don’t recognize the name? Read more after the jump.

Nimrod Antal isn’t a name that most people know, but it should be. His debut feature Kontroll was a solid, weird thriller about ticket takers in the Budapest subway system. It created a unique underground world where misfits and drunks lived according to their own half-official rules. Antal followed that with Vacancy, which could have been just a cheap mid-point between the thriller and torture porn genres. But Antal made it into something much better, and until the ending cops out it is a tense, well-made flick. It’s slight, sure, but works in the thriller mode quite well. Most audiences passed it over in ‘07, which is a shame — the movie is worth a closer look. Antal also has Armored coming up, with Matt Dillon and Laurence Fishburne as armored car drivers who get involved in a divisive heist of their own truck.

So: bottom line: Antal can do tense, and though he’s never done action on the scale of what we’d expect to see in Predators, I’d be confident that he’s got the skills. In fact, I’d love to see him do something like this and be given a chance to work with a lot more money. But there are other people in the running, too. The film, written by Alex Litvak, at last report had about seven people in the running to direct. One, as we reported, is Neil Marshall (Doomsday, The Descent), who is also a great choice. Another could be Michael J. Basset, who helmed the upcoming Solomon Kane.

Litvak’s script is based on a Predator sequel treatment Rodriguez wrote 15 years ago, and will supposedly expand the predator universe. Fox has already announced July 7, 2010 as the film’s release date, so we’ll be hearing more about the final choice for director, and other details, relatively soon.

  • PRETTY COOL GUY
Hey guys my name is NIMROD
  • MrDisturbing
Well... his name is cool. I honestly would have prefered Marshall though.
    Nimrod... hehe.
  • That is going to one fast production if it is only a year away and they haven't picked a director yet.
  • Well, it is nice to know his parents thought highly of him...

But Vacancy was good, so I would be game. Although for now, I would prefer Marshall. This seems more him (even though to tell you the truth, huge action is none of what they are none for.)
  • I can't wait to see this movie, and future Alien installments.
  • sammyjankis
I am okay with this choice, he shows promise. He could take a shit and it would be better than the last two movies.
  • Totalimmortal
They should leave movies like predator and alien alone. They don't need to be re-made
  • jason B
russ, what about 'vacancy's ending did you feel was a copout? i like all of it, and am curious what disappointed you.
  • sammyjankis
He is probably referring to the fact that he ends up living.
  • NINJARTIST
Wow, spoiler warning? The article had me interested in checking it out.
  • sammyjankis
You had 3 years to not be spoiled.
  • Mike
This just keeps getting better and better. All these directors are great, but I have a feeling at the end of the day they'll settle for someone shitty. I can just feel it. That or the script will be so godawful that it ruins the reputation of the director for a very long time. Like X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
  • PRETTY COOL GUY
also, what the hell is that picture? i get the fact that you shopped it in 3 seconds flat and don't care, but still, have a little class, slashfilm. come on now.
  • GreatBigLion
They're all staring at him with this look in their faces:

"HE'S the director? Aw hell naw!"

Well, I can't judge Antal since I haven't seen any of his work. I always thought "Vacancy" was "No Vacancy", because the entire sign was the logo.
  • The First Predator movie with Arnold and Van Damn is my Favorite!! I hope they make it as good as that, but better. Which is going to be Hard, because that movie is a classic. They need to put someone who was as build as Arnold....
  • mchops
Van Damn? he was in predator?
  • Stu
no he was not but jesse ventura was! and lots of steroids....
  • I'm glad to see Fox treating one of their properties with some modicum of respect. Either Marshall or Antal are great choices for a Predator film. Oddly, I'm more interested in the prospect of a new Predator than a new Alien film.
  • Dan W
I don't think Neil Marshall is a good choice for this movie. And I hope Nimrod isn't a nimrod if he does end up directing.
  • I really liked Vacancy a lot, because it was an homage to Psycho without being that horrible Van Sant remake of Psycho. Good to see it getting some props.
  • dagreenman18
Wow, he's one "t' away for the most unfortunate name in history.
  • GreatBigLion
    Nimrod Tantal?

    Nimrod Anttal?

    Nimrod Antalt?

    I don't get it.
  • rick
    *facepalm*
  • Stu
    anal, he's talking about anal
  • GreatBigLion
Do'h! I thought he meant adding a "t". Still so obvious, though.
  • I don't know this line should be treated with respect and whoever directs the film has huge shoes to fill.....
  • Rockie
at this rate Yanni might get a call....
  • Enzo Moran
I know its immature, but I always laugh when I hear his name.
If Marshall doesn't do this, Antal should.
  • Edward
Because Armored looks so promising...... Hope Neil Marshall gets this if this remake really needs to happen.
  • Damn! I was hoping that Rodriguez would be directing it himself. He surely can do action and gore and whatever this franchise needs to get it back on the top shelf.
I have had bad experiences with little-known directors, trying to do blockbusters.
  • helicopters
leave it to fox to give the next installment to a once-great franchise to some nimrod.
  • Gee Halen
If he is to make this movie it will make me a proud Hungarian (of course it will turn out well)
  • Gee Halen
I mean: of course IF it turns out well
