Director M Night Shyamalan has finally launched his official website. And as you might expect, its far from traditional. MNightShyamalan.com transports you into a dark mansion (possibly haunted) where you walk around and uncover clues which grant you access to rooms/locations from Shyamalan’s film history. I know this probably sounds like one of those annoying flash sites, where you’d rather just have easy access to a menu. And yes, it is that, but Night makes it worth your time by providing some extremely honest thoughts about his past films.

For example, in one hallway I replaced a shard of glass to a broken mirror on the wall and was transported to the kitchen from Unbreakable. You might be wondering, “Why the kitchen?” One of the clues I found in the room revealed that Night’s favorite scene from the film is the kitchen scene where Bruce Willis’ son threatens to shoot him to prove he is “unbreakable”. And yes, you get to watch it.

Other information I learned about the film from the room is that it was inspired by Pulp Fiction, Superman and Dog Day Afternoon. That the other title he considered for the project was “No Ordinary Man”. But if you explore further, you’ll find some pretty honest tidbits from Night. for example, he talks about a moment he ripped off from another movie and the moment that he thought the film has failed.

Each room is presented with music from the original film. I’m tempted to call  this more of an experience than a website, but I don’t want to oversell it. It’s definitely worth checking out.

cool, that's my favorite scene too. 'no shooting friends, joseph'
  • Haha, while that's a funny line, that's actually one of my least favorite scenes in that movie, which I liked a lot. I just thought that whole scene unfolding came off as ridiculous...

I absolutely love M. Night Shyamalan. I know a lot of people say this, it seems, but I am honestly the only person left who still loves this guy. I mean there is not one of his films that I thought was even mediocre. They are all amazing films in my mind. I like him now as much as I did when I first saw The Sixth Sense (which I DON'T think is his best movie).

Anyway, the site is awesome. He is always doing something untraditional but it works. Too bad most of it is so misunderstood.

He is the Picasso of our day.

I am not saying this in a mean or sarcastic way.

What about the happening did you like? What aspect of that film makes it better than mediocre?

    @Michael_W
Well, first off, I think a lot of people either don't know or have forgotten that it is meant to be in the style of a "B" movie. Shyamalan had mentioned that before the film came out. So knowing that I think changes a lot of the criticism.

A lot of people complain about the cheesy lines and bad acting but that is all intentional and fitting to the style of the movie. the plot alone is very "B" movie. I think Shyamalan has a really great talent for creating a very distinct tone to his films.

I think as a viewer you have to know where the director is coming from. It's kinda like Michael Bay (who by no stretch of the imagination an excellent filmmaker) but anybody who goes into a Michael Bay movie hoping for a solid plot and Oscar worthy performances is going to be let down. But that doesn't necessarily mean the film sucks.

Another Shyamalan example is Lady in the Water. I think the main fault with that movie was the marketing. As with the Village, everyone expected it to be the scariest thing since The Exorcist, but that's not at all what Shyamalan set out to make and it's not what he made.

So I guess I was the only one who liked the happening cause I understood his intension's and thought it was very well executed.

I am a huge Village fan. I think the movie is brilliant fyi.

That said I cannot as you do find very many good qualities in the Happening.

Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez made some wonderful and entertaining B movie films with Grindhouse. Crank is another good example. These movies forgo plot and character for fun and cheap thrills. I just can't find any fun in the Happening, infact watching that movie is really the opposite of fun.

Sorry but the Village was terrible, the story was bad, it was incredibly predictable and sorry to say some of it was very poorly directed, especially with Bryce Howard.

Lady in the Water, didnt bother with his completely egotistical attempt at a movie, "for his kids". Make it on your own time and let them watch it at home.

The Happening. Just because he sees the finished product and knows its crap and says its supposed to be like a B movie, doesnt mean anything. It wasnt shot as a B movie, wasnt marketed as one and certainly didnt come off as one. It just came off as complete and utter junk. Although I'm no big fan of Tarantino and Rodriguez, but when you want to make a movie like a B movie, you MAKE A MOVIE LIKE A B MOVIE.

Sorry but he is just a poor director who had one good movie out of nowhere and even as the expectations for his films have gotten lower and lower, he cant live up to them anymore.

    INTENTIONAL FALLACY, WTF!
  • This sounds like a very interesting site... Cant wait to check it out... thanks for the heads up...

    Shyamalan rebirth
  • Johnny Gossamer
    He's stale.

    90's films, 90's website

I wonder if Rolan Emmerich has a website too

This guy has to be the most arrogant director of all time. Its no surprise that's he's created a site that lets him spout off about his own films in totally unecessary detail. Watch any of the bonus features on his DVDs and you'll get the same crap. Or suffer through him putting himself in his own movies at your own peril.
  • Colonel_Kurtz
That looks pretty good. I have now seen 2 more minutes of The Happening than I'd planned on ever watching.
  • The twist is: It's not his site! AAH!

I'm sorry, but someone had to do it.
  • quintushalls
Why is M. Night Shyamalan's website better than his recent movies? The Happening still makes me vomit.
  • I was thinking that!
  • A nice design for a site
  • Weyland_Yutani
Surely this website can not match the awesomeness of Michaelbay.com

    Hi,
I am a writer, and have just finished writing a biography on the life of Shri Billy Arjan Singh, named 'SOUL OF DUDHWA' (Harper Collins has kindly consented to publish the book); the great wildlife conservationist from India, who belongs to your home state of U.P. The book features his role in the creation of Dudhwa National Park, and his life long struggle in the research and the rehabilitation of the big cats in the forests of North Lakhimpur Kheri Division.
Today as he narrates his tales to me at 93 years of age, I can see the desperation in his eyes to carry on a little further to put in some more years of dedication to his subjects, adding on to those glorious 60yrs, which he has put in to the service in protecting the flora and fauna of these forests of Dudhwa.
During my writing of the book, as I researched the topic, I found it be a very interesting story for adaption to silver screen. As the rehabilitation research work of Billy was marred with a similar allegation as was the case with Elsa the lioness of the 'Born free' fame. AS fate would have it her detractors claimed to have shot her dead and eventually blamed her for the death of 22 people in those days. Anyway the twist in the tail is that Billy's tigress Tara survived all the allegations and survived in the jungle and eventually bore cubs also.

It can be a cinematographers delight as this story can have the thrill,of a real life story, the drama of Billy trying to save Tara and another very strong character wanting to have her shot dead. The pressure on Billy mounted as the no. of people killed were increasing, and after every tragedy he would inspect the body and try to reason out with the wildlife officials that the eering tigress is not Tara by explaining the way the kill was taken, or the no. of tigress involved in the kill, or sometimes the pugs were simply pointing to the ering tiger to be a male.
I have some very valuable research and photographs in the story and can provide you with all the facts and an indepth insight into the subject.
I need an appointment with you, if you are interested. My mobile no. in India is 09872008704.
