The first footage from James Cameron’s Avatar was screened to over 1,000 European Industry attendees at CinemaExpo International in Amsterdam, and some of the early buzz has begun to leak out. 24 minutes of footage was screened in all, most of which came from the first third of the film, but THR notes that “there were also glimpses from unfinished portions of later battle scenes.” What did everyone think of the first glimpse of the film that everyone is already touting as “revolutionary”?  The reactions after the jump are, for the most part, spoiler free.

“The Insider” files his report on ComingSoon: “jaw-dropping experience.” … “3-D until now has been used as a gimmick.” On the human characters inhabiting their Avatars: “It took my breath away. I thought–just like you guys–that I’ve seen it all with Gollum, or The Hulk, but Cameron has done it again. These creatures seem so real, that within minutes you forget you’re watching an enormous and very blue CGI character. Even the eyes are totally convincing. The characters have real personalities and a soul.” … “How the hell is it possible that I never once felt like I’ve been watching a movie where almost everything comes out of a computer?” … “The effects are in a league of their own. After some disappointing or even pointless 3-D movies, Avatar maybe the first movie where 3-D is properly utilized.”

“Anonymous” over on IESB: “It makes me want to create a time machine like Cartman from South Park, so that I don’t have to wait till the 18th of December to watch the finished movie. If it’s anything like the scenes I saw, it’s going to be one of the best movies of the decade.”

Unique Cinema Systems Nord on Twitter: “stunning, literally jawdropping. Amazing visuals unlike any before seen, with incredible detail.” … “CGI was photorealistic, characters look really real. Believe the hype, this movie will be massive!” … Cameron told audience each frame of finished film takes 30-50 hrs to render, then double that up for 3D.”

A scooper at MarketSaw: “The clips were amazing” … “You will NOT believe the detail.” … “The world outside is amazing. It all lives, breathes and works.” … “You will not believe the amount of leaves that look like someone created that jungle for real.” … “Little fireflies and birds fly through the shots without being there. You just take them as the world, like a dove in Central Park. It’s not placed there, it lives there and just happens to be in the shot.” … “There’s a shot of leaves somewhere which is so photorealistic you don’t want to think it’s CGI. You believe this world from the get-go. It’s there, you don’t need to believe it because you will experience it.”

GJKooijman on Twitter: “is mindblown” … “Still in awe of meeting James Cameron… Avatar will change movie industry forever.. thank you Jim” … “It’s nothing you can imagine, it’s real. Cameron made a new planet and took a cam there.” … “THIS WILL CHANGE MOVIES FOREVER. Trust me, it will.”

Sperling on Twitter: “It’s official! The footage from “Avatar” shown at Cine Expo was amazing. Absolutely stunning in 3D. Should be a huge hit.”

Head on over to any of the linked sites for detailed descriptions of the footage screened. The photos above, courtesy of UCSNord, were on display at the After Party.

Wow, I'm even more excited for this film now!

    ...if that's possible....
  • Tercotta
I'm trying awful hard not to get overhyped. This isn't helping. Also, is there a trailer in front of Transformers for this?
  • just saw ROTF and no there was no trailer. there was however a nice trailer for The Last Airbender which i hadnt seen til then
  • DonaldDuck
Sam Worthington said there's a big chance you won't be seeing a trailer for Avatar.
  • Chrad
Interesting, but very possible with what I've been hearing about marketing. When did he say that?
  • mcgruff
i appreciate the idea of no trailer to increase excitement/not ruin the experience by showing it in 2d, but no way would a studio allow one of the biggest budget films of all time go without a massive marketing campaign.
  • skippy
...unless the studio concocts some other way of promoting the movie to general audiences, which would have to be something unique that no one has thought of yet.
  • OMFG, the images are so exciting. Looking more forward to this film than any other. This will rock.
  • when will the freaken release the trailer ???
  • that's what i want, even just a 1 min teaser will do for now.
  • Do you know if those picture up there are stills from the movie, or just production art?
  • gonna geek out here for a second, but let's say you take the low end of that 30 - 50 hrs for each frame rendered... so 30 hours.
1 hour of film is 86,400 frames... so we're claiming that each hour of this film is taking them 108,000 days to render?
they started rendering the first hour in 1714? oh sorry, for the 3d that'd be 1419.

    that's commitment!
  • MikeB
i'm sure they use more than one computer...
  • the comment didn't say 30 - 50 hrs for one computer. It's unheard of now a days for film rendering to be done on a single computer, all effect houses utilize render farms.
  • Switters
I think he is implying it would take a single computer 30-50 hours to render a frame. It sounds like his mind is really on the tech, which is good for me because I'm looking forward to the Avatar video game almost as much as the movie.
  • hmmm
Um guys this is being rendered on crays.
  • quintushalls
If we are talking 30 frames a second for 3 hours and 15 minutes of film (before cutting down footage..I think) at 50 hours a frame is (30 frames * 195 minutes * 2.08 days) equals = 12,168 days on 1 server.

Now, let's assume, if he is telling the truth, that they have more than 1 server working on it, like maybe a whole server farm of 100 servers.

that would be 12168/100 ~= 122 days to render. And with all the re-renderings, changed footage, and extra scenes, let's say it is 250 days. That seems more reasonable to me.
  • goldfarb
    try 3000+ render nodes....
I don't know how big Weta's farm is but ILM has been rendering on 3500+ nodes for years now...
  • SgtZim
I just read an article from 2006 that said ILM had 4000, so I'll bet they're up to almost 5000+ now , especially since they delivered three MAJOR FX films this summer. Weta's was at 3200 during LOTR so they're probably at ILM's number at the least by now.

I work at a small-ish shop and we'll have 3000 or 4000 procs in a few months (at 1000 now).
  • film runs at 24 fps, not 30
  • quintushalls
    Why wouldn't he use NTSC???
  • are you serious? NTSC is a format that was created for broadcast television in the United States. Not for film.
Film, since the 30s, has run at 24 frames per second (was around 18 before that).
When a film is broadcast on television they add frames using a method called pulldown, which creates an interlaced frame (one field from the prior frame and one field from the next frame) every three frames to change the 24 frame per second footage into 29.97 frames per second.
All film projector and all High Definition projectors installed in theaters around the WORLD project at 24 frames per second.
  • Thus the reason true Blu-ray moves (and "true" HDTVs) are 24p.
  • quintushalls
oh wow! Never knew that. Thanks! :)
  • A@ronW
yeah..if they rendered 1 frame at a time
  • I never really cared for the release of this flick until now. I mean, the concept art was okay, not amazing. James Cameron is cool, but I can wait for a flick of his, and the cast isn't so great that I Can't contain myself. But not a single bad word there, some saying it'll change Movies or that it's photrealistic, actually sounds great.
  • neil
how about the plot so far?
movies shouldn't be just about effects, don't get me wrong I'll be excited for this movie and I am sure it will be spectacular, but I wish someone would comment on something else besides the visuals.
  • quintushalls
I agree. But I still saw Transformers 2, even though some consider it the worst Michael Bay film since Pearl Harbor, in Imax mainly because it has the largest filmed explosion with people present in the Guinness World Records.
  • Lance_HBomb
Lol at the record. GWR is just looking for anything these days.
  • A@ronW
its james cameron. it will be an amazing plot. but not enough was shown for people to comment about it
  • Switters
WTB Hi-Res copy of that second image. Holy crap. Even that crappy little picture looks fantastic. I can't imagine this on a real IMAX in 3D.
  • Balaji
    I know this will Happen.....
  • Wow... this really does sound amazing. Its the first movie thats making me want to try out this new 3D.... The old one never worked for me. Dont know if it was because of my glasses or what, but it just never worked. So I haven't been jumping to see anything 3D now.

Anyway... Really looking forward to this,
  • Switters
3D still kind of sucks for us eyeglass wearers, but its far better than the old Red/Blue 3D. The glasses are larger and more solid so they sit in front of regular glasses with far less discomfort then the old cardboard ones. I'm hoping once 3D becomes more prevalent in homes LensCrafter will sell prescription ones. I'd gladly pay $300+ for a nice pair of my own right now.
  • As a glasses wearer myself, I agree that the new 3D shades are much more comfortable, but still somewhat lacking.

However, I was recently in Japan and took a tour of the NHK TV studio, where I saw a demo of their new "no glasses necessary" 3D system. It was a bit of a strain on the neck by the end of the 5 minute demo, but I can see this as the wave of the future in 3D technology.
  • Davey Pot
try being blind in one eye.
  • Balaji
I know this will Happen.....bcz i collected the details of this avatar for more than a year
  • Ah crap.I must find out turning ice age 3 if i can see 3-D movies---> Half blind in my right eye so i concentrate on my left one.(boxing with one eye sucks, trust meh).
Anyway i am so friggin bumped up for this film.Cameron has made history before and i also love Sam Worthington so i guess it will be a fantastic movie. If all goes according to plan i might see a movie multiple times in cinema for the first time.
  • I'm gonna have to say, after Cameron's boring 15 minute speech at the Ubisoft E3 Press Conference, I had sort of lost interest in this film, but all that excitement I had before has just come rushing back, only twice as strong.

I still say the uncanny valley is gap we will never cross, but I can't way to see how close to the other side Avatar brings us.
  • Switters
I just rewatched Animatrix the other night, and Final Flight of the Osiris comes pretty damn close to bridging the gap. Its a shame that movie didn't get released in theatres while Reloaded and Revolution did.
  • Chrad
Final Flight was released in cinemas, attached to 'Dreamcatcher'. Apparently lots of people walked out after it played.

The complete 'Animatrix' had a few screenings in cinemas, but they were pretty much one-offs.
  • William_Wright
    i. cannot. wait.
  • rockinrors
We all knew is would be! :D
  • Captain Awesome
I am so fucking jealous of these people :(

After twelve years, God is back.

Actually I'm curious if a prototype version of Intel Larrabee cGPU was used to render this.

Intel Larrabee is in the order of 20 times as powerful as the top end server CPU's at the moment and is projected to cost around half as much as just one server CPU.

Apparently Pixar will start using Larrabee in the movies they're making at some point as well so its possible we will see a significantly more powerful set up rendering significantly better looking CGI.

With the advances in cGPU and GPGPU technology your talking about tech that costs 500-600 dollars and in flops is twenty times as powerful as the 20 thousand dollar set ups it could replace.

We are talking about a new generation of CGI in effect.

Since we are talking about going from 10 dollars a gigaflop to 25 cents a gigaflop render farms can afford to be smaller or they can afford to make them much more powerful for the same amount.

I think the effect could be amazing in the longer term considering we could have a CGI movie in IMAX that took advantage of the screen with full resolution.

I won't hold my breath though because even 4K and 3D are only pushing 4 million pixels and IMAX can push 100 million I believe lol.
  • Travis McGee
The trailer might be released with the 6th Harry Potter film. Since it will probably be the highest grossing film this Summer (and probably year.)
  • Brian
There's no 2 ways about it...James Cameron is the man. Plain and simple!
  • LuMendz
This might actually be the first IMAX movie I might watch. I always thought they were gimmicky and over-priced here, but I WILL watch this in IMAX.
Why won't you release the trailer, Mr. Cameron?!?
  • Same reason why you're not supposed to peek at your Christmas presents.

...The longer you hold out, the experience is SO MUCH the sweeter!
