The first footage from James Cameron’s Avatar was screened to over 1,000 European Industry attendees at CinemaExpo International in Amsterdam, and some of the early buzz has begun to leak out. 24 minutes of footage was screened in all, most of which came from the first third of the film, but THR notes that “there were also glimpses from unfinished portions of later battle scenes.” What did everyone think of the first glimpse of the film that everyone is already touting as “revolutionary”?  The reactions after the jump are, for the most part, spoiler free.

“The Insider” files his report on ComingSoon: “jaw-dropping experience.” … “3-D until now has been used as a gimmick.” On the human characters inhabiting their Avatars: “It took my breath away. I thought–just like you guys–that I’ve seen it all with Gollum, or The Hulk, but Cameron has done it again. These creatures seem so real, that within minutes you forget you’re watching an enormous and very blue CGI character. Even the eyes are totally convincing. The characters have real personalities and a soul.” … “How the hell is it possible that I never once felt like I’ve been watching a movie where almost everything comes out of a computer?” … “The effects are in a league of their own. After some disappointing or even pointless 3-D movies, Avatar maybe the first movie where 3-D is properly utilized.”

“Anonymous” over on IESB: “It makes me want to create a time machine like Cartman from South Park, so that I don’t have to wait till the 18th of December to watch the finished movie. If it’s anything like the scenes I saw, it’s going to be one of the best movies of the decade.”

Unique Cinema Systems Nord on Twitter: “stunning, literally jawdropping. Amazing visuals unlike any before seen, with incredible detail.” … “CGI was photorealistic, characters look really real. Believe the hype, this movie will be massive!” … Cameron told audience each frame of finished film takes 30-50 hrs to render, then double that up for 3D.”

A scooper at MarketSaw: “The clips were amazing” … “You will NOT believe the detail.” … “The world outside is amazing. It all lives, breathes and works.” … “You will not believe the amount of leaves that look like someone created that jungle for real.” … “Little fireflies and birds fly through the shots without being there. You just take them as the world, like a dove in Central Park. It’s not placed there, it lives there and just happens to be in the shot.” … “There’s a shot of leaves somewhere which is so photorealistic you don’t want to think it’s CGI. You believe this world from the get-go. It’s there, you don’t need to believe it because you will experience it.”

GJKooijman on Twitter: “is mindblown” … “Still in awe of meeting James Cameron… Avatar will change movie industry forever.. thank you Jim” … “It’s nothing you can imagine, it’s real. Cameron made a new planet and took a cam there.” … “THIS WILL CHANGE MOVIES FOREVER. Trust me, it will.”

Sperling on Twitter: “It’s official! The footage from “Avatar” shown at Cine Expo was amazing. Absolutely stunning in 3D. Should be a huge hit.”

Head on over to any of the linked sites for detailed descriptions of the footage screened. The photos above, courtesy of UCSNord, were on display at the After Party.

---Almost half a billion dollars for this unoriginal,
    over-produced, circle-jerk techno slop?

You want to watch animation that's cool?
---stick with the best of Japanimation.

if it's a two hour movie and each frame takes a rough average of 40 hours to render it would take over 700 years to make this film...

    2hrs*60min/hr*60sec/min*24fr/sec*40hrs/fr = 6912000 hrs of rendering time
    6912000 hrs % 24 hrs/day % 365 days/year = 789 years of rendering time.

So either its short, it takes less time that that to render all but the most complex frames or its not all 3D.

I don't pretend to be an expert of this film, so I honestly can't answer to those options, but the maths do not lie.

It may be an exaggeration--but at the same time they would undoubtedly have numerous teams doing different scenes at the same time with multiple computers with multiple processors / graphics cards / whatever.

im gonna wet myself on December 18th
  • gardenshock
im going to piss my pants on December 18th... ya, im actually pretty sure of it
  • As amped as I am about this movie (and the game),

I find it awfully hard to believe that each frame took 30-50hrs (x2) to render. It would take them 125 days to simply render a single second of footage.

I don't have the facts on how much time they've spent on it though, I know Cameron's had the idea for 14 years.

Here's to it living up to the hype!

james cameron is one of my childhood favorites and this could be his best movie!!! i can't wait to see this movie!! it has been awhile since i have been this excited about a movie, not since the fountain! i love this kind of stuff!!!
  • topheavy
James, if you are paying attention: I love you man.
  • My sister got to take part in filming and I'm so amazingly excited right now.
  • mcgruff
Very cool. what was she doing on the production?
  • Damn it, Peter you love back to the future, right? Do you have an extra Time Traveling Delorean hanging around?
  • Weyland_Yutani
I love that they have shown so little to the masses. This is something that Spielberg knew how to do, making the anticipation for Close Encounters, ET.Jurassic PArk enough to bring in the audience.

A lesson Spielberg learned himself through his own luck - don't show the shark until you absolutely need to.

At this point, I don't think Cameron has to show anything. The salivating desire is already there, spurred on by the jealousy of the few that have gotten a little glimpse.

Keep giving out random tastes and let the audience scramble over each other to get in line. Just like they did back B. I. (before internet).

If there was a better word for epic, it would be Avatar.
  • mcgruff
This movie is going to be avatar.
  • thebertosaurus
    Avatar on so many levels.
  • Joeda
So they can release 24 minutes of footage and still not have a 1:30 trailer ready for the biggest blockbuster release of the year?!?!? WHY MUST YOU DO THIS TO US CAMERON?! WHYYY!!?!?!?!?
  • This makes me unbelievably pumped for this film. I hope I get a chance to see it in good 3D and REAL Imax.
  • keef
CG that looks photo-realistic? My mind can't comprehend such a thing. i cant wait to see this, not out of all excitement, but also curiosity.
  • oddly enough The Last Airbender looks good. It's a pure teaser trailer (i doubt that's footage from the film), but it has potential.

i'm going to see Avatar no matter what happens (and hopefully it sets a bar for blockbuster movies for some time...as Cameron has a habbit of doing)
  • Phontsolo
I love revolutionary CGI, but what about the story? Acting? Voice acting?
  • β
hype hype hype hype hype hype
  • I would be lying if I didn't say I'm a little excited to see the trailer now. I'm defiantly Excited to see the Avatar trailer! There saying Avatar will change the film industry. It's not everyday you hear a critic say a 3D film is going to change movie history. This has me wondering what the experience is going to be like? I'm defiantly looking forward to the trailer now.
  • the ship in the first photo looks like the ship from Event Horizon...Im so excited for this movie
  • Rockie
i too am sick of the cock teases......but i'm gonna be first in line so i will hush

god i want this film laced around my eyeballs
  • Jawmuncher
    Now I am EXCITED!
  • davo
I really hate to be the negative nancy here, but im still not completely convinced. it takes more than amazing special effects to make a good movie. I mean, look at transformers, revolutionary effects but still in the 30's at rotten tomatoes.
  • Colonel_Kurtz

  • mcgruff
    Peter,
is that concept art from the film or just random unrelated concept art?
  • IKEACAR
Oh my freakin gawd guy! It's sweet that Cameron spent $300 million to make some computer animated leaves look like real leaves! I used a $100 HD camcorder and filmed some real leaves outside and holy cow, they look like real leaves on the screen!
  • Erik
LOL! Yeah that´s why I can´t stand reports like these. The writer makes a great job imo but in the end it´s still not enough. Who needs leaves on an alien planet was my first thought. Wasn´t the planet supposed to be filled with alien plant life and stuff? Same goes for that concept art. It looks good, but so does most concept art by skilled artists working on a major production. Hell, the concept art for all the star wars prequels were much better than the final film.
  • I'm so ready to see something. I don't care what it is. For the people that got to see a glimpse of it, to hear them rave about how amazing it looks makes so happy. We usually have to wait for amazing effects from ILM, glad to see that someone else is pushing the envelope. A new day is upon us.
  • TheHick9
lovin this news, i can see this being real real big, cant bloody wait
  • Dani
whoa!! Glad to hear it's living up to expectations and more
  • LuMendz
This might actually be the first IMAX movie I might watch. I always thought they were gimmicky and over-priced here, but I WILL watch this in IMAX.
Why won't you release the trailer, Mr. Cameron?!?
  • Same reason why you're not supposed to peek at your Christmas presents.

...The longer you hold out, the experience is SO MUCH the sweeter!
  • Brian
There's no 2 ways about it...James Cameron is the man. Plain and simple!
  • Travis McGee
The trailer might be released with the 6th Harry Potter film. Since it will probably be the highest grossing film this Summer (and probably year.)
  • TheDarkKnight86
Actually I'm curious if a prototype version of Intel Larrabee cGPU was used to render this.

Intel Larrabee is in the order of 20 times as powerful as the top end server CPU's at the moment and is projected to cost around half as much as just one server CPU.

Apparently Pixar will start using Larrabee in the movies they're making at some point as well so its possible we will see a significantly more powerful set up rendering significantly better looking CGI.

With the advances in cGPU and GPGPU technology your talking about tech that costs 500-600 dollars and in flops is twenty times as powerful as the 20 thousand dollar set ups it could replace.

We are talking about a new generation of CGI in effect.

Since we are talking about going from 10 dollars a gigaflop to 25 cents a gigaflop render farms can afford to be smaller or they can afford to make them much more powerful for the same amount.

I think the effect could be amazing in the longer term considering we could have a CGI movie in IMAX that took advantage of the screen with full resolution.

I won't hold my breath though because even 4K and 3D are only pushing 4 million pixels and IMAX can push 100 million I believe lol.

    i. cannot. wait.
  • I'm gonna have to say, after Cameron's boring 15 minute speech at the Ubisoft E3 Press Conference, I had sort of lost interest in this film, but all that excitement I had before has just come rushing back, only twice as strong.

I still say the uncanny valley is gap we will never cross, but I can't way to see how close to the other side Avatar brings us.
  • Switters
I just rewatched Animatrix the other night, and Final Flight of the Osiris comes pretty damn close to bridging the gap. Its a shame that movie didn't get released in theatres while Reloaded and Revolution did.
  • Chrad
Final Flight was released in cinemas, attached to 'Dreamcatcher'. Apparently lots of people walked out after it played.

The complete 'Animatrix' had a few screenings in cinemas, but they were pretty much one-offs.
  • Ah crap.I must find out turning ice age 3 if i can see 3-D movies---> Half blind in my right eye so i concentrate on my left one.(boxing with one eye sucks, trust meh).
Anyway i am so friggin bumped up for this film.Cameron has made history before and i also love Sam Worthington so i guess it will be a fantastic movie. If all goes according to plan i might see a movie multiple times in cinema for the first time.
