For the last couple years, director DJ Caruso and his Disturbia and Eagle Eye star Shia LaBeouf were talking about adapting Brian K Vaughn’s post-apocalyptic series Y: The Last Man. It was an ambitious plan, which could have led to multiple films tackling the bulk of the sixty-issue series. Then, while promoting Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, LaBeouf said he was backing away from Y because the character was too much like his Transformers character. But now, because rising stars almost never say they’ll never do a project, LaBeouf says it could still happen.

Y: The Last Man is my favorite comic book,” said LaBeouf. “It’s also DJ Caruso’s favorite comic book. We DO want to make it. It’s just too “Sam Witwicky”…It’s not as big as a variation for me. I want to do something that’s foreign.” But the film isn’t anywhere near being ready to go, and in fact Caruso’s next picture is now said to be the seemingly superfluous Jack and the Beanstalk. But asked about whether he might do the film in a year or two, Shia predictably told Collider “Absolutely, man!” Because why would he say no?

[Brian K] Vaughn and [Carl] Ellsworth and DJ are writing the script now. The script is not ready to be shot. DJ is making a different movie right now. He’s making “Jack and the Beanstalk”. There’s just other things going on with DJ and I wouldn’t want to make the movie with anybody else because he loves it like I do. But I don’t think Vaughn is trying to give it to anybody else. I think that it is something that’s very realistic, it’s just not in the pipe for the next year.

Y: The Last Man is about Yorick, an amateur escape artist who really isn’t much like Sam Witwicky at all, who is one of two male beings left on Earth after a mysterious plague kills males of all species. The other male is Yorick’s Capuchin monkey, Ampersand. The series details Yorick’s journey, aided by Agent 355, to reach geneticist Allison Mann and, eventually, Yorick’s girlfriend Beth. Radical politics, male impersonators and cloning play a big part as society crumbles and re-forms around the surviving female population.

Please God, do NOT let Shia LaBeouf destroy the greatest series ever written.

When I read the book I said to myself I hope to God that they dont make a movie out of this because it will ruin it. Maybe if the made it into a series at most but a movie no, I mean look what happened to Steven King movies. BUT!! If they did make a movie as much as I didnt want Shia to play the part either, I think he would be the only one to be able to pull it off. Now its not that I dont lke Shia he is one of my favorite actors right now, but I think it is for the same reason he is saying his part is to much like Sam in Transformers, along with his other movies. Just a normal guy that is put into the wrong place at the wrong time but still makes you laugh through the movie. So lets give the guy a break let do a drama where we were mad at him because he actually didnt make us laugh in the movie and say to one another man he needs a fucking great movie to make up for that one then BOOM!!! Y the Last Man... You know its true so embrace it.......

Nowadays no actors play the parts where they are close to the actual age, so if thats the main reason Shia is in the running that is complete bull. I love this comic and i think it would be a shame for him to get it cause of his age. The mans acting is pretty one note. He has those rare moments where he can actually make something come off witty and humorous, but thats not enough for Yorick. Ben Foster would be amazing as would Joseph Gordon-Levitt even though neither look the part, but thats always something they can play around with. Brian K Vaughn being invloved makes things go down a bit easier but DJ Caruso? Seriously? Oh come on people, as of yet the movie is not looking like it would be very good. DJ did say that he would use a real monkey for Ampersand, who might out act Shia, just saying. When it comes to this ,nothing is making me happy.

I am not seeing how Yorrick and Sam have many similarities at all, other than being young men in extraordinary circumstances. Makes me wonder if he's actually read the series at all or if he's just saying he has because it's suddenly become "fashionable" (and I use that word very loosely) for Actors and Actresses to take interest in comic book projects.
  • Mike
Saying the main character in Transformers is too much like the main character in Y:tLM are too similar is erroneous since that implies there is a character or even characters in Transformers. No. Big CGI Robots smashing the shit out of each other, yep. Human characters? Not so much.
  • i really don't want shia labeouf to be yorick.... this film needs a not-so-familiar face. i feel like people (myself included) will find ourselves comparing him as yorick to his other characters.
  • tHE
I like this too. Shia is one of those actors who don't really act... they just play themselves. His comments about Sam don't only pertain to his Transformers performances, but all his performances (sans that one movie where he was mentally ill and maybe another I can't think of right now). All I'm going to be thinking if he's on screen is... there's Shia. Not Yorick.

i actually think this was the role Shia was meant to play. he really is the best choice. besides the characters being young and caught up in some shit, there are differences. wonder if he's read the series. Say what you will, but i can get behind this 100% Optimistic. he's fine as Sam. miscast in eagle eye, but the greatest game was actually enjoyable.
  • I haven't read this at all, but I think the concept sounds awesome. I still like LaBeouf (holdover from "Even Stevens" back in the day) and he and Caruso seem to have a good little rapport. Whether it happens in two years or further, I'd like to check it out. I just wonder which Hitchcock film it'll be compared to.
  • Terrance
    Harrison Ford

He is yorick, and he can handle younger ladies no problem. So it should be him hands down

And Robert downy jr as the monkey

I just want to time warp Ryan Reynolds for this role. He would be perfect, with the snark and all. Some of the illustrations in the comic even look like they were modeled on Reynolds. But, Gordon-Levitt's a pretty good idea. LaBeouf doesn't have the charisma.

Shia would be very fitting for Yorrick i think, i hope they make it someday. And if Brian is involved in the script and what not, i think it could be really really good! (but i still think the comicbook would be more fitting for a tvseries. Fables on the other hand should not be made in to a tvseries, and be made to a movie instead. they have to have a large freaking budget to pull fables off as a tv-series)

foster and levitt are great actors but they will be in there 30's by the time the movie comes around to start shooting yorrick is like 22-23 years old and in college sorry as much has it may sadden people shia looks the part and is right age
  • Travis McGee
Yorrick has already graduated college by the time the book starts.
  • and he can't be the only actor that fits age/look. plus, i don't think he looks much like yorick. yorick has more chiseled facial features, shia is kind of round faced. i can't see him acting the part either. how many film adaptations of comic books/video games have an actor who nails appearance but butchers the character?
  • RKO
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a good choice along with Ben Foster who I think is an excellent actor he may not have the look but i think he would be a good choice too.
  • DashRiprock
Ben Foster would be a real good choice
  • GreatBigLion
Hopefully this project comes to fruition. "Y: The Last Man" is also one of my favorite comic books, and knowing that Brian K. Vaughn has a hand in the script removes my worries that the movie will be a super-condensed, incoherent mess. Not sure if D.J. Caruso is the right guy to direct, but I remain optimistic.
  • Paul Blart Mall Cop
Shia is the greatest actor of all time!

I mean did you see ROTF. wow. Shia should be in all movies!
  • And I am surprised, no has called Shia "Leboof" yet. Now I just opened it up for you idiots to do it.

You know what else is hillarious? Shamalamadingdong and Stanley Kuprick. Oh wait, is that last name someone that is amazing. Well I guess I can't make fun of his name. But if I can't make fun of his name, I can't make fun of other's? Now I will have to find another weak point. I can't just say he is bad, because I don't have the guts and I want everyone to notice that his name is so awfully hillarious. Ha! Laboof. It's still funny! Well, I guess I will have to judge people on character now...
  • boogers international
    who are you talking to?
  • God, man. I am talking to God...
  • I don't get it. LaBeof excuse for not doing Y is because it's like my Transformers character.

The proper response would be "I'm not doing Y because it is to much like my Transformer's, Disturbia, Eagle Eye, I Robot, and The Greatest Game Ever Played character."

    Now that's more like it...
  • I'm more worried about DJ Caruso directing than Shia acting. Please get a better director!
  • nelson
maybe you are not seeing it buddy he is not saying they are exactly alike because they are not.All he is saying is at the moment with both transformers movies/eagle eye/ hell even disturbia. He has played an everyday normal guy who gets thrown into in extraordinary situation which is what happens to yorrick in Y if you think about it he is not saying they are carbon copies of each other.
  • The fact that Shia compares Sam to Yorick proves that he is a one trick pony. If he can't see the differences he will never learn to play another character anyways.
  • nelson
well the title character is about 23 or 24 at most
  • Jimmy
The main problem is the word "man" in the title. I'm not sure LaBeouf yet qualifies.

Maybe if it were, "The Last Boy" then I could support it.
  • bgordes
Interesting comment. Y the Last Man has a lot to do with manhood. What it means to be a man compared to a boy and to mature as a person. If Shia could show that character development in the films, it could be the role that takes him from boyish actor to manhood.

On that note, I agree with many others. Gordon-Levitt seems perfect for the role in my eyes.
  • tHE
Holy Moly! I remember that guy! He was in the Lookout, I think... I also think I'm the only one who saw that film but anyways, that's besides the point.

Really.. when Shia said he was out, I was actually pretty happy.
  • CaLabLoC
I dont know what the big deal is i really did not want to see shia as yorick. In fact i really despised the idea, but probably would have watched it anyway and bashed it for having shia... but i digress.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be an amazing choice for yorick... i dont know why people are soo hung over shia not being yorick

i give him props though he did keep the project alive!
    and that i do respect
  • Isaac
Do not know why I did not think of Gordon-Levitt for this part. He should be the top pick for this role as he would actually have the acting chops to realistically portray the more emotional scenes that are contained in the graphic novel. I just hope who ever is in charge of this doesn't ruin such a great piece of literature.
  • dagreenman18
At least he realizes he's a one note actor.Hope this means someone with Talent will step up to the plate.
