Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo Teaser Trailer

Ponyo
Walt Disney Pictures has released the movie trailer for the American redub of Legendary Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s latest movie Ponyo. The film will be released on over 800 screens, the largest American release yet for Miyazaki. And the trailer features some fantastic visuals which will hopefully appeal to the masses. You can see this trailer in theaters this weekend attached to My Sister’s Keeper or watch it now after the jump. As always, leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale The Little Mermaid, the film tells the story of a baby goldfish named Ponyo (voiced by Noah Cyrus) who desires to be a human, and gets her wish. She runs away from her home in the sea and befriends a five-year-old human boy named Sosuke (Frankie Jonas). Other cast members include Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, Cloris Leachman, Liam Neeson, Lily Tomlin and Betty White.

Watch the trailer in High Definition on Apple. Ponyo will hit theaters on August 14th 2009.

I always enjoy watching Miyazaki films, and this one looks like it would be fun to watch.

This just made my gf squeal like a little girl. And by gf, I mean me.

    MUST SEE!!!!!

Looks good. Rather watch a subbed version instead. Just preference here.

fourth...and ya didnt see why spirited away is so good.

    Then don't bother with this.

This was already released in my country, and I don't remember one of the sentences in the trailer... Anyway, this is a childish Miyazaki (like Totoro), but as always very enjoyable for adults too. Highly recommended.

Definitely watching this. Although I don't think it will be one of Miyazaki's best but looks good nonetheless.
  • So refreshing to see some form of old school animation sometimes.
  • Fir3Wolf
I've seen all the directors films and this won't be missed by me at all. Looks really good.

Spirited Away looked much more intriguing.

God, they really eff these trailers up at Disney. Such awful loud superlative-laden messes they make of them.
Ponyo seems wonderful though, but I think I'd prefer the subtitled version.
  • This makes me very worried. I saw Ponyo twice at the cinema in Japan and was swept away by it's beautiful visuals, score and story. Complimenting the story however, are touches of Japanese culture and life that I feel the English dub might make seem ridiculous. I know Disney want to make loot from this, but for anyone reading this at Slashfilm please seek out the Japanese version with subtitles.
  • They did a remarkable job with the last couple....
  • I enjoyed that trailer immensely.
  • Miyazaki's films are always so beautiful, interesting, and fun. Judging from this trailer, it seems like that trend will continue.

BTW, did anyone realize this is his first film dealing with the ocean as a central environment? Most of his films have always dealt with the sky and flying. This is a little original for him.

I can't wait. I know a subtitled version would be better, but I will take the dubbed and enjoy watching it on the big screen.
  • egyptnation
man, i would totally go see this in theatres but i hate dubbed movies. so i'll have to wait for the dvd, i guess. or hopefully i can find the original version subbed at some arthouse theatre or something.
  • I seem to remember seeing Howl's Moving Castle subtitled in the theater, so there might be a chance that Ponyo will get a similar dual release.

    *dances around the room*

Hayao Miyazaki is amazing. I have everything he's done!!!! So excited. *squeal*
  • "You can see this trailer in theaters this weekend attached to My Sister’s Keeper or watch it now after the jump."

I am pretty sure that 95% of readers are going to see it now after the jump...
  • Looks good. I will be the first one to admit I have never seen a Miyazaki film.

I will also be the first one to admit I am an idiot and have a lot of catching up to do.
  • Oh wait, I own Kiki's Delivery Service! I love Kiki's Delivery Service!

Damn it, I need to watch more movies...
  • tenno
    All animation is dubbed.
I think think people are being too hard on the recent Miyazaki english language releases. In general I do prefer original sound mixes (ALWAYS for live action films) but when the music and background effects are kept and treated differently than over-dubbing its less of an issue.
  • Did you just say all animation is dubbed? What are you smoking?
  • tenno
Yes, the sounds you hear are not actually coming out of the characters mouths. All the audio tracks whether voice, background, or effects are from an original source. Its not like live action where mics are picking up dialogue coming directly from the character and over dubbing loses the distinct and/or minute characteristics from any sound from the background.
Any voice work is coming from actors in a sound stage then placed with the animation regardless of language.

time to feel like a human being again....man i love this guy

Looks fantastic! Not sure if can match the greatness that is Spirited Away, but one can hope.
  • Kelsey
cant wait to see it. i have spirited away on DVD and if this is anything like that was, it MUST be good.
  • missannie
It was sooo good! I laughed so much! I just saw this movie yesterday at the premiere in Berkeley. I was suprised more people didn't know about it.
  • MirriToonGirl
yeah I think that its great that this is going to theater, but I would just like to say that Disney always ruins everything... they didn't have enough with High School Musical... now they have to ruin Anime too.... this sux disney is always doing this... they better not ruin Anime, I would so be pissed off if that happends.
