Teen Wolf Remake In The Works. Sigh.

teen_wolf_michael_j_fox

Sometimes it’s difficult to stay positive. Moviehole reports that Warner Brothers is in the early stages of putting together a Teen Wolf remake. They’re going out to writers now, so if you’ve got a comedic take that uses lycanthropy as an allegory for puberty, now’s the time to tell your story to a guy in a suit. Maybe you could argue for casting Jaden Smith, if he hasn’t already committed to be the male lead in an equally unnecessary Teen Witch remake.

I can be patient with remakes; if there’s a good story to tell, then sure, go ahead and do it. But Teen Wolf was a product of the ’80s in the same way that the Jonas Brothers are a product of Satan. You can’t catch the same lighting in a bottle. OK, it was more like a spark of static electricity, but without a budding star along the lines of Michael J Fox, who anchors this movie? Robert Pattinson? Zac Efron? Not a chance.

The original told of a scrawny kid who sucked at basketball and how his fortunes turned around when he realized he was the child of a werewolf. Cue forty minutes of Michael J Fox looking like the long-lost fourth member of ZZ Top, slam dunking the ball and scoring chicks with his wolfitude. It abrely played in 1985 and didn’t play at all in 1987 when Jason Bateman got to play Fox’s cousin in Teen Wolf Too. Let it die. Better yet, someone cast a couple of silver bullets now, before it is too late.

Editor’s Note: I’ve embedded the trailer for the original film below:

  • Good God! Does the industry have an ounce left of creativity?! I agree with the writer of this entry. Teen Wolf should stay in the 80s. I'm fucking sick of most remakes.
  • INS
yea, this is sad. how about some f'n original ides hollywood? just sorry.

TV has improved, yet movies are on the decline except for a few bright spots here and there.
  • INS
    correction 'ideas'
  • In defense of Hollywood there has ALWAYS been a section that have lacked creativity.
  • INS
not much of a defense lol
  • It wasn't meant to be lol just to say that it is no way a new phenomenon. I mean there is more remakes now but there is also more movies now so it's to be expected.
  • Don't they know the reason we watch Teen Wolf or Teen Witch is to laugh our asses off at how ridiculous they are?
  • OMG! I HOPE THEY GET ZAC EFRON!!!!!!!!

Or, you know just don't bother.
  • Justin Craig
Are they trying to kill Michael J. Fox? This is absolutely terrible! As Parkinson's destroys the man's body, he has to watch the studios destroy his legacy! I couldn't be more pissed! This is worth starting a boycott over; not just for this movie but for every Warner Brothers movie.
  • Justin
Are you crazy in real life or just on the Internet?
  • Justin Craig
Both, but I'm cool when I'm on my meds. Unfortunately, my meds haven't been legal in the U.S. for over a century.
  • vva
To be fair, Teen Wolf itself was a loose remake of I Was a Teenage Werewolf from the 50's.. so it's not really blasphemy.
  • RPK
I can't wait till they reboot a reboot!
  • Justin
@vva: Finally, someone who gets it.
  • ok... why?
  • "But Teen Wolf was a product of the ’80s in the same way that the Jonas Brothers are a product of Satan."

    Hahahahahaahahahaha... nice.
  • omar_swarez
    more like gag me.
  • Well, at least we may have a remake that could easily be better than the original. Also, it's not in the hands of Disney, so I feel at least 35% safer.

That being said, no movie at all could be better than the original so... why not save your money and forget Teen Wolf ever happened!
  • Yes please let it die!!
  • Noooo!
  • 'Teen Wolf' is so awesome. This is the one 80s film remake I'd stand in line for opening day. The question is what sport will this version play. I'd hope for hockey.
  • youngblaze
WTF Hollywood just shown that they have no ideas at all

remake classic movies that we all grown up on will destroy what we like about original
  • Lux
    fucking Why?????????
  • youngblaze
teen wolf is good as it is no point for them to do a remake
  • jason B
"cast" silver bullets...fukin brilliant wordplay russ! i'm loosing patience too man, you wonder if any of these folks involved ever step back and get embarrassed at what they're doing. doubtful.
  • Solid
Why is everyone here so juvenile? Grow up please. The original represents all of our teen angst associated with the rapid growth process of puberty, something I'm still experiencing at the ripe old age of 23, and it sucks ass. I'd love to see them explore it in a more modern perspective, what with all the internet gadgets we have now and stuff.
  • fex
You know, If you gotta do a warewolf remake, "Silver Bullet" might not be a bad place to start. Even "The Howling" wouldn't be a bad choice.
  • Wes
"But Teen Wolf was a product of the ’80s in the same way that the Jonas Brothers are a product of Satan."

    Too easy.
  • The_Kid
Didn't they already remake this when they did Teen Wolf Too, this is why I'm becoming a filmmaker, so this s**t won't happen. Next they are gonna want to remake BTTF, things like this make me sad.
  • I don't understand the negativity behind news that something is getting remade or rebooted. While I agree that some movies should not be remade, or don't need to be, remakes are as old as film itself.

Remember Dracula with Bela Lugosi? Well, the famous "Horror of Dracula," a widely accepted horror picture was a remake of the Lugosi version. Hammer films remade a ton of the Universal Monster pictures of the 30s and 40s. And those films have been remade again after that. No one questions that unless they were bad remakes.

But for some reason, modern day film fans seem to reject any idea for new remakes or reboots. Granted, perhaps it is because there are so many being remade, but is that really a bad thing if the remake is good? I'm highly looking forward to The Wolf Man remake, for example. Hopefully it'll be great.

Original films are great, but I like films being updated just so long as they're updated well.
  • Joshua Ruth
    Well stated.

Pretty upsetting to say the least. They're tarnishing any and every classic film's reputation and it's just immoral. I don't understand how these people can have the mindset: "We made an awesome film, let's ruin it!" Makes absolutely no sense.
  • Bull
They should make a more realistic update where instead of the main character being good at basketball when he transforms into a wolf, he just completely sucks and resorts to biting/clawing the other team. I'd see that.
  • Slashfilm and other blogs complain and complain about Hollywood rehashing movies from their past... But then when the movie is closer to production they hawk over all the news of latest casting, plot specifics, and so on like vultures in the desert..

It's kind of hypocritical thats all.
  • spacedog128
i will say i hate the reboot culture we live in - and i definitely hate seeing movies created seemingly with recognized brands as the primary interest...

however - how many productions of hamlet or macbeth have there been... when a new production of shakespeare is put on, we accept that it will be different from another that was already put on...

to counter this, one could point out that the same script is not being used -- however, i love the idea of 'putting on another production' of a story...

still... these constant reboots feel more like marketable products than a new envisioning
  • dallas man
"cast a couple of silver bullets", man that's poetry.

Alright, I usually don't like to rant, but I see this as a special occasion. I mean I'm getting really pissed with Hollywood and all these effing remakes of evey movie that has come out in the 80's. Then to make it worse they shelve the movies that are actually original and have somewhat potential until they feel like wanting to release it to DVD. This BS has to really stop because it's just really ridicoulous now. I am especially pissed at Warner Bros. because they would rather wait years to make a fucking TEEN WOLF movie then release 2 great properties they already have like TrickRTreat and The Hills Run Red into the Theatres. May I also add that these two movies have been getting great buzz from special screenings and have been called some of the best horror films in yeears. I mean seriously they would just ignore all the positive feedback from theses to remake a movie people barely fucking remember and didn't even really like. Seriously Warner Bros. WTF is going on ? :(
  • Teen Wolf? Seriously? It was silly in the 80's, what makes them think it wouldn't be outdated goofiness now?
  • Lauren
    Not exactly surprising frankly.

And come on, "in the same way that the Jonas Brothers are a product of Satan"? That's a little unnecessary.
  • FelixA9
Teen Wolf is only one of two movies I've ever walked out of (Iron Eagle being the other). I shudder to think of how horrible this turd promises to be.
  • I have my combo DVD with both the original and the lesser sequel signed by writers Jeph Loeb and Tim Kringe. I'm still holding out for a high school boy with Wolf powers on Heroes.
  • Bree_zy
I find it hard to believe (and most likely enjoy) any movie remakes from the 80's franchise. (But I do wonder if they will include the end scene where an extra showed his junk haha)
  • Sujurella
What 80's remake are they doing now?! The Breakfast Club?
Does this damn movie industry not have any creativity anymore? I mean I bet if I had that money I could make a movie that wasn't clearly a remake of this movie!
I guarantee this 80's remake is going to fail just like the remake of Fame, which was one of my reccomended movies!
  • This bums me out more that AW in London because at least you know that will try to be dark. This is more like the Karate Kid news. It is going to be some sucky teen movie. Zac Efron or Nick Jonas here we come.
  • harrypotty
ill cry if they remake this movie
only mjf can pull it off
this is my all time fave!!
  • None
Alright, guys. Alright. Listen up. Here's what we'll do. We'll remake "Teen Wolf." No, wait, but it's not some "Teen Wolf 2009," "I Was A Teen Wolf," or "The Teen Wolf" kind of movie. It's "Wolf Teen." Do you get it yet? It's about a group of wolves, and one of them turns into a teenager. Now how about that? The angle is original, and we can probably get some Diablo Cody style wannabe to write the thing. Top it off with an "indie" movie star and voila. You'll be eating out of the palms of our hands.
  • Tina
I love the ideal, but make it just a teen version of Twilight. Dont put all that fur on the boy, and dont let it be cheesy. tweens will go crazy if the teen wolf/vampire guy is a cutie
  • This is very sad news. Some things just shouldnt be tampered with.
  • SayNoToMuffins
Noooooooooo! If they make a new Teen Wolf I'll die! Don't ruin Michael J. Fox's awesomeness with this crap!
