Cold Souls Movie Trailer

Cold Souls

In the surreal comedy, Cold Souls, Paul Giamatti plays an actor named… Paul Giamatti. Stumbling upon an article in The New Yorker about a high-tech company that extracts, deep-freezes and stores people’s souls, Paul very well might have found the key to happiness for which he’s been searching. But, complications arise when he is the unfortunate victim of “soul-trafficking.” Giamatti’s journey takes him all the way to Russia in hopes of retrieving his stolen soul from an ambitious but talentless soap-opera actress.

Cold Souls premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and it’s easy to see why it has drawn many comparisons to the stories of Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine…etc). And the film was equally as polarizing as Kaufman’s Synecdoche, New York, which probably means I’ll like it. Watch the trailer embedded after the jump, leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Watch the trailer in High Definition on Apple.com. Cold Souls hits theaters begining on August 7th 2009.

Looks pretty good.. I'm going to make and effort to see it. Though it seems like the kind of movie to only be playing at one theater around here.

This is soooo Charlie Kauffmanesque, even more so than Stranger Than Fiction was. My God, Kauffman has become a sub-genre! Looks very interesting. Count me in!

i read recently (within last year) a quote of woody allen that he felt no directors today copy his style. he didn't say it to be down on himself or to be full of himself... simply noticed that there aren't directors making movies in his style...

i love that kauffman, with such a unique and thought provoking style, has one that is being attempted by others...

This is so Kauffman. I can't wait to see it.

Wow, this is really, really, really weird... I just finished watching The Simpsons episode "Bart Sells His Soul" and this is the first thing I see right after.
  • i thought the same thing about the being john malkovich connection. which isn't bad at all. and hoooooly shit. this movie has lauren ambrose. i'll see it if only for that.
  • thebertosaurus
    Great cast, great story.
  • It reminds me a lot of Eternal Sunshine of A Spotless Mind. I don't think it is going to be as good as any of the Kaufman movies, probably as good as Stranger Than Fiction. Cold Souls look like a fun movie.

Sheesh. Who can sit through another Paul Giamitti film? The whole "neurotic" thing is wearing thin.
  • I watched it at the Seattle International Film Festival. I thought it was great but most of the people in my party didn't.
  • Lux
    I'm watching this.

    Pig Vomit!

This is an absolute MUST SEE for me .... looks like Giamatti is on top form again.
  • Ben
This doesn't look to be "Flat-Out Funny" to me...

I saw Cold Souls at Bonnaroo this year and I have to say I was very surprised! A very surreal sort of dark comedy. Definitely enjoyable and Giamatti is great in it.

This looks great! Hopefully I'll be able to catch it. Like for Some reason Brothers Bloom was playing erratically in different parts of SoCal.

WWCKD, they asked themselves. And then, voila! You get this Eternal Sunshine wannabe. It's as if they ran it through a Kauffman simulator and it pooped out this movie.

He should sue the shit out of everyone involved in this unoriginal piece of junk. I am ashamed of Paul Giametti. Perhaps he couldn't tell what they were up to. But the writer and director of this should be shot in the face. Enjoy your cheap, cynical knock-off folks. I'd rather go see Transmorphers. At least those people don't try to pretend their shit is original. Bah!
  • Fir3Wolf
Doesn't look to bad so perhaps I'll check it out. As for people comparing it to Eternal Sunshine, I haven't seen that movie so that doesn't matter to me.
  • Reniassance_Man
Good for Kaufman that his films have been so original that similar stories can be deemed "Kaufmanesque." As for this film, I'm not entirely sold on it. I will definitely watch it, though I'm not necessarily anticipating it.

kaufman rip off ALL THE WAY

This was probably one of my favorite films at Sundance. Laugh-out-loud funny in parts, completely moving in others.
