2012 Movie Trailer

2012

Sony Pictures has released the first full trailer for 2012, the next big disaster film from Roland Emmerich, the director of Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow and Godzilla.

Never before has a date in history been so significant to so many cultures, so many religions, scientists, and governments. 2012 is an epic adventure about a global cataclysm that brings an end to the world and tells of the heroic struggle of the survivors. Starring John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Danny Glover, Thandie Newton and Oliver Platt.

To be honest, I had kinda gotten tired of the disaster movie genre as a whole, and wasn’t really looking forward to 2012 at all. But judging from this trailer, 2012 looks like it could be the first fun disaster film we’ve seen in a long while. Some of the effects-infused scenes just look incredible. I don’t think I’ve been this excited about seeing a disaster film since first witnessing the alien ship blow up the White House in the Independence Day teaser during the Superbowl. Watch the trailer after the jump (we’ve also included the international trailer which features a few different shots) and leave your thoughts in the comments below. What do you think?

International trailer:

Watch the trailer in High Definition on Yahoo. 2012 hits theaters on November 13th 2009.

Looks like another typical Emmerich film. Snooze.

Unearthly force out to wipe out mankind? Check.
White House destroyed in an incredibly over the top way? Check.
Aircraft flying away just as impending doom approaches? Check.
Government having a secure location but choosing not to tell anyone about it? Check.

I didn't see a shot of a Mac stopping the event, but I'm sure it's there somewhere.

I hate being a sucker for special effects. Movie could be pretty lame... but they do look nifty!
  • Phontsolo
Well made trailer. Special effects look ridiculous! But that's probably all it's gonna be. All special effects.
  • omri
    looks good
  • Timmy
    Nothing really beats the teaser
  • i haven't got goose bumps like this since the terminator trailer.
terminator sucked. i hope this doesn't
  • mbellerbrock
Ha, prepare to be disappointed again.
  • danny

  • mbellerbrock

  • Haz

  • Luke
Looks like every other Emmerich film.

Just call it Independence Day 2: The One Without Will Smith and be done with it.
  • Danny Glover as President FTW!
  • It certainly LOOKS good, but I doubt that movie will impress me...
  • Jay
is it me or are they filming everything digital?
  • Dylan
    Looks pretty, pretty, pretty good.
  • Its first movie of his since maybe ID4 that look current. The effects look great for once.
  • Looks intense, was that Danny Glover as the president?
  • Ok, this does look like stupid fun. I mean, giant waves, meteors, earthquakes, all leading up to us building an underground society a la Dr. Strangelove? I'm in, even if I just wait for DVD.

So, does the world just spontaneously combust, or do you think there's more of an explanation than just this magical date?

Well, according to some scientists, the alignment of the sun and the earth on that day is supposed to line up with a black hole in the center of our galaxy, which has the potential to mess with the magnetic poles on our planet, causing them to shift. This would cause a bunch of crazy natural disasters. Who knows. The movie looks good though, at least the CGI anyway!
  • Pete
Um, one day? try several years. What is happening is that the solar system (not the Earth and the Sun) is passing through the gravitaional plane of the galaxy (you know, through the center of one of its spiral arms where there is more mass a.k.a asteroids and other crazy "natural disaster" causing crap). To add to the immense electromagnetic interference caused by this denser region of the galaxy, the sunspot cycle is reaching its peak in 2012 (last time that happened we had some huge power-outages here on Earth). Also, we are well overdue for another explosion from yellowstone. Ever wonder why life on earth gets wiped out every 33 million years?
Although this is just speculation, it is rather intriguing. 2012 will be another Y2K however the period of time spanning many years after 2012 will be humanity's true judgment day (if we can withstand the riots of the crazy superstitious individuals who honestly believe that one day can kill us all) :).
  • y2kguest
Actually, sometime in the 80's our solar system started to enter into an alignment with the center of the milkyway galaxy, around 2012 we are actaully EXITING that alignmnment. Since the Galaxy is a super big place, our little earth could be "aligned" for decades and in transistion for years. It is not a one day occurance where one day we wake up and gravity has gone crazy and the earth is listing. Even drastic shifts in the earth crust have taken 10's of 1000's of years (the use of a word Drastic is relative to your time measurement. When measuring a billion years, drastic could be as long as a 100,000 years). Lastly, the hot spot that created yellowstone has erupted every 600,000 to 1 million years, some years being more volatile than others, so chances of this thing going off and killing the earth can't be substantiated as none of those past eruptions killed the earth, and in all actuality, the impact catastophically speaking was measured in a 1000 miles or so in a hemisphere. As for shutting the sun out and triggering a new ice age, I think it would take something large (and this is my opinion) like a meteor to do that.
In other words, relax. enjoy the movie for what it is, entertainment. and let logic prevail not hype.

I'm a geologist. Life on earth doesn't get wiped out every 33 million years. There have been mass extinctions, most notably the Permian and Cretaceous. Some form of life has always made it through each of these events.
Also, the magnetic poles have switched many times in Earth's history. Humans haven't been around to see any of these, but I truly don't think it's anything to worry about (other than some technological malfunctions...just to be safe, don't fly during mid-December ;) ). The process of SWITCHING the poles takes time...it's not going to happen in one day.
As for Yellowstone, no one can say exactly what will happen there. The Discovery Channel created a lot of hype when it decided to coin it a "supervolcano"...but I highly doubt it's going to randomly decide to blow up on that date in 2012.
Enjoy the awesome CGI and John Cusack. But don't spend the next three years losing your mind about the possibilities. Maybe that day will be pivotal because we make it pivotal?

Movie might be mediocre but I'm not gonna lie, that trailer was pretty epic. Probably was the music, I love when film trailers incorporate orchestral music. 10000 BC was horrible, hopefully this will be better, CG is amazing too.
  • ricky
looks pretty lame, story sucks just all cgi action.
  • boogieWOOGIE
i have a feeling it'll end just like KNOWING...
  • bellarn
    but what a ride!!!
  • Well of course it looks cook at this point Roland Emmerich should be an expert at finding cool ways to destroy the planet but considering he also wrote it I'm thinking there's about zero chance it could be good.

But then again why am I(and others) so willing to give Michael Bay a pass for cool looking movies with no substance while we jump all over Roland Emmerich for giving us the same thing? I guess I'm just a hypocrite.
  • comic bat
Awesome !!! But I'm still waiting for the AVATAR trailer. when will we see the trailer ?!!!!
  • alexander Semidey
I would love to see a Y2k movie.
  • TEXAS jeep
YEAH BUT WE ALL KNOW THE ENDING TO THAT ONE.
  • Effects look incredible. Looks like epic mindless fun.
  • Booooh!

    Roland Emmerichs Disaster-fetish is boring!

Every religious view of the world is wrong, the world will not come to an end.

But, yes, the CGI looked enjoyable ;-)
  • Adam
Looks like it'll be a "fun" movie at most.
  • Marc Levy
    Ok.... I'm scared now......
  • Adam
    Oh and welcome to erf.
  • It is a 'The Day After Tomorrow' Clone. Simple as that. looks pretty, but still kinda dumb.
  • dagreenman18
Well, at least we know Emmerich can still destroy stuff good. Shame this movie is going to suck.
  • Ben Anderson
REALLY? This is what we're making movies about? Roland Emmerich, the maker of three of the stupidest movies EVER has topped himself this time.
  • Patrick S.
The special effects look amazing. However, I fear that that will be the only good thing from this movie. Also, I had a feeling that a modern-day would come into effect in the film, since the poster read, "Who will be left behind?"
  • Wow! That looks outstanding! I hadn't even heard much at all about it until now, but now am looking forward to it.
  • JoShmo
Showed WAY too much in the trailer. i love Independence Day but hate Day after tomorrow so idk about this.
  • Dan P.
As shitty as the story looks, that CGI is freakin amazing!! And I'm one of those people that are picky about CGI!

p.s.-For some reason the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel cracking exactly between the touching fingers was hilarious to me.
  • Not sure what to think about this. It looks incredibly dumb and lifeless. One could only hope that Roland has a good story in here. If not, I'm sure mouthbreathers will eat it up.
  • TEXAS jeep
not sure what a mouth breather is, is that like a suckubus?
  • Charles-A
Am I the only one who thinks that destroying the world could be fun like Emmerich did ? It could be a pretty fun film ? Nope ? :D
