Whiteout Comic-Con Promo Trailer

beckinsale_whiteout

Update: For those who missed it, the Comic Con promo trailer is back online!

At long last there’s a trailer for Whiteout, the adaptation of Greg Rucka’s Eisner Award winning comic book series. Starring Kate Beckinsale as US Marshall Carrie Stetko and featuring The Spirit’s Gabriel Macht, this is a murder mystery set in Antarctica. A mystery revolving around, as the trailer points out, the very first murder in Antarctica. This Dark Castle production was directed by Dominic Sena, previously of Swordfish and Gone in 60 Seconds disrepute… though having said all of that, I quite enjoyed this trailer. See it for yourself after the break.

Here’s the promo, interesting voice over and all:

Beckinsale seems to have been somewhat underused here I think. Don’t the trailer manufacturers think she has even a little bit of a lure to her? I thought she was at least 25% of the reason anybody watched the Underworld films (while scratching my head about the other 75%).

Back when Sena was the director of commericals and music videos (rather than car crash films that looked like commercials or music videos) he was part of the Propaganda Films roster alongside Michael Bay, Antoine Fuqua, Spike Jonze, David Fincher, Simon West, Alex Proyas, Mark Romanek and many more. That’s one heck of a club.

The story takes place at and around the McMurdo station, as referenced in The Thing, Alien and Dark Star and heavily featured in Werner Herzog’s Encounters at the End of the World. Shall we just say that I’m not entirely convinced that Whiteout is going to maintain that beautiful cinematic pedigree?

The Whiteout comics series had a sequel, Whiteout: Melt that saw not only murder but mass murder come to Antarctica. At least there’s something in place if this first film is a smash - not to mention the long-promised third comics run, Whiteout: Thaw which is now rumoured to be set for a debut this autumn, sometime after the movie hits in September.

    First......I likeeeeeeeeee
  • Ben
looks like The Thing. But with Kate Beckinsale instead of Kurt Russell's beard!
  • Didn't they announce this back at Comic Con 2007? Or was it 2008?
  • I think it was 2007, during the same panel Zach Snyder showed the first Watchmen poster, and when they showed the Trick R' Treat trailer.

Looks like a cool movie. Glad it's finally coming out.
  • Yeah. I think this is the exact same trailer that was back at Con07. I agree with you though. This and Trick R' Treat need to come out soon.

Also, I love my Watchmen Poster
  • Ragey McRagenstein
    180 Days of Night
  • They should have got Kiefer Sutherland to do the voice-over. Would have made it much more bad-ass
  • [A]
Pretty brutal sight of the dead body..
  • Ghad
Is this supposed to be Supernatural?
  • That looked fucking epic. I want now!
  • Didn't really entice me.

MURDER! In Antarctica! Scary snow!!! ... Hot Fuzz II aka Frozen Furr

Anyone actually read this and know if it's actually worth a dime?
  • The graphic novel is pretty badass. A nice tight mystery story in an unfamiliar setting. I don't think I've read anything Rucka's written that's been unenjoyable, and Whiteout stands very well with the rest of his work.

With hope this will take off so that the Queen & Country movie will get bumped out of development hell.
  • Yeah. The graphic novel is really good! Not sure how well it will translate though. Pick it up fo sho.
  • That awesome voice over sold me.
  • ian
I know its like those awesome creepy 60/70s trailer voice overs
  • THAT'S what I was searching for in my head! Exactly right. Loved the voiceover. Fit the trailer perfectly I think.
  • Was that voice over Brainiac on Superman the ANimated Series?
    Seriously...
  • Boo!

Looks, feels, and sounds like every thing else right now.

Just let comics be comics there's a reason most creators choose this medium and aren't whoring themselves (Mark Millar aside) with every project.
  • The voiceover is kinda trippy, but I can get behind it. I think the look of the movie is cool and hope it delivers on the graphic novel's promise.
  • Beckinsale has been improving a lot lately (Snow Angels, Nothing But the Truth) so let's hope she continues her streak.
  • kingdarius
It looks like there is going to be a lot of things going on in this one but i might check it out. Oh and STOP HATIN ON UNDERWORLD!!!!
  • Anthroman
Odd, I was hoping for a movie about the classic office product...

Not reallly impressed, but I'd be willing to give it a chance
  • Voice over guy did the White Noise trailer a few years back- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haHHr5_VX7I Just has a different mix.
  • Retcon
I read the comicbook. It's a really good crime thriller. Unfortunately, Hollywood felt the need to replace the other female lead with a male lead... probably thinking a potential blockbuster can't work with two female lead characters?!? I don't get it. Part of the strength of this book was that it featured two strong women... that's totally lost now.
  • What's the story here, Warner Bros call and you immediately remove the trailer? I know there's a level of protection you need to maintain to keep relations functioning with studios but how about some editorial independence... or am I just bitter I missed seeing the trailer?
  • adE
    here ya go dude

    http://www.dailymotion.com/bookmarks/aelmo/video/...

try and check it out before it disappears again

    i say looks good
  • Boo Warners for pulling the trailer, made me had to watch it on YouTube.
  • |Khuzud
What's the point of pulling a trailer? Aren't they supposed to provide hype for a movie? I'd think WB would want that
  • Maggie
Yeah... it would suck if people got interested in this move that I KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT. Good work, WB. You're real professionals.
  • "The trailer has been removed by request of Warner Bros"

    >:(
  • "The trailer has been removed by request of Warner Bros"

    :@
  • joe
can someone give me a rundown of the trailer
  • Anonymous
It feels a bit link-baity that you have to click after the jump to find out the trailer's been pulled.
  • I like the vintage feel of the trailer, reminds me of the trailer for Outland or The Thing. I think it has potential to be decent.

Beckinsale is 75% of the reason why people saw Underworld, the other 25% is because its about vampires and werewolves. Was for me anyway.
  • freemachine
Kate Beckinsale? Oh Hells yeah, I'm there!
  • Grumblerumble
I read the comic and enjoyed it quite a bit. It'll be interesting to see if the movie adaptation turns out. The artist of the comics, Steve Lieber, has the first issue on his site for anyone interested in seeing the original material at

  • Brandon
The Thing starring Kate Beckinsale? Hell yeah!
  • Aaron
I really dug the announcer's voice in the first part. It had shades of some of those 70's horror movie trailers (Last House on the Left, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, more recently: Machete).
  • josh
It's a really good comic book. It's actually kind of similar to Insomnia. Kate Beckinsale is on a roll right now with Snow Angels and Nothing But the Truth. She is an excellent actress.
  • Wait... Those temperature stats were for Antarctica? Thats how cold it feels all winter here in Manitoba (Where some of the film was shot), heh.
  • Its back up and it looks good. Everyone is saying that it reminds them of The Thing, but the fact it takes place in Antarctica is the only thing I see reason to compare it lol. Does look good, and I'll check it out even though I'm not exactly a big fan of the director.
  • bb6640
I remember reading the comics way back and I distinctly remember there were two female protagonists and no male love interest...
  • Sena's got real talent as a visual stylist -- he's just not a real "artist" as a director. Which means, to me at least, he'll be about as bad (or as good) as the material he's given. Swordfish was out-and-out idiotic, but it looked damn good (Halle Berry in particular, of course). So this might be OK. At least in the "ooooh, pretty" way.
  • Jihad Adams
Yeah, so, this isn't going to top John Carpenter's 'The Thing'. Fuck it.
  • The KId
looks okay but the voice over was lame as hell, I've been interested in this so I heard about but this trailer hasn't really done anything for me.
  • lenny
That really really feels just like the Graphic to me.
I loved the book and if the movie follows as closely as this trailer appears (which is easy because it's just a simple murder mystery) then this sould turn out great!
  • OMPS
Voice over was unique and interesting -- rare these days when it's the same drooly FAST AND FURIOUS guy doing everything.

Unfortunately WHITEOUT is a mess and has been worked over for over a year in the editing room. Watch IMDb in November for all the "goofs"!

Just pointing this, I think that the article has the film's location wrong. Between the views of the station and that fact that it says it takes place at 90 degrees S I'm gonna go ahead and say that it probably takes place the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. McMurdo is still an unpleasant place in the winter (believe me . . .) but it's nowhere near as cold and isolated as Pole.
Maybe the comic is based at McMurdo (haven't read it) but it seems like they moved it further south for the movie.
